  • In modern society, citizen's expectation about policing levels have been rising over time and it limited resources of the police to deal with the security services are insufficient. Until now, the state monopoly of the police activity was changing to subject of a variety in cooperation with public security system. The citizens considers community not the destination to police enforce the law but space for effective policing partners. Japanese police focus on cooperation oriented policing to strengthen the police and local residents with crime prevention for a long time. Also, the community through a variety of problem-solving policing activities to identify problems such as anxiety and anguish of the people. The legal basis for cooperative policing activity is that Nagaoka city crime prevention regulation in 1979. In recent years, Tokyo local government legislated the safe town development regulations(東京都安全 安心まちづくり條例) and set up the hot-spot area to promote the safety of public facilities. Cooperative policing not police intervention for crime prevention but national policy for the city reclamation in Japan. Police as well as the Ministry of Land and Transport, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education, Prime Minister and all government departments thread safe city, crime prevention, and has been working to make the safe city. Japan's cooperative policing is a system that receives the most attention and greater implications.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate circadian rhythms, learning flow, and fatigue of college students. The differences in learning flow and fatigue according to the type of circadian rhythms were also examined. The study used a descriptive survey research design. The convenience sample consisted of 224 college students from five universities. The data were collected from May to June in 2013 using the following instruments: Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire-Korean (MEQ-K), Flow State Scale, and Fatigue Assessment Inventory. The participants in the study were mostly put in neither-type (51.8%), and only 4.0% in morning-type. The morning-type students had higher learning flow scores and lower fatigue scores than the night-type students. The types of circadian rhythms measured by MEQ-K were compared to the subjective types of circadian rhythm which was based on the participants' self evaluation. There was a difference in the measured type and the subjective type in 32.1% of the participants. The findings of this study suggest that an intervention program to help college students accurately recognize their circadian rhythms might be effective in improving learning flow and decreasing fatigue.

  • Although social big data can provide a multi-faceted perspective on school bullying experiences among children and adolescents, the complexity and variety of unstructured text presents a challenge for systematic collection and analysis of the data. Development of an ontology, which identifies key terms and their intricate relationships, is crucial for extracting key concepts and effectively collecting data. The current study elaborated on the definition of an ontology, carefully described the 7 stage development process, and applied the ontology for collecting and analyzing school bullying social big data. As a result, approximately 2,400 key terms were extracted in top-, middle-, and lower-level categories, concerning domains of participants, causes, types, location, region, and intervention. The study contributes to the literature by explaining the ontology development process and proposing a novel alternative research model that uses social big data in school bullying research. Findings from this ontology study may provide a basis for social big data research. Practical implications of this study lie in not only helping to understand the experience of school bullying participants, but also in offering a macro perspective on school bullying as a social phenomenon.

  • This study is to discusses the relevance of social welfare in Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The results of the study are as follows. First, psychoanalytic theory details the client's family history and personal history to help them identify the characteristics of the problem they have today. At this time, social workers actively listen to clients and try to get various information.Second, when used in psychoanalytic techniques, the resistance of the client can be interpreted and analyzed to help the client maintain friendly relationships with the client.Third, psychoanalytic theory can properly apply the client's current state of mind by understanding the potential conflicts or emotions that exist in the client's unconscious mind. Fourth, during the process of intervention, social workers need to deal well with the client's transition response. This process allows social workers to observe the effect of reducing the stimuli that can cause nervousness in clients. In conclusion, all the techniques of interpretation used in psychoanalytic theory are, after all, techniques that help social workers improve clients' insight into their problems and help clients solve their psychological problems themselves. The psychoanalytic theory is widely applied in social welfare.

  • Internet privacy has become a significant issue in recent years in light of the sharp increase in internet-based social and economic activities. The technology which collects, processes and disseminates personal information is improving significantly and the demand for personal information is rising given its inherent value in regard to targeted marketing and customized services. The high value placed on personal information has turned it into a commodity with economic worth which can be transacted in the marketplace. Therefore, it is strongly required to approach the issue of privacy from economic perspective in addition to the prevailing approaches. This article analyzes the behaviors of consumers and firms in gathering personal information, and shielding it from unauthorized access, using a game theory framework in which players strive to do their best under the given conditions. The analysis shows that there exist no market forces which require all firms to respect consumer privacy, and that government intervention in the form of a nudging incentive for information sharing and/or strict regulation is necessary.

  • The effect of commercial deer antler drink (provided by Chung-yang Deer Farm) on blood glucose level, plasma lipids and antioxidants state in type 2 diabetic patients were studied. Ten patients with type 2 diabetes participated in the study and consumed 2 pouches (200 mL) of deer antler drink every day for 3 weeks. No significant differences were observed in levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). However, oxidized LDL measured as conjugated dienes decreased in the patients after the trial. Plasma tocopherols and carotenoids levels showed no significant changes. No significant differences were observed in erythrocyte SOD, catalase and GSH-Px in the each group. No significant differences were observed in plasma TRAP. The results would suggest that deer antler drink influences conjugated dienes but long-term intervention trial may be necessary to see further beneficial effect of deer antler drink in diabetic patients.

