Rainfall is one of crucial factors that impact on our environment. Rainfall data is important in water resources management, flood forecasting, and designing hydraulic structures. However, it is not available in some rural watersheds without rain gauges. Thus, effective ways of interpolating the available records are needed. Despite many widely used spatial interpolation methods, few studies have investigated rainfall center characteristics. Based on the theory that the spatial distribution of convective rainfall event has a definite center with maximum rainfall, we present a mathematical interpolation method to estimate convective rainfall distribution and indicate the rainfall center location and the center rainfall volume. We apply the method to estimate three convective rainfall events in Santa Catalina Island where reliable hydrological data is available. A cross-validation technique is used to evaluate the method. The result shows that the method will suffer from high relative error in two situations: 1) when estimating the minimum rainfall and 2) when estimating an external site. For all other situations, the method's performance is reasonable and acceptable. Since the method is based on a continuous function, it can provide distributed rainfall data for distributed hydrological model sand indicate statistical characteristics of given areas via mathematical calculation.
Regional frequency analysis is often used to overcome the limitation of point frequency analysis to estimate probability rainfall depths. However, point frequency analysis is still used in drought analyses. This study proposed a practical method to categorize the homogeneous regions of drought characteristics for the analyses of regional characteristics of droughts in Korea. Using rainfall data from 58 observation stations managed by the Korea Meteorological Administration, this study calculated drought attributes, i.e., mean drought indices for various durations using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and drought severities expressed by durations, depth, and intensity. The drought attributes provided useful information for categorizing stations into the hydrological homogeneous regions. This study introduced a cluster analysis with K-means techniques to group observation stations. The cluster analysis grouped observation stations into 6 regions in Korea. The data in the hydrological homogeneous region would be used in spatial analysis of drought characteristics and drought regional frequency analysis.

Unmeasured value of water for human lives is widely approved, but the water as one of natural resources cannot be evaluated with ease since it changes itself ceaselessly by flowing-out or transforming the phase. Major objectives of the study concerned consequently with investigating its potentiality and evaluating its time seriesly availabity in a volumatic unit. And the study was performed to give the accurate original data to the planners concerned. Some developed rational methods of predicting runoff related to hydrological factors as precipitation, were to be discusseed for their theorical background and to be introduced whether they needed some corrections or not, comparing their estimation with actual runoff from synthetic unit-hydrograph methods. To do so, the study was performed to select Kongju Station, located at the watershed of the Keum River, and to collect such hydrological data from 1962 to 1972 as runoff, water level, precipitation, and so on. On the other hand, the hydrological characteristics of runoff were concluded more reasonably in numerical values, with calculating the the ratio of daily runoff to annual discharge of the flow in percentage, as. the distribution ratio of runoff. The results of the study can be summarized as follows; (1) There needed some consideration to apply the Kajiyama's Formula for predicting monthly runoff of rivers in Korea.(2) The rational methods of predicting runoff might be recommended to become less theorical and reliable than the unique analyzation of data concerned in each given water basin. The results from the Keum River prepared above would be available to any programms concerned. (3) The most accurate estimation for runoff could be suggested to synthetic unithydrograph methods calculated from the relation between each storm and runoff. However it was not contained in the study. (4) The relations between rainfall and runoff at KongJu Station were as following table. The table showed some intersting implications about the characteristics of runoff at site, which indicated that the runoff during three months from July to September approached total of 60% of quantity while precipitation concentrated on the other three from June to August. And there were some months which had more amount of runoff than expected values calculated from the precipitation, such as Febrary, March, August, September, Octover, and December, shown in the table. Such implications should be suggested to meet any correction factors in the future formulation concerned with the subjects, if any rational methods would be required.

Integrated modelling of surface water and groundwater has become important to satisfy the growing demands for sustainable water resources and improved water quality. In this study, the integrated model of the semi-distributed watershed model, SWA T and the fully-distributed groundwater flow model, MODFLOW is applied to Musirn river basin for the purpose of investigating its applicability to reproduce watershed-scale hydrological processes. This objective is accomplished by first demonstrating good agreement between the simulated discharge hydrographs with the measured hydrographs for the period of 2001 -2004 while simultaneously calibrating the calculated groundwater level distribution to observation wells. Next, the integrated model is used to evaluate the effect of different temporal precipitation averages on hydrodynamic processes of streamflow, percolation, recharge and groundwater discharge. Moreover, comprehensive simulations are performed to present the relationships between monthly precipitation and each hydrological component, and to analyze the temporal-spatial variability of recharge. The results show that the components are highly interrelated, and that the heterogeneity of watershed characteristics such as subbasin slope, land use, soil type causes a significant spatial variation of recharge. Overall it is concluded that the model is capable of reproducing the temporally and spatially varied surface and subsurface hydrological processes at the watershed scale.

