  • The conventional method of structural seismic design was based on increasing structural capacity, which usually didn't reduce earthquake seismic effects. By changing the philosophy of structure design, technologies such as passive seismic control have been used in structures. So far, a large number of seismic isolation systems have been introduced to dissipate earthquake energy that is applied to a structure. These systems act against earthquakes rather than increasing the strength and capacity of the structure. In the present paper, a suspended column called a "pendulum column" is investigated, and a new idea has been considered to improve the performance of the pendulum column isolator by changing the gravity effect by adding a spring under the isolator system. The behavior of the studied isolator system has been researched. Then the isolator system was investigated under different earthquakes and compared with a common pendulum column isolator. The results show that changing the gravity effect has an effective role in the response of the system by reducing the system stiffness. Equations for the system showed that even in a special state, complete isolation is possible. Finally, the tested model verified the theory.

  • Fault diagnosis problem is currently the subject of extensive research and numerous survey paper can be found. Although several works are studied on the fault detection and isolation observers and the residual generators, those are concerned with only the detection of actuator failures or sensor failures. So, the perfect detection and isolation is strongly required for practical applications. In this paper, a, strategy of fault diagnosis using multiple proportional integral (PI) observers including the magnitude of actuator failures is provided. It is shown that actuator failures are detected and isolated perfectly by monitoring the integrated error between actual output and estimated output by a PI observer. Also in presence of complex actuator and sensor failures, these failures are detected and isolated by multiple PI observers.

  • The optimal residual generator based on parity relation approach for the fault detection and isolation of a arge diesel engine actuator position servo system is presented. The closed-loop residual generator is designed to have robustness against modeling errors and noise. Main purpose of the fault detection and isolation system in the process is to detect and isolate two important faults, i.e., actuatro fault and fault of speed sensor, that, if not detected and compensated, degrade the overall control system performance. Simulation results are give to show the practical applicability of the fault detecrtion and isloation scherme.

  • When a magnetostrictive material is exposed to a magnetic field, its geometry changes due to a magnetostrictive effect. The magnetostriction is analogous to the piezoeletricity. The displacement of the magnetostrictive material is proportional to the applied current while that of the piezoelectric material is proportional to the voltage. A magnetostrictive material generates large displacement and higher compressive force compared with a piezoeletric material. These advantages provide a good performance of a vibration isolation of a platform. In this work, it is applied to a driving actuator for vibration isolation of a platform. The properties of a magnetostrictive material are investigated in terms of hysteresis and displacement vs. applied current for a various preload. Modeling of the displacement of the vibration isolating actuator is performed as it behaves as a flow source. A sliding mode controller is designed to demonstrate the ability of the magnetostrictive actuator to reduce the vibration at the platform. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through experimental works. The experimental results of the vibration of the platform axe presented in terms of time response and frequency response.

  • Neuro-Fuzzy modeling approach is proposed to predict the dynamic behavior of a single-degree-of-freedom structure that is equipped with hybrid base isolation system. Hybrid base isolation system consists of friction pendulum systems (FPS) and a magnetorheological (MR) damper. Fuzzy model of the M damper is trained by ANFIS using various displacement, velocity, and voltage combinations that are obtained from a series of performance tests. Modelling of the FPS is carried out with a nonlinear analytical equation that is derived in this study and neuro-fuzzy training. Fuzzy logic controller is employed to control the command voltage that is sent to MR damper. The dynamic responses or experimental structure subjected to various earthquake excitations are compared with numerically simulated results using neuro-fuzzy modeling method. Numerical simulation using neuro-fuzzy models of the MR damper and FPS predict response of the hybrid base isolation system very well.

  • Base isolation is an innovative design strategy that provides a practical alternative for the seismic design of structures. Base isolators, mainly employed to isolate large structures subjected to earthquake ground excitations and to rehabilitate structures damaged by past earthquakes, deflect and absorb the seismic energy horizontally transmitted to the structures. This study demonstrated that the base isolation system may offer effective performance for bridges during severe seismic events through shaking table tests. Two base isolation systems using laminated rubber bearings with and without hydraulic dampers are tested. The test results strongly show that the laminate rubber bearings cause the natural period of the bridge structure increased considerably, which results in the deck acceleration and the shear forces on the deck acceleratino and the shear forces on the piers reduced significantly. The results also demonstrate that the hydraulic dampers enhance the system's capacity in dissipating energy to reduce the relative displacement between the bridge deck and the pier.

  • Fault Detection and Isolation(FDI) schemes using unknown input functional observers with very low order are presented. These schemes resolve the major practical difficulties with all FDI systems employing multiple observers for residual generation and can be implemented by the use of microprocessors that are normally used in commercial processes mainly due to the simplicity of the residual generation block. Various design objectives including detection, isolation, estimation and compensation of instrument fault/or process fault are achievable with these schemes. The proposed FDI scheme is applied to an inverted pendulum control system for instrument fault detection.

  • Base isolation systems are economic and efficient for the control of structural vibration. In this study, the base isolators of LRB(laminated rubber bearing) type which have been generally used are fabricated and tested. From the static and dynamic tests, the characteristics of the base isolators, considering strain-hardening, hysteretic damping and horizontal stiffnesses, etc., are verified and particularly the feasibility as base isolation devices is discussed. Consequently, the test results are compared with the analytical ones that are derived from idealization as a bilinear model.

  • The robustness issues in fault detection and isolation(FDI) have received considerable attenuation in recent years, due to the increasing demand for safe and reliable operation of uncertain and complex dynamic systems. The aim of this paper is to present the FDI method by using proportional integral(PI) observer and unknown input observer(UIO) under the faults of actuators and sensors. Due to this simple residual generator, the PI observer can easily detect the both faults of actuator and sensor. A simulation results show the effectiveness of this methods.

  • In this study, we made two types of main control room floor systems (Type I, Type II) and several shaking table tests with and without isolation system were conducted to evaluate floor isolation effectiveness of LRB(Lead Rubber Bearing). Both type showed large difference according to input earthquake signals, but showed little difference according to floor type. It is required to make LRB of which design frequency is below 1Hz when applied to main control room of NPP, but considering much difficulties in making such LRB, it is recommended that consideration should be taken into account when applied to main control room of NPP.
