  • The performance of sound barriers was evaluated to determine their technical effectiveness and practicality in reducing noise exposures to operating engineers in construction. Commercially purchased sound dampening mats (SDMats) were installed inside three heavy-equipment engine compartments. Sound pressure levels (SPLs) were measured before and after installing the SDMats while the equipment was on idle and full-throttle settings where it normally operates. SPLs inside the heavy-equipment operator cabs were significantly reduced by 5.6-7.6 dBA on the full-throttle setting following installation of the SDMats (p < 0.01). The evaluated engineering control intervention was simple to install, affordable, and substantially reduced the engine noise reaching the heavy-equipment operator, potentially reducing reliance on hearing-protection devices to protect construction workers from noise exposures.

  • Inundation of substation and underground power equipment(pad-mounted transformers & switches) breaks out every summer season in low-lying downtown and low-lying shore by localized heavy rain, typhoon and tidal wave. In case inundation of substation and underground power equipment, it occurs a great economic loss owing to recovery time and events of electric shock occur by inundation electrical facility. So we search the damage situation and installation situations. Therefore we propose the necessity of protection of flood at low-lying downtown and low-tying shore. This paper will be used to present a reform proposal of electrical related law about flood protection of existing power equipment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide basic information for the establishment of a Heavy Ion Therapy center by analyzing the cases of Heavy Ion Therapy devices, introducing the equipment and space composition of Heavy Ion Therapy equipments. Methods: This study is carried out by study the Heavy Ion Therapy, by figure out status of the installation of treatment centers around the world and by analyze the composition of Heavy Ion Therapy equipments and spaces through case studies. Results: The results of this study, which investigated the treatment of Heavy Ion Therapy and analyzed the plans of the five Heavy Ion Therapy centers, are summarized as follows. 1) Heavy Ion equipment requires a significant floor area. Vertical as well, many cross-sectional areas need to be secured for the construction of a delivery system. The Heavy Ion Therapy device should be built as a shielded wall because of the radiation leaking. Therefore, it is necessary to consist of a independent treatment center. 2) The size of Heavy Ion devices is getting smaller. Linac can be put into syncrotron. and the size of syncrotron, delivery system, and rotating-gantry is getting smaller. 3) Japan is often installed for treatment, and control rooms are integrated, while Europe has secured research space and each control room is separated. Implications: People are not familiar with the Heavy Ion Therapy. And the effectiveness of the treatment is not well promoted yet. Hopefully, more attention will be paid to the research involved in the Heavy Ion Therapy.

  • The nonlinear time-domain analysis method was implemented to carry out a series of integrated simulations for a deep-water crane vessel system composed of four sub components, including a floating vessel, lifted equipment, hoisting cable and dynamic positioning (hereinafter DP) system. The analysis of the coupled dynamics consists of the crane vessel and equipment connected using the crane wire, and the DP is modeled according to the wind, wave and current conditions. The DP systems were numerically implemented using a classical PD feedback controller, and various simulations of the deepwater installation were conducted using different conditions in order to evaluate the global performance of the floating crane vessel combined with the DP system.

  • In this paper, the time-varying failure rate to consider climate effect was extracted. Even if the same kind of equipments is estimated for extracting the time-varying failure rate, the failure rates could be different depending on external effect such as climate. With the consequence, the failure rate extracted to consider the climate effect is necessary for using the failure rate on the optimal investment plan or asset management, To consider the characteristic of climate effects(Classified into 5 categories, heavy rain, thunderbolt, strong wind, tidal waves, no character), the survey of officers charging the operation of equipment in KEPCO branch office was done. With this consequence, this paper suggest the failure rate extraction method to consider the climate effect analyzed by the survey.

  • Offshore wind power can be an alternative for onshore wind power which suffers from not only civil complaints regarding to landscape damage and noise but also wind power siting due to lack of onshore site candidates. Compared to onshore wind power, offshore wind power is free from these problems considering that generally the sites are far enough from the coast. And more electricity is generated in offshore wind turbines due to abundant offshore wind resources. However high installation costs of offshore turbines could deteriorate the economical efficiency. The main cause of the high installation costs comes from a long-term lease of the heavy marine equipment and the consequential high rental cost. In this paper, the conceptual design of the support structure for offshore wind turbines will be suggested for the installation of them with less heavy marine equipment.

  • An experimental study on a subsea installation using an offshore crane was conducted. Concrete blocks, suction piles, and manifolds were considered in this study. Free decay tests were conducted to investigate the fluid characteristics of the subsea structures. The added masses of the structures were estimated. The motion response amplitudes of the subsea structures were compared for different structures and water depths. In addition, the dynamic tension transfer function of the crane wire was investigated. The root mean square values of the heave motion and the dynamic amplification factor of the wire tension were investigated in irregular waves.

  • The turnout point system is installed to separate the main rail track from other tracks in rail load stations. It is also important to set up the switch point system to change the direction of the turnout point, to lead and change the direction of tracks. The switch point system can be negatively affected by heavy snow during winter seasons which can cause critical safety problems. Furthermore, the maintenance and repair of the conventional system is prohibitively expensive due to its complexity and high probability of failure. In this paper, an efficient switch point system is proposed which simplifies the equipment structure and lowers the cost for maintenance and repair, while improving safety and performance of the rail road system.
