A Study on the Performance Characteristics of Low Pressure Hydraulic Circuit of Common Rail System (커먼레일 시스템용 저압 유압회로의 성능특성에 관한 연구)

  • High pressure common rail injection technology has revolutionized the diesel industry. Over the last decade it has allowed engine builders to run higher injection pressures as much as above 1,300bar in order to increase engine efficiency, while reducing emissions. This common rail system has low pressure circuit which is consist of low pressure pump, cascade overflow valve and flow metering unit. The low pressure pump's purpose is to feed fuel oil to the high pressure pump. The cascade overflow valve keeps pressure in front of the metering unit constant and provides lubrication for the high pressure pump. The metering unit, known as the MPROP or fuel pressure regulator, regulates the maximum flow rate delivers to the rail. In this paper, we have investigated the performance characteristics of each components and total low pressure circuit of common rail system.

  • Diesel engines have the advantages of good fuel efficiency and low emissions. Therefore, car makers have been developed various kinds of diesel engine management system to clean up emissions while improving fuel efficiency. One of them is the common rail system. In the common rail system, diesel fuel is injected into the combustion chamber at ultra high pressures up to 1,800 bar to ensure more complete combustion for cleaner exhaust gas, and highly precise multiple injection reduces NOx emission, combustion noise and vibration. Generally speaking, common rail system consists of booster pump, high pressure pump, common rail, injectors, control valves, and sensors. The high pressure pump receives low pressure fuel from the booster pump and supply high pressure fuel to injectors through the high pressure common injection rail. Therefore, high pressure pump has an important role in common rail system. In this paper, we have investigated the performance of high pressure pump of common rail system.

A Study on a High-Temperature/High-Pressure Washing System in which High-Temperature Water is Generated in a Low-Pressure Boiler and High-Pressure Water is Generated Thereafter in a Compressor (저압보일러에서 고온의 온수 생성 후 압축기에서 고압수를 생성하는 고온·고압 세척시스템에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted on a high-temperature/high-pressure washer in which low-pressure cold water in a boiler is heated to a temperature range of $70{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ by supplying diesel combustion heat. The high-temperature water is sent to a compressor to increase its pressure to 200 bar, thereby making high-temperature/high-pressure water, which is sprayed through a spray nozzle. In the results of this study, the spray temperature of the high-pressure washing was shown to be the highest when the ratio between the actual amount of combustible air and the theoretical amount of air was 1:1 and the energy consumption rate of the low-pressure boiler type high-pressure washer was shown to be much lower than that of the high-pressure boiler type high-pressure washer.

  • Super low temperature has many applications nowadays, from the chemical processing, automotives manufacturing, plastic recycling, etc. Considering of its wide application in the present and the future, study of the super-low temperature refrigeration system should be actively carried out. Super low state temperature can be achieved by using multi-stage refrigeration system. This paper present the development and testing of cascade refrigerator system for achieving super-low temperature. On this experiment, two different types of HCFCs refrigerants are utilized, R-22 and R-23 were applied for the high stage and the low-pressure stage respectively. The lowest temperature in the low-pressure evaporator that can be achieved by this cascade refrigeration system is down to $-85^{\circ}C$. This experiment is aimed to study the effect of inlet pressure of the low-pressure stage evaporator and low-pressure stage compressors inlet pressure characteristics to the overall temperature characteristics of cascade refrigeration system.

Cooling Efficiency of Low Pressure Compressed Air Fogging System in Naturally Ventilated Greenhouses (저압 에어포그 시스템을 설치한 온실의 냉방효율)

  • In order to derive the efficient utilization of low pressure compressed air fogging system, cooling efficiencies with control types were analyzed through cooling experiments in tomato greenhouses. The control types were set up with temperature control, humidity control, temperature and humidity control, and time control. It showed that the cooling effects were 0.7 to $3.3^{\circ}C$ on average and maximum of 4.3 to $7.0^{\circ}C$, the humidification effects were 3.5 to 13.5 % on average and maximum of 14.3 to 24.4 %. Both the cooling and humidification effect were the highest in the time control method. The cooling efficiency of the air fogging system was not high with 8.3 to 27.3 % on average. However, the cooling efficiency of 24.6 to 27.3 % which appears from the time control is similar to the cooling efficiency of high pressure fogging system experimented in Japan. The air fogging system is operated by low pressure, but its efficiency is similar to high pressure. We think because it uses compressed air. From this point of view, we suggest that the air fogging system can get the cooling efficiency of similar levels to that of high pressure fogging system and it will have an advantage from clogging problem of nozzle etc.

