  • This paper presents the characteristics for ground impedance of combined three rods according to distance of current probe and frequency using the fall-of-potential method and the testing techniques to minimize the measuring errors are proposed. The fall-of-potential method is theoretically based on the potential and current measuring principle and the measuring error is primarily caused by the position of auxiliary probes. In order to analyze the effects of ground impedance due to the distance of the current probe and frequency, ground impedances were measured in case that the distance of current probe was located from 5[m] to 20[m] and the measuring frequency was ranged in 55~513[Hz]. The results could be help to determine the position of current probe and the measuring frequency when the ground impedance was measured at grounding system.

  • Bio-impedance measurement is a measurement device that can be used to obtain biometric information and diagnose skin diseases using convenience, low cost, and low cost devices. In this study, the bio-impedance was measured using a direct dry gold electrode and a simulation study through animal bio modeling to obtain biometric information in a biometric form. Impedance was measured by inserting electrodes into subcutaneous areas of animal tissue and applying frequencies of 100 uA, 1-100 kHz using a two-electrode method. As a result of the measurement, the resistance of the electrodes is measured high at 5 mm electrodes compared to 7.5 mm and 10 mm electrodes based on 5 mm electrodes. Based on the 5 mm electrode, an average difference of 1.49% was found for the 7.5 mm electrode in the total frequency range, and the impedance difference was confirmed to be 2.624% for the 10 mm electrode. In the future, the research results are expected to be valuable in designing and manufacturing electrodes for bio-inserted electrocardiogram sensors.

  • This paper deals with the numerical method of calculating the frequency-dependent impedances of grounding electrodes. The proposed electromagnetic field approach is based on the solutions to Maxwell's equations obtained from the method of moment in the frequency domain. In order to evaluate the quality of the proposed simulation method, the frequency-dependent impedances of horizontally-buried ground electrodes were presented. The program for calculating the current distributions and impedances of grounding electrodes was implemented in MATLAB. The grounding impedances of two 10m and 50m long horizontal ground electrodes were measured and simulated in the frequency range from 100Hz to 10MHz for easy analysis and comparison. Also the simulated results were compared with those calculated from a sophisticated computer program CDEGS (HIFREQ module). As a result, the resultant results of frequency-dependent impedances obtained by using the numerical simulation method proposed in this work are in good agreement with experimental data. The validity of the approach techniques was confirmed.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid control method of using impedance control and the computed-torque control for biped robot locomotion. Computed torque control is used for supporting (constrained) leg. For the free leg, the impedance control is used, where different values of impedance parameters are used depending on the gait phase of the biped robot. To reduce the magnitude of an impact and guarantee a stable footing when a foot contacts with the ground, this paper proposes to increase the damping of the leg drastically and to modify the reference trajectory of the leg. Computer simulations with a 3 -dof environment model for which a combination of a nonlinear and a linear compliant models is used, show that the proposed controller is superior to the computed-torque controllers in reducing impacts and stabilizing the footing.

  • In this paper, we present the design method for a low-pass type inverter, which can effectively suppress the spurious response associated with band-pass filters. The inverter has a length of ${\lambda}/4$ and employs not only a stepped-impedance configuration but also asymmetrical and bending structures in order to improve frequency selectivity and compactness. The inverter is applied as an impedance/admittance inverter to the ultra-wideband (UWB) band-pass filter. The UWB band-pass filter configuration is based on a stub band-pass filter consisting of quarter-wavelength impedance inverters and shunt short-circuited stubs ${\lambda}/4$ in length. The asymmetrical stepped-impedance low-pass type inverter improves not only the spurious responses, but also the return loss characteristics associated with a UWB band-pass filter, while a compact size is maintained. The UWB band-pass filter using the proposed inverters is fabricated and tested. The measured results show excellent attenuation characteristics at out-band frequencies, which exceed 18 dB up to 39 GHz. The insertion loss within the pass-band (from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz) is below 1.7 dB, the return loss is below 10 dB, and the group delay is below 1 ns.

  • This paper presents recent developments in an extremely compact, wireless impedance sensor node (the WID3, $\underline{W}$ireless $\underline{I}$mpedance $\underline{D}$evice) for use in high-frequency impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM), sensor diagnostics and validation, and low-frequency (< ~1 kHz) vibration data acquisition. The WID3 is equipped with an impedance chip that can resolve measurements up to 100 kHz, a frequency range ideal for many SHM applications. An integrated set of multiplexers allows the end user to monitor seven piezoelectric sensors from a single sensor node. The WID3 combines on-board processing using a microcontroller, data storage using flash memory, wireless communications capabilities, and a series of internal and external triggering options into a single package to realize a truly comprehensive, self-contained wireless active-sensor node for SHM applications. Furthermore, we recently extended the capability of this device by implementing low-frequency analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters so that the same device can measure structural vibration data. The compact sensor node collects relatively low-frequency acceleration measurements to estimate natural frequencies and operational deflection shapes, as well as relatively high-frequency impedance measurements to detect structural damage. Experimental results with application to SHM, sensor diagnostics and low-frequency vibration data acquisition are presented.

  • Micro-grid is connected to the main power grid through a static switch. One of the critical issues in micro-grids is protection which must disconnect the micro-grid from the network in short-circuit contingencies. Protective methods of micro-grid mainly follow the model of distribution system protection. This protection scheme suffers from improper operation due to the presence of single-phase loads, imbalance of three-phase loads and occurrence of power swings in micro-grid. In this paper, a new method which prevents from improper performance of static micro-grid protection is proposed. This method works based on artificial neural network (ANN) and able to differentiate short circuit from power swings by measuring impedance and the rate of impedance variations in PCC bus. This new technique provides a protective system with higher reliability.

  • In this paper, transmitted sound reduction performance of smart panels is studied according to different piezoelectric materials with piezoelectric shunt damping. Peizo-damping is implemented by using a newly proposed tuning method. This method is based on electrical impedance model and maximizing the dissipated energy at the shunt circuit. By measuring the electrical impedance at the piezoelectric patch bonded on a structure, an equivalent electrical model is constructed near the system resonance frequency. After shunting elements are connected to the equivalent circuit, the shunt parameters are optimally searched based on the criterion of maximizing the dissipated energy at the shunt circuit. Transmitted sound reduction performance is compared according to different piezoelectric materials with peizo-damping. Two piezoelectric materials are selected: PZT-5 and QuickPack IDE actuator. When resonant shunt circuit is considered, the use of PZT-5 exhibited the good sound reduction performance.