As the occurrence of drought is recently on the rise, the reliable drought forecasting is required for developing the drought mitigation and proactive management of water resources. This study developed a probabilistic hydrological drought forecasting method using the Bayesian Networks and drought propagation relationship to estimate future drought with the forecast uncertainty, named as the Propagated Bayesian Networks Drought Forecasting (PBNDF) model. The proposed PBNDF model was composed with 4 nodes of past, current, multi-model ensemble (MME) forecasted information and the drought propagation relationship. Using Palmer Hydrological Drought Index (PHDI), the PBNDF model was applied to forecast the hydrological drought condition at 10 gauging stations in Nakdong River basin. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was applied to measure the forecast skill of the forecast mean values. The root mean squared error (RMSE) and skill score (SS) were employed to compare the forecast performance with previously developed forecast models (persistence forecast, Bayesian network drought forecast). We found that the forecast skill of PBNDF model showed better performance with low RMSE and high SS of 0.1~0.15. The overall results mean the PBNDF model had good potential in probabilistic drought forecasting.

Hydrological characteristics and urbanization effects in the Gap river catchment were investigated employing the SWAT model. The hydrological characteristics analysis showed that total runoff in the whole catchment from 2001 to 2004 consists of 44% of groundwater flow, 6% of lateral flow and 50% of surface flow under year 2000 landuse conditions. The analysis of urbanization effect using different landuse maps for year 1975 and 2000 indicated that although 5% increase in urbanized areas did not significantly impact on the total runoff in the whole catchment, a sub-basin where urbanized area increased by 32% over the past 30 years showed $68{\sim}73%$ decrease in groundwater flow and $22{\sim}66%$ increase in surface flow. It was found that urbanization decreased overall soil moisture and percolation rate except for some increase in soil moisture during dry season. Urbanization effect was found more sensitive during a dry year which has less rainfall and higher evapotranspiration than during a wet year. Therefore, from the results of this study we could infer increased flood damage during wet season and dried stream during dry season due to urbanization. To conclude, the results of this study can provide fundamental information to the eco-friendly restoration project for the three major rivers (Gap-cheon, Yudeung-cheon and Daejeon-cheon) in Daejeon Metropolitan City.

Flood is one of the major natural disasters affecting millions of people. Thailand also, frequently faces with this type of disaster. Especially, 2011 mega flood in Central Thailand, inundated highway severely attributed to the failure of national economic and risk to life. Lesson learned from such an extreme event caused flood monitoring and warning becomes one of the sound mitigations. The highway flood hazard mapping accomplished in this research is one of the strategies. This is due to highway flood is the potential risk to life and limb, and potential damage to property. Monitoring and warning therefore help reducing live and property losses. In this study, degree of highway flood hazard was assessed by weighting factors for each cause of the highway flood using Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA) based Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). These weighting factors are the essential information to classify the degree of highway flood hazard to enable pinpoint on flood monitoring and flood warning in hazard areas. The highway flood causes were then investigated. It was found that three major factors influence to the highway flood are namely the highway characteristics, the hydrological characteristics and the land topography characteristics. The weight of importance for each cause of the highway flood in the whole country was assessed by weighting 3 major factors influence to the highway flood. According to the result of MCA analysis, the highway, the hydrological and the land topography characteristics were respectively weighted as 35, 35 and 30 percent influence to the cause of highway flood. These weighting factors were further utilized to classify the degree of highway flood hazard. The Weight Linear Combination (WLC) method was used to compute the total score of all highways according to each factor. This score was later used to categorize highway flood as high, moderate and low degree of hazard levels. Highway flood hazard map accomplished in this research study is applicable to serve as the handy tool for highway flood warning. However, to complete the whole warning process, flood water level monitoring system for example the camera gauge should be installed in the hazard highway. This is expected to serve as a simple flood monitor as part of the warning system during such extreme or critical event.

Most of hydrological processes of groundwater recharge generally are occupied a rainfall, and recharged an aquifer along infiltrate into subsurface. These processes mainly have an influence by hydrological characteristics and topographic gradient of the aquifer. Development of water resources and its management is not good because of temporal and spatial disproportion in local rainfall. In order to deal with insufficiency of water resources from now on, development of groundwater dam requires a plan of a sustainable of new water resources. These are necessary that investigation of construction area of groundwater dam, effective groundwater development interconnected with surface water and groundwater, and assessment of an application of groundwater dam for utilization of water resources. Tn this study we were derived the input data by geological survey, hydraulic and hydrological analysis around Hoengchun-river, located in Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam Province where is a plan area for construction of groundwater dam. Based on input data we were carried out the interconnected analysis of surface water and groundwater using the SWAT-MODFLOW, and predicted groundwater fluctuation of its construction before and after.
