  • The maximum likelihood estimation is not robust against outliers in the logistic regression. Thus we propose an algorithm for the robust estimation, which identifies the bad leverage points and vertical outliers by the V-mask type criterion, and then strives to dampen the effect of outliers. Our main finding is that, by an appropriate selection of weights and factors, we could obtain the logistic estimates with high breakdown point. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by means of the correct classification rate on the basis of real-life and artificial data sets. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm is superior to the maximum likelihood estimation in terms of the classification.

  • Chrysanthemums showing leaf mottling were collected from three southern locations in Korea in 1998. Two kinds of viruses were isolated from the leaves and were identified as tomato aspermy virus ch-TAV) and chrysanthemum virus B (ch-CVB), according to their host range, morphology, intracellular location, agar gel double diffusion test, and double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) analysis. The purified ch-TAV was spherical particles of approximately 29 nm in diameter and ch-CVB was filamentous particles of 685 nm long. Inclusion bodies were not observed in ch-TAV and/or ch-CVB infected chrysanthemum. ch-TAV showed positive serological reaction with TAV antiserum (ATCC-127) but not with CMV-pepper antiserum. In dsRNA analysis, four kinds of viral dsRNA were observed on ch-TAV and one viral dsRNA was shown on ch-CVB. Rate of co-infection with TAV and CVB in commercial chrysanthemums was 20.9%. On the other hand, infection with CVB alone was 97.2%. However, chrysanthemums naturally infected with TAV alone were not found.

  • Many types of cancer, current therapy other than surgery and/or radiotherapy was of only limited efficacy. At the basic chinese traditional medicine(TCM) there was increased understanding of the additional basic and clinical neoplasm treatment research. The metastasis and recurrence of neoplasm was the basis of yudu(餘毒) on remained neoplasm cell and stagnation of blood, thermotoxo, phlegm, asthenia of healthy enerngy, stagnation of vital energy. The principles therapy of neoplasm on metastasis and recurrence was based on knowledge of the method of support the healthy energy and strengthen the body resistance, promote blood circulation to remove blood stasis, clear away heat and toxic materials, dissipate phlegm and disperse the accumulation of evils, regulate vital energy and disperse the depressed vital energy. But the major clinical features of neoplasm was to be considered in developing a treatment plan include (1) distinguish between clinical and pathologic staging - acute and chronic, (2) classification of pathologic pattern, and (3) distinction of body situation : for examples asthenia - sthenia etc. It was most important to distinguish between supporting the healthy and eliminating the evil factors and to treat differently at the root and the branch cause of a neoplasm. This paper's results indicate that identification and effective use of TCM medicines inhibited netastasis and decreased recurrence and then we were able to expect increasing survival rate.

  • In order to determine the vector species of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea chiggers were individually dissected, and internal contents were tested for Rickettsia tsutsugamushi organisms by means of indirect FA test, and each exoskeleton was mounted on slide for identification. Among 4,142 chiggers collected from 48 Apodemus agrarius at nine different localities during the period of July-November, 1989, 990 chiggers of 10 species of Trombiculidae were dissected and tested. Rickettsiae were confirmed in two Leptotrembidium pallidum larvae out of 447 tested, giving 0.4% of the infection rate. The chiggers of the other species tested were found negative.

  • Phyllosticta melochiae, an endophytic fungus isolated from the healthy leaves of Melochia corchorifolia, was screened for the production of an anticancer drug, taxol on modified liquid medium and potato dextrose broth medium in culture for the first time. The presence of taxol was confirmed by spectroscopic and chromatographic methods of analysis. The amount of taxol produced by this fungus was quantified by high performance liquid chromatography. The maximum amount of fungal taxol production was recorded as $274{\mu}g/L$. The production rate was increased to $5.5{\times}1,000$ fold than that found in the culture broth of earlier reported fungus, Taxomyces andreanae. The fungal taxol extracted also showed a strong cytotoxic activity in the in vitro culture of tested human cancer cells by apoptotic assay. The results designate that the fungal endophyte, P. melochiae is an excellent candidate for an alternate source of taxol supply and can serve as a potential species for genetic engineering to enhance the production of taxol to a higher level.

  • Drug discovery is a long process with a low rate of successful new therapeutic discovery regardless of the advances in information technologies. Identification of candidate proteins is an essential step for the drug discovery and it usually requires considerable time and efforts in the drug discovery. The drug discovery is not a logical, but a fortuitous process. Nevertheless, considerable amount of information on drugs are accumulated in UniProt, NCBI, or DrugBank. As a result, it has become possible to try to devise new computational methods classifying drug target candidates extracting the common features of known drug target proteins. In this paper, we devise a method for drug target protein classification by using weighted feature summation and Support Vector Machine. According to our evaluation, the method is revealed to show moderate accuracy $85{\sim}90%$. This indicates that if the devised method is used appropriately, it can contribute in reducing the time and cost of the drug discovery process, particularly in identifying new drug target proteins.

  • This work was performed to confirm the molecular discrimination through the nrITS1 sequences among 3 taxa of Scirpus L. sensu lato (s.l.) species. S. planiculmis represented only 2 base sequence variations with S. maritimus in spite that they showed different morphological features. The nucleotide sequences of the ITS1 region from S. planiculmis were shown to have 99.1% homology with S. maritimus and 60.4% homology with S. triqueter. Although the morphology of S. planiculmis is similar with S. triqueter, molecular basis of the size and sequences on ITS1 region were shown to have distinctive differences. For divergency investigation on same sites and metapopulation, sequencing was conducted on ITS1 region with partial 5.8S and 18S regions. All plants of each species collected at the same site had identical band size pattern and sequences. Intraspecific molecular divergency was not identified in spite that these species live in different wetland sites. The ITS1 sequences described here provided a powerful genetic tool for phylogenetic studies which was difficult by morphological identification as high rate of morphological plasticity.

  • The aim of the present work was the study of instability in a loose sand from Les Dunes beach in Ain Beninan, Algeria, where the Boumerdes earthquake occurred in 2003. This earthquake caused significant structural damages and claimed the lives of many people. Damages caused to infrastructures were strongly related to phenomena of liquefaction. The study was based on the results of two drained and six undrained triaxial tests over a local sand collected in a region where liquefaction occurred. All the tests hereby analyzed followed compression stress-paths in monotonic conditions and the specimens were isotropically consolidated, since the objective was to study the instability due to static loading as part of a more general project, which also included cyclic studies. The instability was modeled with the second-order work increment criterion. The definition of the instability line for Les Dunes sand and its relation with yield surfaces allowed the identification of the region of potential instability and helped in the evaluation of the susceptibility of soils to liquefy under undrained conditions and its modeling. The dilatancy rate was studied in the points where instability began. Some mixed tests were also simulated, starting with drained conditions and then changing to undrained conditions at different time steps.

  • The performance of five newly evolved cross breeds were evaluated across seasons to understand the genotype and environment interactions and their stability under fluctuating tropical environmental conditions along with control hybrids $PM{\times}CSR2$ and $APM1{\times}APS8$. The data was collected on eight economic traits namely fecundity, yield per 10,000 larvae by number, yield per 10,000 larvae by weight, survival rate, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio and filament length. The data was subjected for Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and relevant statistical methods. The performance data obtained was further subjected for multiple trait evaluation index method. The ranks were adjudicated based on the index values. The two hybrids viz., $MSO3{\times}APS45$ and $MSO1{\times}APS12$ performed well under diversified environmental conditions indicating their overall stability and superiority. These hybrids revealed highly significant (p < 0.01) improvement for the majority of the traits over the control hybrids.
