  • The problem of finding an allowable object trajectory for a cooperating two-robot system is investigated. The method proposed in this paper is based on reformulating the problem as a nonlinear optimization problem with equality constants in terms of the joint variables. The optimization problem is then solved numerically on a computer. The solution automatically gives the corresponding joint variable trajectories as well, thus eliminating the need for solving the inverse kinematic problem. The method has been succesfully applied to an experimental system.

  • Joint force/torque estimation by inverse dynamics is a traditional tool in biomechanical studies. Conventionally for this, kinematic data of human body is obtained by motion capture cameras, of which the bulkiness and occlusion problem make it hard to capture a broad range of movement. As an alternative, inertial motion sensing using cheap and small inertial sensors has been studied recently. In this research, the performance of inertial motion sensing especially to calculate inverse dynamics is studied. Kinematic data from inertial motion sensors is used to calculate ground reaction force (GRF), which is compared to the force plate readings (ground truth) and additionally to the estimation result from optical method. The GRF estimation result showed high correlation and low normalized RMSE(R=0.93, normalized RMSE<0.02 of body weight), which performed even better than conventional optical method. This result guarantees enough accuracy of inertial motion sensing to be used in inverse dynamics analysis.

  • Industrial robots have increased in both the number and applications in today's material handling systems. However, traditional approaches to robot controling have had limited success in complicated environment, especially for real time applications. One of the main reasons for this is that most traditional methods use a set of kinematic equations to figure out the physical environment of the robot. In this paper, a neural network model to solve robot manipulator's inverse kinematics problem is suggested. It is composed of two Self-Organizing Feature Maps by which the workspace of robot environment and the joint space of robot manipulator is inter-linked to enable the learning of the inverse kinematic relationship between workspace and joint space. The proposed model has been simulated with two robot manipulators, one, consisting of 2 links in 2-dimensional workspace and the other, consisting of 3 links in 2-dimensional workspace, and the performance has been tested by accuracy of the manipulator's positioning and the response time.

  • An inverse kinemetics problem of a reclaimer which digs and transports ironstones or coals in the raw yard is investigated. Because of the special features of the reclaimer of which scooping buckets are attached around the rotating drum at the end of boom, kinematic redundancy occurs in determining the joint varialbes For a given reclaiming point in space the forward kinematics yields 3 equations, however the number of involved variables in the equations are four. A plane equation approximating the surface near a reclaiming point is obtained by considering 8 adjacent points surrounding the reclaiming point. One extra equation to overcome redunduncyis further obtained from the condition that the normal vector at a reclaiming point is perpendicular to the plane. An approximate solution for a simplified problem is first discussed, Numerical solution for the oritinal nonlinear porblem with a constraint equation is also investigated. Finally a closed form solution which is not exact but sufficiently close enough is proposed by exploiting geometric constraint.

  • This paper considers a global resolution of kinematic redundancy under inequality constraints as a constrained optimal control. In this formulation, joint limits and obstacles are regarded as state variable inequality constraints, and joint velocity limits as control variable inequality constraints. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived by using Pontryagin's minimum principle and penalty function method. These conditions leads to a two-point boundary-value problem (TPBVP) with natural, periodic and inequality boundary conditions. In order to solve the TPBVP and to find a global minimum, a numerical algorithm, named two-stage algorithm, is presented. Given initial joint pose, the first stage finds the optimal joint trajectory and its corresponding minimum performance cost. The second stage searches for the optimal initial joint pose with globally minimum cost in the self-motion manifold. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through a simulation with a 3-dof planar redundant manipulator.

  • The accuracy problem of robot manipulators has long been one of the principal concerns in robot design and control. A practical and economical way of enhancing the manipulator accuracy, without affecting its hardware, is kinematic calibration. In this paper an effective and practical method is presented for kinematic calibration of Stewart platforms. In our method differential errors in kinematical parameters are linearly related to differential errors in the platform pose, expressed through the forward kinematics. The algorithm is tested using simulated measurement in which measurement noise is included.

  • The manipulability analysis of the parallel-type rolling mill proposed in Hong et al. [1] is re-visited. The parallel rolling mill uses two Stewart platforms in opposite direction for the generation of 6 degree-of-freedom motions of each roll. The objective of this new parallel rolling mill is to permit an integrated control of the strip thickness, strip shape, pair crossing angle, uniform wear of rolls, and tension of the strip. New forward/inverse kinematics problems, in contrast with [1], are formulated. The forward kinematics problem is defined as the problem of finding the roll-gap and the pair-crossing angle of two work rolls for given lengths of twelve legs. On the other hand, the inverse kinematics problem is defined as the problem of finding the lengths of twelve legs when the roll-gap, the pair-crossing angle, and the position and orientation of one work roll are given. The method of manipulability analysis used in this paper follows the spirit of [1]. But, because the rolling force and moment exerted from both upper and lower rolls have been included in the manipulability analysis, more accurate results than the use of a single platform can be achieved. Two. kinematic parameters, the radius of the base and the angle between two neighboring joints, are optimally designed by maximizing the global manipulability measure in the entire workspace.

  • This paper proposes a method that can generate a smooth trajectory from the discontinuous trajectory in kinematic, dynamic, and task-space trajectory constraints. The problem is defined as the minimization of kinetic energy, and then the simulation is performed by using the MATLAB. Kinematic and inverse kinematic equations are derived for the simulation of the 6-DOF robotic arm. The simulation results showed that the trajectory of each joint is generated while satisfying the constraints without any discontinuity. There are small errors in the Cartesian trajectory, but unnecessary deceleration and acceleration can be eliminated. In addition, it is possible to quickly switch between the robotic tasks by applying the proposed method.

  • Using an inverse of the geometric Jacobian matrix is one of the most popular ways to control robot manipulators, because the Jacobian matrix contains the relationship between joint space velocities and operational space velocities. However, the control algorithm based on Jacobian matrix has algorithmic singularities: The robot manipulator becomes unstable when the Jacobian matrix loses rank. To solve this problem, various methods such as damped and filtered inverse have been proposed, but comparative studies to evaluate the performance of these algorithms are insufficient. Thus, this paper deals with a comparative analysis of six representative singularity avoidance algorithms: Damped Pseudo Inverse, Error Damped Pseudo Inverse, Scaled Jacobian Transpose, Selectively Damped Inverse, Filtered Inverse, and Task Transition Method. Especially, these algorithms are verified through computer simulations with a virtual model of a humanoid robot, THORMANG, in order to evaluate tracking error, computational time, and multiple task performance. With the experimental results, this paper contains a deep discussion about the effectiveness and limitations of each algorithm.
