  • Adaptability is the most promising feature to be applied in future robust multimedia applications. In this paper, we propose the Direct Algorithm to improve the degree of satisfaction at heterogeneous receivers in multi-layered multicast video environments. The algorithm relies on a mechanism that dynamically controls the rates of the video layers and is based on feedback control packets sent by the receivers. The algorithm also addresses scalability issues by implementing a merging procedure at intermediate nodes in order to avoid packet implosion at the source in the case of large multicast groups. The proposed scheme is optimized to achieve high global video quality and reduced bandwidth requirements. We also propose the Direct Algorithm with a virtual number of layers. The virtual layering scheme induces intermediate nodes to keep extra states of the multicast session, which reduces the video degradation for all the receivers. The results show that the proposed scheme leads to improved global video quality at heterogeneous receivers with no cost of extra bandwidth.

  • In mobile ad hoc networks, an application scenario requires mostly group mobility behavior in the mix of group moving nodes and individually moving nodes. The nodes of those applications tend to belong to the movement group with similar movement behavior. Group mobility is one of the good methods to improve scalability, and reduces the protocol overhead. In this paper, we propose the multicast architecture which regards nodes that have equal group mobility in the heterogeneous group mobility network as the single entity with the multiple interfaces and composes multicast tree, The logical cooperative entity-based multicast architecture accommodates the scalability, the multicast tree simplification, and the protocol overhead reduction which arc obtained from the hierarchical multicast architecture, while it maintains the nat multicast architecture for the data transmission. It also prevents the concentration of the energy consumption dispersing data forwarding load into the several ingress/egress nodes. Results obtained through simulations show that logical cooperative entity based multicast protocol with multiple interfaces offers the protocol scalability and the efficient data transmission.

  • In this study, the effects of grouping by extraversion and introversion in POE learning applied to elementary science class on students' achievement, the perception of learning environment and the attitude toward science instruction were investigated. Ninety-five 5th graders were assigned to the control group and the experimental groups, and taught about acid and base for 9 class hours. In the experimental groups, the homogeneous small group was composed of four introverts or four extroverts, and the heterogeneous small group was composed of two introverts and two extroverts. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the homogeneous group performed better than the control group in the application subtest of the achievement test. Significant difference in learning difficulty was found between the heterogeneous group and the control group. In the attitude toward science class, significant interaction effect was found between the instruction and the extraversion/introversion.

  • In the 4G wireless environment, one of the important issues is to discover and select an access network suited for users. In this thesis, we propose a new network selection mechanism using group decision making and evaluate the effect of network selection schemes for vertical handover in heterogeneous wireless networks. We consider the group of users with similar QoS requirements search for the available access network simultaneously and a service area consist of multiple access networks with various characteristics. We divide the access networks with similar characteristics split into a group. Between each group, the one group is selected and within that group, the best access networks will be assigned according to priority order by network selection algorithm. We evaluate and compare the performance of three representative MADM schemes: GRA, SAW and TOPSIS. The MATLAB simulation results indicate the proposed algorithm can make a more effective choice according to the networks' characteristics and user's preference.

  • An important features of next-generation wireless networks will be heterogeneous environment in which a mobile terminal will be able to connect to multiple radio access networks and network selection mechanisms play an important role in ensuring QoS for users in this environment. In this paper, our study is concerned with an extension of the well known AHP to the group decision making methods. The users requested specific QoS divide into a group and the access networks with similar characteristics split into a group. Between each group, the one group is selected and within that group, the best access networks will be assigned according to priority order by network selection algorithm. The experimental results of MATLAB simulation show that the every user in each services can select the same network with decision value as large as 0.9. Consequently, the proposed network selection mechanism is more effective than conventional one in integrated UMTS and WLAN networks.

  • In March 2020, the National Assembly revised the Framework Act on Cooperatives, allowing a federation of heterogeneous cooperatives, and in October 2020, the Daegu Gyeongbuk Federation of Local Food Cooperatives was launched as the first federation of heterogeneous cooperatives in the country. The local food movement, which has been promoted upward in the local community as an alternative to the existing global food system, seems to be being activated by the government's food plan policy, but critics say that the government's policy goals are not fully achieved due to the top-down policy promotion and lack of communication. In response, this study first examines the role and significance of the local food federation of heterogeneous cooperatives in solving the problems raised in the process of establishing a food plan. In addition, the current status of the federation was investigated for the successful settlement and development of the Daegu Gyeongbuk Federation of Local Food Cooperatives. A survey of affiliated cooperatives, focus group interviews with managers and experts and related literature surveys were conducted. Based on this, the direction of activities was presented, such as the role of an intermediary in Daegu and Gyeongbuk and the role of an intermediary in the public and private sectors etc. In addition, six joint project tasks were specifically presented, including an integrated information sharing system & a logistics network, a planned production system & a joint processing center, an online sales system & a co-marketing promotion, a joint education system, a management of direct stores & restaurants, a sustainable public-private cooperation system etc.

  • In this paper, we propose a new functionality to Scalable Video Coding (SVC), which is the support of multiple ROIs for heterogeneous display resolution. Scalable video coding is targeted at giving temporal, spatial, and quality scalability for the encoded bit stream. Region of interest (ROI) is an area that is semantically important to a particular user, especially users with heterogeneous display resolutions. The bitstream containing the ROIs could to be extracted without any transcoding operations, which may be one of way to satisfy QoS. To define multiple ROI in SVC, we adapted FMO, a tool defined in H.264, and based on it, we propose a way to encode and decode ROIs. The proposed method is implemented on the JSVM1.0 and the functionality is verified using it.

  • This study investigated the influences of group composition in cooperative computer-assisted instruction (CAI) upon students' conceptual understandings, application abilities, learning motivations, and the perceptions of involvement. Seventh graders (N=97) were selected from a co-ed middle school in Seoul, and taught about 'motion of molecules' for 5 class hours. In the two treatment groups with cooperative CAI strategy, homogeneous and heterogeneous small groups were organized by the previous science achievement. Traditional instructions were administered to the comparison group. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of the conception test for the treatment groups were significantly higher than those for the comparison group. However, there was no difference between the homogeneous and the heterogeneous groups. The scores of the three groups did not differ significantly in the application test and the learning motivation test. However, the perceptions of involvement for the treatment groups were more positive than those for the comparison group.

  • Giant platelet syndrome is a group of unique disorders characterized by the presence of abnormally large platelets, and usually accompanied by thrombocytopenia. Most cases of giant platelets are encountered in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura(ITP). In contrast, inherited giant platelet disorders, a group of heterogeneous diseases, are rare. Bernard-Soulier syndrome and its variants, and MYH9 related diseases have been defined at the molecular level. Abnormalities in transcription factors are implicated in a couple of macrothrombocytopenia syndromes. However, the molecular defects are unknown in gray platelet syndrome. It is important to make a proper diagnosis of congenital macrothrombocytopenia to avoid unnecessary medications and potentially dangerous treatment for presumed ITP.

  • Content adaptation is an effective solution to support the quality of service over multimedia services over heterogeneous environments. This paper deals with the accuracy and the real-time requirement, two important issues in making decision on content adaptation. From our previous problem formulation, we propose an optimal algorithm and a fast approximation based on the Viterbi algorithm of dynamic programming. Through extensive experiments, we show that the proposed algorithms can enable accurate adaptation decisions, and especially they can support the real-time processing.
