  • Recently polymer insulators are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymer insulators for transmission and distribution line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage(UHV) transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. In this paper, polymer line post insulator has been designed and investigated electric field distribution by FEM. Designed LP insulators have been tested as insulator performance test, such as power frequency voltage test, lightning impulse voltage test, artificial pollution test and flexural load test.

  • In this paper, we report the fabrication of high quality polymer walls by using a monomer containing fluorine (F-monomer). Polymer walls with no phase retardation were fabricated by using photo-polymerization induced anisotropic phase separation of the mixture composed of liquid crystal (LC) and F-monomer. Thanks to the immiscibility of fluoride, we could form high quality polymer walls with no light leakage. We measured electro-optic characteristics of a twisted-nematic (TN) LC cell whose polymer walls were fabricated by using the F-monomer, and the measurements were compared with that fabricated by using the monomer without fluorine.

  • Optical transparency and high diffraction efficiency are two essential factors for high performance of the photopolymer. Optical transparency mainly depends on the miscibility between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer, while diffraction efficiency depends on the refractive index modulation between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer. For most of organic materials, the large refractive index difference between two polymers accompanies large structural difference that leads to the poor miscibility and thus poor optical quality via light scattering. Therefore, it is difficult to design a high-performance photopolymer satisfying both requirements. In this work, first, we prepared a new phase-stable photopolymer (PMMA) with large refractive index modulation and investigated the optical properties. Our photopolymer is based on modified poly (methyl methacrylate) as a polymer binder, acryl amide as a photopolymerizable monomer, triethanolamine as initiator, and yellow eosin as a photosensitizer at 532 nm. Diffraction efficiency over 85% and optical transmittance over 90% were obtained for the photopolymer. Second, Organic-inorganic nanocomposite films were prepared by dispersing an aromatic methacrylic monomer and a photo- initiator in organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel matrices. The film properties could be controlled by optimizing the content of an organically modified silica precursor (TSPEG) in the sol-gel matrices. The photopolymer film modified with the organic chain (TSPEG) showed high diffraction efficiency (> 90%) under an optimized condition. High diffraction efficiency could be ascribed to the fast diffusion and efficient polymerization of monomers under interference light to generate refractive index modulation. The TSPEG modified photopolymer film could be successfully used for holographic memory.

  • The patterned vertical alignment (PVA) display showed good electro-optic properties such as wide viewing angle, fast response time, high Contrast Ratio. However, the device has patterned electrode on both top and bottom electrodes which requires high accuracy of assembling of top and bottom substrates in order to exhibit a high performance. So, they have disadvantage about low yield. In order to resolve these problem, in this paper, we studied about top substrate pattern free vertical alignment device associated with surface polymer stabilization using the UV curable monomer. This method shows simple progress, low cost and good electro-optic properties such as high transmittance and fast response time.

  • A conducting polymer layer was introduced into the pore surface of mesoporous carbon via vapor infiltration of a monomer and subsequent chemical oxidative polymerization. The polypyrrole, conducting polymer has attracted considerable attention due to the high electrical conductivity and stability under ambient conditions. The mesoporous carbon-polypyrrole nanocomposite exhibited the retained porous structure, such as mesoporous carbon with a three-dimensionally connected pore system after intercalation of the polypyrrole layer. In addition, the controllable addition of pyrrole monomer can provide the mesoporous carbon-polypyrrole nanocomposites with a tunable amount of polypyrrole and texture property. The polypyrrole layer improved the electrode performance in the electrochemical double layer capacitor. This improved electrochemical performance was attributed to the high surface area, open pore system with three-dimensionally interconnected mesopores, and reversible redox behavior of the conducting polypyrrole. Furthermore, the correlation between the amount of polypyrrole and capacitance was investigated to check the effect of the polypyrrole layer on the electrochemical performance.

  • While a little research has been peformed on flexural behavior of reinforced polymer concrete (RPC)beams with the compressive strength lower than 900kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ vary little exists in conjunction with the behavior of RPC 1,000kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ or higher in compressive strength. In this paper the flexural performance of high strength polymer concrete beams with 1,450kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in compressive strength was evaluated. The unsaturated polyester resin was used to make polymer concrete as binder. The beams with stirrup singly/doubly were tested to examine the effect of tensile reinforcement ratio. As test results, reinforcement ratio increased with the increase moment strength, decreased with ultimate deflection, ductility index.

  • Effects of the polymer-binder ratio and slag content on the properties of combined wet/dry-cured polymer-modified mortars using granulated blast-furnace slag are examined. Results shows that the flexural, compressive, tensile and adhesion in tension strengths of polymer-modified mortar using the slag tend to increase with increasing slag content, and is inclined to increase with increasing polymer-binder ratio. In particular, the polymer-modified mortars with slag content of 40% provide about 20% higher tensile strength than unmodified mortars. Such high strength development is attributed to the high tensile strength of polymer and the improved bond between cement hydrates and aggregates because of the addition of polymer.

  • This study explores and selects an appropriate material that considers light and soft physical properties as well as activity for impact absorption pads that can be used to develop practical impact protective clothes worn during daily life by the elderly to reduce the impact of falls. Physical properties, impact absorption performance, and compression characteristics were evaluated on 5 types of foam, 2 types of 3D spacer fabric, and 3 types of polymer gel to select a material appropriate for the pad to be inserted into impact protective clothes. The evaluation of the physical properties showed that 3D spacer fabrics had lower density compared to other materials and polymer gels had the highest density. The elongation percentage was higher in foams than 3D spacer fabrics and EPDM foam had the highest elongation percentage. The impact absorption performance of honeycomb polymer gel was better than foams and 3D spacer fabrics. As a result of looking into compression energy and compression characteristics of materials, 'CR foam A' was found to absorb the largest amount of compression energy, 24.1%, among foams and polymer gels. A high energy absorption rate of 50.0% (or above) was indicated by 3D spacer fabrics; however, foams and polymer gels showed a progressive deformation of energy compression / recovery curve with 3D spacer fabrics that showed drastic deformation. Based on characteristics of materials, 'CR foam C' and EPDM with relatively high absorption performance can be used as protective pad materials among foams. Among polymer gels, 2 open-type polymer gels that have relatively low impact protective performance but a relatively lighter weight on human body (compared to closed-type) are considered appropriate protective pad materials.

  • Repair and strengthening is necessary to extend the service life of existing buildings. Polymer-modified cement mortar (PCM) has been extensively used as a high performance material particularly for finishing and repairing works in concrete building because of itsexcellent adhesion, waterproofing, resistance to chemical attack, and workability. As PCM contains organic polymer, it is necessary to clarify its properties at high temperature under fire, on which sufficient data are not available. This paper evaluated the burn-up characteristics of polymer-modified cement mortar with cone calorimeter test, non-combustibility test and flammability test with experimental parameters such as the types of polymer, unit-polymer content, polymer-cement ratio and thickness of the specimen.
