  • An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is a special case of multicarrier transmission, where a single data stream is transmitted over a number of lower-rate subcarriers. One of the main reasons to use OFDM is to increase robustness against frequency-selective fading or narrowband interference. However, in the radio systems the distortion introduced by high power amplifiers (HPA's) such as traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA) considered in this paper, is also critical. Since the signal amplitude of the OFDM system is Rayleigh-distributed, the performance of the OFDM system is significantly degraded by the nonlinearity of the HPA in the OFDM transmitter. In this paper, we propose a simplicial canonical piecewise-linear (SCPWL) model based digital predistorter to compensate for nonlinear distortion introduced by an HPA in an OFDM system. Computer simulation is carried on an OFDM system under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels with 16-QAM and 64-QAM modulation schemes and modulator/demodulator implemented with 1024-point FFT/IFFT. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed predistorter achieves significant performance improvement by effectively compensating for the nonlinearity introduced by the HPA.

  • Underwater communications are degraded as a result of inter symbol interference in multipath channels. Therefore, a channel coding scheme is essential for underwater communications. Packets consist of a PN sequence and a data field, and the uncoded PN sequence is used to estimate the frequency and phase offset using a Doppler and phase estimation algorithm. The estimated frequency and phase offset are fed to a coded data field to compensate for the Doppler and phase offset. The PN sequence is generally utilized to acquire the synchronization information, and the bit error rate of an uncoded PN sequence predicts the performance of the coded data field. To ensure few errors, we resort to powerful BCJR decoding algorithms of convolutional codes with rates of 1/2, 2/3, and 3/4. We use this powerful channel coding algorithm to present an efficient receiver structure based on the relation between the bit error of the uncoded PN sequence and coded data field in computer simulations and lake experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive power control scheme employing a self-optimization concept in femtocell systems, in order to improve system capacity, thereby reducing call-drop probability. In the proposed scheme, each femto base station(FBS) controls individual channel's transmission power base on two parameters; the neighboring cell's transmission power for each individual channel which is delivered from a femto-gateway and the received power strength from neighboring cells which is periodically measured by means of a spectrum sensing. Adaptive adjustment of individual channel's transmission power in accordance with femto mobile station(FMS) mobility features can also reduce undesirable handovers and evenly distribute traffic load over all femtocells. In addition, the manipulative control of channel's transmission power is able to keep the system coverage and the call-drop probability within an acceptable range, regardless of density of femtocells. Computer simulation shows that the proposed scheme outperforms existing schemes in terms of the system coverage and the call-drop probability.

  • This paper proposes the algorithm for tracking of the residual phase errors incurred by carrier frequency offset and sampling frequency offset in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems which are suitable for high data rate wireless communications. In the OFDM systems the subcarriers which are orthogonal to each other are modulated by digital data and transmitted simultaneously. The carrier frequency offset causes degradation of signal to noise ratio(SNR) performance and interference between the adjacent subcarriers. The errors in the sampling timing caused by the sampling frequency difference between the transmitter and the receiver sides also cause a major performance degradation in the OFDM systems. The residual error tracking and compensation mechanism is essential in the OFDM system since the carrier and the sampling frequency offset cause the loss of orthogonality resulting in the system performance loss. This paper proposes the scheme where the channel gain and the payload data information are reflected in the residual error tracking process which results in the reduction of the estimation error and the tracking performance improvements under the frequency selective fading wireless channels.

  • Serial links via backplane channels suffer from severe signal integrity problems which are normally caused by channel imperfections, such as flat loss, frequency-dependent loss, reflection, etc. Particularly, the frequency-dependent loss causes ISI(Inter-Symbol-Interference) at signal waveforms. Therefore, adaptive equalizing techniques have been exploited in many products to facilitate the ISI problem. In this paper, we present an analog adaptive equalizer circuit designed in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. It achieves 10Gb/s data transmission through a long 34-inch backplane channel(or transmission line). The post-layout simulations demonstrate $8ps_{p-p}$ jitter with 10mW power dissipation. The core of the adaptive equalizer occupies the area of $0.56mm^2$.

  • In this paper, we present an asymptotical analysis of channel capacity of Bell labs layered space-time (BLAST) architectures based on a zero-forcing (ZF) criterion in the sense of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We begin by introducing a new relationship related to multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel capacity. We prove that Diagonal Bell Labs Space-Time (DBLAST) attains the lower bound for MIMO channels when interference nulling is carried out based on the ZF-criterion. An exact closed-form expression for the probability density function of the channel capacity is analyzed. Based on the asymptotic behavior of the channel capacity of each layer, closed-form expressions for the asymptotic ergodic capacity are derived for BLAST. Based on the analysis presented in this paper, we gain an insight on the channel capacity behavior for a MIMO channel. Computer simulation results have verified the validity and accuracy of the proposed analysis for a wide range of antenna array sizes.

  • The authors present a more accurate analysis of the bit error rate (BER) performance for multicode code division multiple access (CDMA) systems equipped with a multipath interference canceler (MPIC) over multipath fading channels. At first, we consider the problem of previous researches. It is that the previous analyses do not match with simulations even in the case without MPIC. This mismatch also causes the difference between the analysis and simulations when an MPIC is applied. Therefore, what is needed is to verify the reason of this mismatch at the initial stage. Numerical results obtained from the proposed analytical method indicate that the performance mismatch between the previous analysis and simulations is caused by not fie Gaussian approximation which is generally used at the performance analysis of CDMA systems but the additional Gaussian approximation (AGA) for multipath interferences. Based on this effect, we propose a more accurate performance analysis not using AGA and its accuracy is verified by simulations. Furthermore, it is confirmed that the proposed analysis presents an analytical lower bound which can be achieved by MPIC.

  • This paper presents the 8-channel active module operated in Ka-band. The module is designed for the mobile satellite communication antenna systems, and the module structure has the merit to minimize the size and weight of the antenna systems by 30% compared with the conventional systems using the active module composed of single channel. This module was designed to be optimally operated by prohibiting the electrical interference among the individual channels. From the test results of the fabricated 8-channel active module, it can be confirmed that the maximum channel gain error is ${\pm}1.3dB$, the minimum channel output power is 21.5dBm, and the maximum gain variation by phase control is ${\pm}1.0dB$.

  • Acoustic channels are characterized by long multipath spreads that cause inter-symbol interference. The way in which this fact influences the design of the receiver structure is considered. To satisfy performance and throughput, we presented consecutive iterative BCJR (Bahl, Cocke, Jelinek, Raviv) equalization to improve the performance and throughput. To achieve low error performance, we resort to powerful BCJR equalization algorithms that iteratively update probabilistic information between inner decoder and outer decoder. Also, to achieve high throughput, we divide long packet into consecutive small packets, and the estimate channel information of previous packets are compensated to next packets. Based on experimental channel response, we confirmed that the performance is improved for long length packet size.

  • We propose a new beamforming algorithm, which is based on simplex downhill optimization method in the presence of pilot channels in cdma2000 reverse-link, for the rake structure antenna array in DS/CDMA communication system. Our approach uses the desired signal(pilot) covariance matrix and the interference covariance matrix. The beamforming weights are made according to maximum SINR criteria using simplex downhill optimization procedure. Our proposed scheme provides lower computational load, better convergence speed, better performance than existingadaptive beamforming algorithm. The simplex downhill method is well suited to finding the optimal or sub-optimal weight vector, since they require only the value of the deterministic function to be optimized. The rake beamformer performances are also evaluated under several set of practical parameter values with regard to spatial channel model. We also compare the performance between conventional rake receiver and the proposed one under same receiving power.
