  • The aim of this study is to confirm the physicochemical property and hazard of thinner (012), which is a diluent of enamel paint used for floor coating for waterproofing and oil painting for the outer wall. The literatures of physicochemical property and hazard of thinner were surveyed and its physicochemical property were evaluated. And then, the inhalation toxicity of thinner affecting the central nervous system and reproductive organs in rats were examined by subchronic (6 h./day. 5 days/ week for 13 weeks) inhalation test. 1) According to the 13-week subchronic inhalation test, there were no significant changes in clinical test and body weight. However, a significant evidence of toxicity was observed in the hematological test and organ weight such as heart, kidney, liver and brain (p<0.01) in the 200 ppm and 1,000 ppm exposure groups in a dose response manner. In the histopathology analysis, there were no significant evidence of toxicity. Therefore, thinner was not classified as an organ targeted toxic agent. In case of Harmfulness, it could be classified as a chronic toxic agent 3($500 ppm/4hr, rat). 2) The reproductive toxicity such as extension of the period of estrous cycle, reduction of serum estradiol concentration and increase of frequency of the abnormal sperm was observed in the 1,000 ppm exposed animals. 3) The result of the physicochemical property of the test material showed that the specific gravity was 0.793, boiling point $155.8^{\circ}C$, steam pressure 2.1 kPa, ignition point $34.5^{\circ}C$, and spontaneous ignition point $280^{\circ}C$. The endothermic and exothermic values were 371.4 J/g and 159.1 J/g. respectively. The explosion limit was 214 mg/l. These data showed that thinner could be classified as an explosion agent level 1.2 and ignitive liquid agent 3 ($23-60^{\circ}C$) according to the notification No. 2008-1 of the Labor Ministry, "Classifying Standard of Chemical Materials."

  • Although the rare earth elements (REEs) recycling industry is expected to increase worldwide in hightech industry, regulations for worker safety have yet to be established. This study was conducted to understand the potential hazard/risk of REE recycling and to support the establishment of regulations or standards. We review the extensive literature on the toxicology, occupational safety, and health issues, and epidemiological surveys related to the REEs, and propose suitable management measures. REE recycling has four key steps such as collection, dismantling, separation, and processing. In these processes, hazardous substances, such as REEs-containing dust, metals, and chemicals, were used or occurred, including the risk of ignition and explosion, and the workers can be easily exposed to them. In addition, skin irritation and toxicities for respiratory, nervous, and cardiovascular systems with the liver toxicity were reported; however, more supplementary data are needed, owing to incompleteness. Therefore, monitoring systems concerning health, environmental impacts, and safety need to be established, based on additional research studies. It is also necessary to develop innovative and environment-friendly recycling technologies, analytical methods, and biomarkers with government support. Through these efforts, the occupational safety and health status will be improved, along with the establishment of advanced REE recycling industry.

  • Aluminum dusts, from micro to nano-scale, are widely used in various applications such as propulsion and pyrotechnic compounds because of high burning rate. In this study, the pyrolysis hazard of aluminum dusts with different median size (sized by 70 nm, 100 nm, $6{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$) were investigated experimentally. The thermal decomposition characteristics of aluminum dusts with the variation of heating rate were investigated using TGA (Thermo gravimetric analysis) and was estimated the minimum ignition temperature from temperature of weight gain in nano and micro-sized aluminum dusts with different diameter. In the same condition of heating rate, the temperature of weight gain in aluminum dust layers increased with increasing of particle size and increased with increasing of heating rates in air. From the results, it was estimated that the pyrolysis hazard of aluminum dusts decrease with increasing of mean diameter.

  • The explosionproof apparatus is a devices that is enclosed in a case capable of withstanding an explosion of a specified gas or vapor that may occur within it and of preventing the ignition of a specified gas or vapor surrounding the enclosure by sparks, flashes, or explosion of the gas or vapor within, and that operates at such an external temperature that a surrounding flammable atmosphere will not be ignited thereby This kind of exeplosionfproof devices should be installed suitable for the characteristics of the space or process condition that should be protected to prevent explosion or fire. But, due to the lack of information and techniques on the explosionproof technology, some dangerous area is not properly protected from an explosion or it cost too much to implement the explosionproof devices. In this report, the basic guidelines and several case studies of explosionproof devices installation will be introduced to be of help to field safety engineer.

  • In the hazardous areas where explosive liquids, vapors and gases exist, electrical apparatus/equipment should have explosion-proof construction. The consuming of liquefied natural gas(LNG) has markedly increased in the industrial field, especially in aspect of some thermoprocessing equipment, boiler, dryer, furnace, annealer, kiln, regenerative thermal oxidizer(RTO) and so on. Because it has many merits, clean fuel, safety, no transportation/storage facility and so on. It is strongly recommend that the classification of hazards has to be decided to prevent and protect explosion which may occur in thermoprocessing equipment. In this paper, the operated thermoprocessing equipments in industrial area investigated and explosion risk assessment about LNG leakage from its facilities was performed through numerical calculation and computer simulation. Finally, we suggest the systemic/technical approach for safety assessments of thermoprocessing equipments consumed LNG fuel which are specially subjected to classification of hazardous area.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the operating characteristics of a ventilating fan due to overload and overheating. The experiment assumed the forcible restraint of the blade due to external objects and the aging process. We analyzed the experimental temperature and operating characteristics of the three places in the interior of the ventilating fan. As a result of the analysis, the temperature distribution was highest to lowest in the following order: the thermal fuse, the motor inside, and the above winding. There was smell of burning enamel in the restraint experiment. Following the thermal fuse operation, the insulation of motor winding was good. In the case of rated voltage and new ventilating fan restrained for about 4hours, and the results of restraint experiments in the presence or absence of the thermal fuse, no risk of deformation or fire due to overheating was identified. Henceforward, ignition hazard experiments will be required for additional factors of aging, pollution, and defective insulation.

  • We investigated experimentally the properties of dust explosion through lycopodium particle clouds in a duct to provide the fundamental knowledge. Propagating dust flames in the vertical duct of 120 cm height and 12 cm square cross-section were observed by digital video camera and flame front is visualized using by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) system. As the result, when the same average dust concentration existed in the vertical duct, downward flame propagation was faster than the upward flame propagation, its rate increased with dust concentration in 300g/$m^3$. Post flames were caused by the ignition of unburned particles which flowed into the rear region of flame from passage between flame and duct wall, and they generated regardless of duct condition. Also, it was found that appearance frequency of post flames during dust flame propagations increased with the increase of dust concentration.

  • To study the combustion characteristics of forest fuel by fire intensity, the experiment of combustion characteristics on Pinus Densiflora living leaves, which is the weakest species to the forest fire, was delivered, using variables of heat flux(25 kW/$m^2$, 50 kW/$m^2$, 75 kW/$m^2$). With the equipment of Cone calorimeter, the characteristics of ignition, heat, smoke release, CO and $CO_2$ release, and mass loss were analyzed. Pinus Densiflora living leaves containing moisture of 60.66% were not ignited at the heat flux of variables 25 kW/$m^2$, 50 kW/$m^2$, 75 kW/$m^2$. In proportion to the heat flux value, heat release amount and heat release rate reached maximum value rapidly: higher variables came to the maximum by the half rapidity and the maximum value were twice higher than the former lower variables respectively. As for the smoke release, the less heat flux the variable had, the more smoke release it had, due to incomplete combustion. The release amount of CO and $CO_2$ had more maximum value as the heat flux increased and more radiant heat meaned more carbon oxide. When the forest fire breaks out, therefore, a great amount of CO and $CO_2$ will be released by Pinus Densiflora.
