  • This paper proposes a solution to the problems of constructing and installing sway braces for existing standpipes in narrow spaces and pits. The study develops a floor-fixed sway brace for a narrow space that can support the ground area under horizontal seismic loads (X-axis, Y-axis) as well as vertical seismic loads (Z-axis). The results of structural analysis using SolidWorks simulation showed that the eccentric load was generated in the first design according to the anchored position along the vertical direction, and the problem of exceeding the allowable stress of the material along the horizontal and vertical directions. In the second design model, deformation caused by the eccentric load along the vertical direction, similar to the first design model, did not occur. The maximum strain rate was 0.17%, which is approximately 12.84% less than the first design model (Maximum strain rate of 13.01%). It was confirmed that the structural stability and durability improved. Compressive and tensile load testing of the prototypes showed that all of them meet the performance criteria of the standard.

  • Recently, direct load analysis using ship motion program is required to confirm structural safety for the Post-Panamax class large container carrier. However, there is no exact comparative study data for structural response between 20 and 30 wave load. So, in this paper, to compare the hull girder stress response between 20 versus 3D wave load calculation method, direct load analysis and global F.E analysis have been performed for three kinds of large container vessels using each 20 and 30 wave load calculation program. The results of 2D wave load RAO(Response Amplitude Operator) of each dominant load parameter(vertical, torsional and horizontal moment) are generally bigger than that of 30 results, especially in vertical wave bending moment. And the results of structural analysis based on the equivalent design wave method shows that there is a big difference in view of stress, but the stress distribution is very similar for each wave load case.

  • In this study, an optimized design of a triaxial load cell has been developed by the use of finite element analysis, design of experiment and response surface method. The developed optimal design was further validated by both stress-strain analysis and natural vibration analysis under an applied load of 30 kgf. When vertical, horizontal, and axial loads of 30 kgf were applied to the load cell with the optimal design, the calculated strains were satisfied with the required strain range of $500{\times}10^{-6}{\pm}10%$. The natural vibration analysis exhibited that the fundamental natural frequency of the optimally designed load cell was 5.56 kHz and higher enough than a maximum frequency of 0.17 kHz which can be applied to the load cell for wind-tunnel tests. The satisfactory sensitivity in all triaxial directions also suggests that the currently proposed design of the triaxial load cell enables accurate measurements of the multi-axial forces in wind-tunnel tests.

  • The purpose of this study is to closely examine the influence of the surcharge load applied to the retaining wall through some model tests, in which wall stiffness in each stage of excavation, horizontal displacement of the retaining wall and surface displacement of the backfill according to wall stiffness and ground conditions, and change and distribution of the earth pressure applied to it were measured and their values were produced, then these values were mutually compared with their theoretical values and their values after analysis of the data obtained at the field, and they were analytically studied, in order to closely examine the influence of the surcharge load applied to the retaining wall. Findings from this study are as follows: The shape of ground surface settlement curve on the model ground under surcharge load, different from the distribution curve of regular probabilities which is of a shape of ground surface settlement under no surcharge load, appears in that settlement in an arching shape shows where the center part of surcharge load shows the maximum settlement. In examining the maximum horizontal displacement with the surcharge load applied to each stage of excavation, it occured at the point of 0.8H(excavation depth) when finally excavated. Regarding the range in which the displacement of the retaining wall increases according to application of surcharge load, the increment of displacement showed till the point of depth which is of two times of the distance of load from the upper part of the wall. Also since each displacement of the foundation plate caused by the ground surface settlement according to each stage of excavation occured most significantly at the final stage. Also since regarding wall stiffness, the wall of its thickness of 4mm(flexible coefficient $p:480m^3/t$), produced maximum 3 times of wall stiffness than its thickness of 9mm(flexible coefficient $p: 40m^3/t$), it was found out that influence of wall stiffness is so significant.

  • In this paper, we study the response of several anisotropic systems to buried transient line loads. The problem is mathematically formulated based on the equations of motion in the constitutive relations. The load is in form of a normal stress acting with arbitrary axis on the plane of monoclinic symmetry. Plane wave equation is coupled with vertical shear wave, longitudinal wave and horizontal shear wave. We first considered the equation of motion in reference coordinate system, where the line load is coincident with symmetry axis of the orthotrioic material. Then the equation of motion is transformed with respect to general coordiante system with azimuthal angle by using transformation tensor. The load is first described as a body force in the equations of the motion for the infinite media and then it is mathematically characterized. Subsequently the results for semi-infinite spaces is also obtained by using superposition of the infinite medium solution together with a scattered solution from the free surface. Consequently explicit solutions for the displacements are obtained by using Cargniard-DeHoop contour. Numerical results which are drawn from concrete examples of orthotropic material belonging to monoclinic symmetry are demonstrated.

  • This study performed to evaluated musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) during sitting work. The musculskeletal system is affected by various work factors such as strength, weight, posture, repetition, duration and exertion. Ergonomic study on sitting work is necessary to evaluate these factors affecting human body. But the strength and work load data by the work factors are insufficient in Korea. Therefore, this study evaluated the work load using the elcctromyogram(EMG) and measured the arm strength by arm posture and push pull work during sitting work. to evaluated muscle load, the vertical height and horizontal angle of arm were adjusted around acromion. And EMG data were recorded on pc during the test.

  • This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns. The columns were subjected to a constant axial load and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement (ps = 0.96, 1.44 per cent) and axial load ratio (0.05, 0.1, 0.2 P/Po) and strength $(350kgf/cm^2,\;600kgf/cm^2)$. Test results show that bridge columns with 50 per cent higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-02 showed ductile behaviour. For bridge columns with axial load ratio(P/Po) less than 0.2, the ratio of Mmax over Mad, nominal moment capacity predicted by ACI 318-02 provisions, is consistently greater than 1 with approximately a 20 percent margin of safty.

  • Numerical methods are developed for solving the elastica and buckling load of cantilever column with constant volume, subjected to a compressive end load. The linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers with the regular polygon cross-sections are considered, whose material volume and span length are always held constant. The differential equations governing the elastica of buckled column are derived. The Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equations, and the Regula-Falsi method is used to determine the horizontal deflection at free end and the buckling load, respectively. The numerical methods developed herein for computing the elastica and the buckling loads of the columns are found to be efficient and reliable.

  • Pneumatic actuators have greater power to weight ratio than electric ones, but they have been rarely used as robotic actuators because of poor accuracy resulted from nonliearity of air. On the other hand, electric servo motors have glld controllability, but they have poor power to weight ratio. For the heavy load handling robot a combined actuating method was developed for vertical and horizontal axes of RISTBOT-ll which handles up to 250kgf load. In this paper, the control method is implemented and analyzed for the manufactured heavy load handling robot.

  • A new load surface method for reliability of caisson type breakwater was proposed. Linear functions for horizontal wave force and uplift force were estimated by using water level and wave height then they were applied to the reliability analysis of breakwater using first order reliability method(FORM). In the numerical example, sliding and overturning failure probability of caisson type breakwater were analyzed by using load surface and they were compared with those by Monte Carlo simulation.