  • The closed cycle diesel system is operated in closed circuit system where there is non air breathing with working fluid consists of combination of oxygen, argon and recycled exhaust gas far obtaining underwater or underground power sources. Experimental apparatus using the MTU8V183SE92 high pressurized engine adapted for closed cycle running, capable of operating at the system pressure of maximum 5 bar is constructed with ACAP as data acquisition system in order to operate equally in the open cycle in surface or the closed cycle in submerged conditions. The general features and the characteristics of combustion of HP(high pressure) diesel engine, specially designed and manufactured only for CCDE, are investigated. The test results of performance of HP diesel engine in closed cycle system are presented with respect to power and boost pressure and compared with those of low pressure diesel engine.   • Two-stage turbocharging is an important way to raise engine power density, to realize energy saving and emission reducing. At present, turbine matching of two-stage turbocharger is based on MAP of turbine. The matching method does not take the effect of turbines' interaction into consideration, assuming that flow at high pressure turbine outlet and low pressure turbine inlet is uniform. Actually, there is swirl flow at outlet of high pressure turbine, and the swirl flow will influence performance of low pressure turbine which influencing performance of engine further. Three-dimension models of turbines with two-stage turbocharger were built in this paper. Based on the turbine models, mechanism of swirl flow at high pressure turbine outlet influencing low pressure turbine performance was studied and a two-stage radial counter-rotation turbine system was raised. Mechanisms of the influence of counter-rotation turbine system acting on low-pressure turbine were studied using simulation method. The research result proved that in condition of small turbine flow rate corresponding to engine low-speed working condition, counter-rotation turbine system can effectively decrease the influence of swirl flow at high pressure turbine outlet imposing on low pressure turbine and increases efficiency of the low-pressure turbine, furthermore increases the low-speed performance of the engine.

  • The development of eco-friendly low pressure carburizing system with high pressure gas quenching (LPC_GQ, 500kg/charge) led to new stage in the fundamental case-hardening treatments. This is due to its ability to provide tighter tolerances on the carburizing process with notable reductions in distortion of the carburized and hardened workpiece. This system is characteristics by high uniformity and reproducibility of heat treatment results, absence of an intergranular oxidation layer, carburizing of complex shapes, reduced cycle time, low operating costs, simplified production, eliminate post washing, and reduced grinding costs.

  • In hydraulic oil pump system, pressure has a linear relationship with output torque of motor. Torque control of pump drive can easily output stable pressure, and it can retain required pressure at minimum speed to save power consumption. Switched reluctance motor(SRM) has many advantages such as low cost and low inertia. It can generate high torque at low speed. But inherent high torque ripple of SRM influences performance of pressure control in hydraulic oil system. This paper presents direct instantaneous torque control(DITC) of hydraulic oil pump system. DITC method can reduce inherent torque ripple of SRM, and output smoothing torque to load. So the proposed hydraulic oil pump system can support smooth pressure and fast dynamic power supply to the hydraulic pump system. At last the proposed hydraulic oil pump system is verified by computer simulation and experimental results.

Effects of Key Operating Parameters on the Efficiency of Two Types of PEM Fuel Cell Systems (High-Pressure and Low-Pressure Operating) for Automotive Applications

  • The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system consisting of stack and balance of plant (BOP) was modeled in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. High-pressure operating (compressor type) and low-pressure operating (air blower type) fuel cell systems were con­sidered. The effects of two main operating parameters (humidity and the pressure of the supplied gas) on the power distribution characteristics of BOP and the net system efficiency of the two systems mentioned above were compared and discussed. The simulation determines an optimum condition regarding parameters such as the cathode air pressure and the relative humidity for maximum net system efficiency for the operating fuel cell systems. This study contributes to get a basic insight into the fuel cell stack and BOP component sizing. Further research using muli­object variable optimization packages and the approach developed by this study can effectively contribute to an operating strategy for the practical use of fuel cell systems for vehicles.
