  • Although most of observed properties of giant radio relics detected in the outskirts of galaxy clusters could be explained by relativistic electrons accelerated at merger-driven shocks, a few significant puzzles remain. In some relics the shock Mach number inferred from X-ray observations is smaller than that estimated from radio spectral index. Such a discrepancy could be understood, if either the shock Mach number is nder-estimated in X-ray observation due to projection effects, or if pre-existing electrons with a flat spectrum are re-accelerated by a weak shock, retaining the flat spectral form. In this study, we explore these two scenarios by comparing the results of shock acceleration simulations with observed features of the so-called Toothbrush relic in the merging cluster 1RXS J060303.3. We find that both models could reproduce reasonably well the observed radio flux and spectral index profiles and the integrated radio spectrum. Either way, the broad transverse relic profile requires additional post shock electron acceleration by downstream turbulence.

  • Remote sensing data can be integrated into crop models, making simulation improved. A crop model that uses remote sensing data was evaluated for its capability, which was performed through comparing three different methods of canopy measurement for cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.). The measurement methods used were leaf area index(LAI), hand-held remotely sensed perpendicular vegetation index(PVI), and satellite remotely sensed PVI. Simulated values of cotton growth and lint yield showed reasonable agreement with the corresponding measurements when canopy measurements of LAI and hand-held remotely sensed PVI were used for model calibration. Meanwhile, simulated lint yields involving the satellite remotely sensed PVI were in rough agreement with the measured lint yields. We believe this matter could be improved by using remote sensing data obtained from finer resolution sensors. The model not only has simple input requirements but also is easy to use. It promises to expand its applicability to other regions for crop production, and to be applicable to regional crop growth monitoring and yield mapping projects.

  • The objective of this paper is to provide experimental data of Er(rare- earth)doped $SiO_2$thin film made by sputtering methods. The deposition rate of silica glass by sputtering method was 55$\AA$/min. In EDD measurements, the average Er concentration in the deposited film was 0.77(wt%). After annealing at $900^{\circ}C$, the Cl concentration decreased from 3.79(wt%) to 1.52(wt%). The refractive indices of the core $n_1$, cladding $n_2$ were 1.458, 1.558 respectively at 632.8 nm. The refractive index difference between core and cladding, $\Delta$n was 0.1. The refractive index profile of core and cladding interface shows step profile. In the study, $SiO_2$ glass films of Si wafer were successfully doped with active erbium. Therefore, this experimental data will be applicable for fabrications of Er doped planar integrated optical device.

  • We demonstrate how social media content can be used to predict the unemployment rate, a real-world indicator. We present a novel method for predicting the unemployment rate using social media analysis based on natural language processing and statistical modeling. The system collects social media contents including news articles, blogs, and tweets written in Korean, and then extracts data for modeling using part-of-speech tagging and sentiment analysis techniques. The autoregressive integrated moving average with exogenous variables (ARIMAX) and autoregressive with exogenous variables (ARX) models for unemployment rate prediction are fit using the analyzed data. The proposed method quantifies the social moods expressed in social media contents, whereas the existing methods simply present social tendencies. Our model derived a 27.9% improvement in error reduction compared to a Google Index-based model in the mean absolute percentage error metric.

  • Stock price is characterized as being mutable, non-linear and stochastic. These key characteristics are known to have a direct influence on the stock markets globally. Given that the stock price data often contain both linear and non-linear patterns, no single model can be adequate in modelling and predicting time series data. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model cannot deal with non-linear relationships, however, it provides an accurate and effective way to process autocorrelation and non-stationary data in time series forecasting. On the other hand, the neural network provides an effective prediction of non-linear sequences. As a result, in this study, we used a hybrid ARIMA and neural network model to forecast the monthly closing price of the Shanghai composite index and Shenzhen component index.

  • For this purpose, the authors proposed and proved usefulness of the modified mean skin temperature which is integrated mean radiation temperature and the effect of floor contacted heat conduction. The mean radiation temperature is applied form factor between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall of indoor. In addition the floor contacted heat conduction is applied heat transfer coefficient of half cross-legged human body. Eight Korean young men were targeted for the experiment. From the experiment the authors excerpted physiological reaction and psychological reaction in Ondol environment which is combined physiccal environmental factor of artificial climate chamber, air and floor temperature. As a result of the experiment it is confirmed that heat conduction has more impact than heat exchange from existing research for the heat exchange between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall in Ondol thermal environment. Thereby, it is proved the effectiveness of the modified mean skin temperature which is added floor contacted temperature to the Ondol thermal environmental evaluation index.

  • The tourism sector of the Maldives has seen rapid growth since its inception in 1972. One significant development is the transformation of the market composition in recent years. China has surpassed traditional European markets as the single largest source market. In this regard, this study seeks to assess the seasonality in the Maldivian tourism sector using a monthly dataset of visitor arrivals from 2003 to 2019. The seasonality ratio, the seasonality indicator, the Gini coefficient and the seasonal index were used to examine the seasonality patterns. The results of this study show that there are three distinct peaks (January to April, August, and November to December) and two off-peaks (May to July and September) periods. The findings also reveal that the rise of the Chinese market has significantly lessened the seasonality of Maldivian inbound tourism. Finally, some important implications are discussed.

  • A digital logic demodulator for binary FSK signals is presented. The operation is based on the quadricorrelator which is known as an ideal frequency detector. The demodulator is especially suitable for high-speed application, and it can be easily implemented in integrated circuit. Computer simulation results show that the performance of the receiver with digital demodulator converges to that of analog quadricorrelator receiver as the number of mixing axes is increased and the optimum bandwidth depending on a modulation index is slightly wider than that of analog demodulator.

  • An integrated pattern profile distortion is newly proposed to analyze various two-dimensional test patterns. The unit is converted to a time to make parameters comparable for various types of displays. In addition, this can be compared with that of extended blur edge width in time scale, which has been reported.