  • This study was motivated by the awareness that little attention has been paid to this issue both theoretically and empirically, despite the fact that financial abuse causes serious problems which are difficult for the elderly to recover from. This study intends to explore what the patterns of financial abuse targeting the elderly are, what causes and sustains these abuses, and what makes it difficult to counter such financial abuses. Data analysis was based on individual and group interviews of ten professionals expected to encounter the most financially abused elderly in social welfare institutions. The thematic analysis shows that financial abuse is often caused and maintained in a trusting relationship through care and protection. Because financial abuse was inflicted on the vulnerable elderly in a state of reinforced psychological dependence based on a long and trusting relationship, it appears that it has been made with tacit acknowledgement and consent. Despite those complex dynamics, it is noted that financial abuse can be judged as such only when the elderly claim to suffer from harm. Rather, intervention without victims' acknowledgement tends to be perceived as violating their right to self-determination. This reality naturally leads to the termination of the necessary interventions with the victims in an abusive situation. Based on these results, discussion focused on more realistic and diverse approaches to the issue of financial abuse of older adults.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effects that music therapy by self-selected music listening has on the affect and stress relief in adult patients who have been diagnosed with terminal cancer by pain level. Methods: Participants were 20 terminally ill cancer patients who were over 18 years old and were admitted to the hospice and palliative care unit of a local hospital. At the beginning of each session, participants selected music of their choice. Each participant had a total of six 30-minute music listening sessions. Participants were grouped into two according to their self-rated perceived pain scores on the visual analogue scale and numeric rated score: 5 and above and less than 5. Each participant completed a questionnaire on their affect state before and after each session and a questionnaire on their stress level before the first session and after the last session. Further analysis was performed to compare differences between the two groups according to pain level. Results: There were significant differences in patients' affect before and after each session (P<0.001) and stress level before and after the therapy (P=0.001). Conclusion: In this study, self-selected music listening had positive effects on terminal cancer patients' affect and stress regardless of perceived pain level. Therefore, self-selected music listening can be used as an appropriate intervention to improve affect and reduce stress in terminal cancer patients in the hospice and palliative care unit.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cocoa consumption is associated with health benefits due to its high content of polyphenols. However, the effects of short-term cocoa consumption remain unclear. We aimed to determine the effects generated by cocoa consumption (for 7 days) in young adults in normoweight and class II obesity. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Before-and-after study was carried out in normoweight (NW) (n = 15) and class II obesity (CIIO) (n = 15) young adults. The NW and CIIO participants consumed 25 and 39 g of cocoa, respectively, per day for 7 days. The effect of cocoa consumption was evaluated on the lipid profile, insulin resistance (IR), and inflammation. Oxidative damage was also examined by assessing the biomarkers of oxidative damage in plasma. In addition, recombinant human insulin was incubated with blood obtained from the participants, and the molecular damage to the hormone was analyzed. RESULTS: Cocoa consumption resulted in decreased low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol in both groups (P = 0.04), while the total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were maintained at the recommended levels. Initially, IR was detected in the CIIO group (homeostasis model assessment [HOMA] = 4.78 ± 0.4), which is associated with molecular damage to insulin. Interestingly, intervention with cocoa resulted in improved IR (HOMA = 3.14 ± 0.31) (P = 0.0018) as well as molecular damage to insulin. Finally, cocoa consumption significant decreased the arginase activity (P = 0.0249) in the CIIO group; this is a critical enzymatic activity in the inflammatory process associated with obesity. CONCLUSIONS: The short-term consumption of cocoa improves the lipid profile, exerts anti-inflammatory effects, and protects against oxidative damage. Results of this study indicate that cocoa consumption can potentially improve IR and restore a healthy redox status.

  • The social welfare system in modern world is generally recognized as the most effective measure against the social problems in capitalist societies. When a social welfare program is introduced to solve a social problem, however, it used to cause another new problem at the same time. In order to overcome this circularity, we need to consider not only quantitative but also the qualitative aspect of social welfare. In line with this problematic, this thesis tries to examine the social welfare thoughts in Confucianism in order to rethink the meaning of social welfare. In contrast to the modern social welfare as a social right, the social welfare in Confucianism was basically regarded as the grace of a king whose purpose was to legitimate his domination. But it was also based upon Confucian humanism and institutionalized into the Confucian govern mentality. It was practiced through the Confucian communality whose basic concept lies in the traditional family system. The social welfare in this society was to be fulfilled automatically by promoting the production and by consolidating the solidarity of the community. The social intervention, therefore, was principal1y indirect and preventive rather than direct and postfactum. The social welfare supports in Confucian societies included not only the material but also the psychological. In these senses, it sounds like that the Confucian welfare system reached the very high standard. Although the real practice should be cautiously differentiated from its ideal state, we may find interesting implications from the social welfare thoughts in Confucianism.
