On the residents' demand for flexible space, mote research should be conducted on the apartments built by the concept of flexible space. In this study, apartments of 40-60 pyeong in size built in the region of Seoul, between 1998 and 2007, are analyzed in terms of the flexible types and the unit plan composition. To reflect the changes in people's perception of residential quality-preference for a residence with a good view, over for the direction that a residence faces, more rooms are placed on the front bay. From the analyses of this study, flexible unit plans are classified into 6 types; and it was found that, as the size of apartments gets larger, the livingroom and the dinning room tend to be placed on the front bay. After grouping rooms with a similar function into the spatial zones of the master bedroom, children's room, the livingroom, and the dinning room, flexible types are analyzed in terms of the location of rooms. The results of this study will be able to contribute to establishing flexible housing culture that can accommodate the changing needs of residents.

The main purpose of this study is to enhance the quality of welfare facilities and propose the improved welfare facilities for the aged people. Through the research, conclusions are as followed First, Facility standard and provisions of the law should be revised for considering population growth of the aged people. Second, there are 4 plan types in the hall for the aged. Contrary to our expectation, diversity of program was not found however various program planning is needed for considering its different types of plan. Third, according to regulation, space restriction is based on the number of households. Therefore, room and space standard does not depend on the number of people. From now on, in order to improve quality of welfare facilities of the aged, revision of laws and overall facility standard should be implemented in advance.

  • Rural houses are losing their original shape as they mimic the spatial composition of urban houses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to extract the design elements needed for rural housing by applying Christopher Alexander's "A PATTERN LANGUAGE" to Standard Rural-House Design (SRHD). The scope and method of research was to compare and analyze the standard designs (SD) produced and distributed by the 'Korea Rural Community Corporation' from 2009 to 2014. The research result is summarized as follows. 1) The housing layout in the SD ignored the site conditions of various rural areas. 2) Most of the houses were not actively planned, considering that they contain various activities of rural life. 3) There was no room for children and the kitchen was planned to integrate the interior into a flexible space in the form of L.D.K. 4) There was no space plan that could be used as both a leasable annex and office space for the farming community. 5) Many small area plans were made because of the SD plan for couples only in 2014. Although the rural environment and living patterns were ignored in the SD, the diverse pattern language provided by the pattern language was developed as a SD element for rural houses, which is the most suitable housing plan for the farmers' livelihood pattern.

The community centers, categorized into 3 types by the number of visitors, were comparatively analyzed by their programs, operation, and visitors' opinion. 6 community centers in Heungduk-gu, Cheongju-city, their 6 operators, and their 220 visitors were the sample. This study surveyed community centers on the spot about their space characteristics and programs, interviewed operators, and asked questionnaires to visitors. The data of the 3 categorized centers were analyzed by frequency, average, and percentage. The following is the result: 1) The number of visitors was dependent on the type of residence and age of the residents. The activated community centers were found in residence type apartment blocks, and with an age group in its 40s. 2) The space satisfaction was dependent on the year of construction; it was higher with newer buildings and wider sizes. 3) All the centers were affirmative on the communication of the participants of programs. In conclusion, the activation plan of the community center has to comprise a renovation of old buildings, public promotion, and the development of programs taking into consideration the age group of the residents.

  • This study attempted quantitative analysis by space syntax on the plan of a non-hierarchical arrangement, which selected SANAA's work after Almere Stadt Theater, and analyzed the difference in the quantitative value of the non-hierarchical arrangement in plan that appears externally. The analysis results were as follows. First, SANAA's spaces with a non-hierarchical arrangement plan that appears externally showed a definite quantitative value difference, and had a hierarchical space difference in the plan that does not appear externally. Second, the spaces with a high integration value also had a high connectivity value, which is indicated by increasing the number of space openings using the method of giving hierarchy to the non-hierarchical arrangement plan or adjusting the size of the room or location to grant hidden hierarchy. Third, SANAA used exterior corridor rather than interior corridor in grid-type plan to solve the accessibility problem, and the open coat spaces between rooms provide natural lighting and ventilation and are used as equipment that controls the hidden hierarchy of space at the same time.
