The Urban thermal environment is influenced and modified in many ways. One modification is brought by the anthropogenic heat generation emitted from the combustion processes and the use of energy such as industrial, domestic and traffic procedure. The anthropogenic heat generation affect an the increase of urban temperature, the well-known urban heat islands. The study on the urban thermal environment needs a great deal of the statistic data about the inner-structure of urban, the contribution of different constructions and the traffic amount on urban thermal environment in finite region. In order to overtake a quantitative analysis of effect of the anthropogenic heat, a distribution map of the urban anthropogenic heat was made using hte data of the energy consumption used at the several constructions and traffic amount of vehicles in Pusan Metropolitan. Annual mean heat flux over the 4$\textrm{km}^2$ urbanized area in Pusan is 41.5W/$m^2$, ranging from 31.4W/$m^2$ in summertime to 59.5W/$m^2$ in wintertime and maximum diurnal anthropogenic heat generation is corresponding to 10% of irradiance during summertime.
In this study, Fe-Ni slag, converter slag and dephosphorization slag generated from the steel industry, and fly ash or bottom ash from a power plant, were mixed at an appropriate mixing ratio and melted in a melting furnace in a mass-production process for glass ceramics. Then, glass-ceramic products, having a basalt composition with $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, MgO, and $Fe_2O_3$ components, were fabricated through casting and heat treatment process. Comparison was made of the samples before and after the modification of the process conditions. Glass-ceramic samples before and after the process modification were similar in chemical composition, but $Al_2O_3$ and $Na_2O$ contents were slightly higher in the samples before the modification. Before and after the process modification, it was confirmed that the sample had a melting temperature below $1250^{\circ}C$, and that pyroxene and diopside are the primary phases of the product. The crystallization temperature in the sample after modification was found to be higher than that in the sample before modification. The activation energy for crystallization was evaluated and found to be 467 kJ/mol for the sample before the process modification, and 337 kJ/mol for the sample after the process modification. The degree of crystallinity was evaluated and found to be 82 % before the process change and 87 % after the process change. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength and bending strength were evaluated and found to be excellent for the sample after process modification. In conclusion, the samples after the process modification were evaluated and found to have superior characteristics compared to those before the modification.
A second moment turbulent closure for the turbulent heat flux near a wall is developed by modification of model constants in pressure interaction term as the variables of the turbulent Reynolds number using the universal properties of turbulent heat flux near the wall. The present model shows that model constant for the wall reflection term in pressure interaction is most important in modelling of the near wall heat flux. Fully developed pipe flows with constant wall heat flux are tested to validate the proposed model. In most of calculation region, the predicted turbulent properties agree better with the experimetal data than the results from standard algebraic heat flux model which use the uniform model constants.
In a compartment fire with openings, convective heat transfer consists of natural convection from the hot bodies and forced convection by airflow through the openings. The same finite volume method that was applied to pure natural convection in part I was utilized without modification to the square cavity with two openings. The objective of this study is to investigate effects of the openings on temperature distribution. Flow patterns, temperature distribution and heat transfer were compared for different Rayleigh numbers and with and without the openings.
Nano porous, transparent silica aerogels monoliths were prepared under ambient drying (1 atm, $270^{\circ}C$) condition by the combination of sol-gel process and surface modification with subsequent heat treatment. Three kinds of solvent, n-hexane, n-heptane and xylene, were selected in the point view of low surface tension and vapor pressure in order to restrain a formation of cracks during drying. Crack-free silica aerogels with over 93 % of porosity and below $0.14g/cm^3$ of density were obtained by solvent exchange and surface modification under atmosphere condition. Optimum solvent was confirmed n-heptane among these solvents through estimation of FT-IR, TGA, BET and SEM. Modified silica aerogel exhibited a higher porosity and pore size compare to unmodified aerogels. Hydrophobicity was also controled by C-H and H-OH bonding state in the gel structure and heat treatment over $400^{\circ}C$ effects to the hydrophobicity due to oxidation of C-H radicals.
This study is focused on the effect of $Al_2Ca$ as a modifier on eutectic Si modification of A356 alloy. Microstructural observation was carried out for as-cast, as-solution treated and as-aged samples. Solution treatment and aging were performed for 2, 4, 6 and 10 hrs at $540^{\circ}C$ and $170^{\circ}C$, respectively. Although A356 alloy, which $Al_2Ca$ was added, has no significant difference in as-cast phases with normal A356 alloys, it shows much more modified eutectic Si, grain refinement and improved tensile property both in as-cast and as-heat treated conditions. TGA result shows that $Al_2Ca$ added A356 alloy has a certain improvement in oxidation resistance.
This study examined the lake effect of the Yellow Sea which was induced by the Siberian High pressure system moving over the open waters. The development mechanism of the convective cells over the ocean was studied in detail using the Weather Research and Forecasting model. Numerical experiments consist of the control experiment (CTL) and an experiment changing the yellow sea to dry land (EXP). The CTL simulation result showed distinct high area of relative vorticity, convergence and low-level atmospheric instability than that of the EXP. The result indicates that large surface vorticity and convergence induced vertical motion and low level instability over the ocean when the arctic Siberian air mass moved south over the Yellow Sea. The sensible heat flux at the sea surface gradually decreased while latent heat flux gradually increased. At the beginning stage of air mass modification, sensible heat was the main energy source for convective cell generation. However, in the later stage, latent heat became the main energy source for the development of convective cells. In conclusion, the mechanism of the west coast heavy snowfall caused by modification of the Siberian air mass over the Yellow Sea can be explained by air-sea interaction instability in the following order: (a) cyclonic vorticity caused by diabatic heating induce Ekman pumping and convergence at the surface, (b) sensible heat at the sea surface produce convection, and (c) this leads to latent heat release, and the development of convective cells. The overall process is a manifestation of air-sea interaction and enhancement of convection from positive feedback mechanism.

This paper reviews the studies on the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Although a lot of studies about the single-phase flow have been done until now, conflicting results are occasionally reported about flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, friction factor, and Nusselt number. Some studies reported the early flow transition due to relatively greater wall effect like surface roughness, but the other studies showed that the flow transition occurred at the Reynolds number of about 2300 and the early flow transition might be due to less accurate measurement of the channel geometry. Also, there have been arguments whether the conventional relation based upon continuum theory can be applied to the fluid flow and the heat transfer in microchannels without modification or not. The studies about the two-phase flow in microchannels have been mostly about investigating the flow pattern and the pressure drop in rectangular channels using two-component, two-phase flow like air/water mixture. Some studies proposed correlations to predict two-phase flow pressure drop in microchannels. They were mostly based on Lockhart-Martinelli model with modification on C-coefficient, which was dependent on channel geometry, Reynolds number, surface tension, and so on. Others investigated the characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels with respect to test parameters such as mass flux, heat flux, system pressure, and so on. The existing studies have not been fully satisfactory in providing consistent results about the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Therefore, more in-depth studies should be done for understanding the fundamentals of the transport phenomena in the microchannels and giving the basic guidelines to design the micro devices.
The laser surface modification has been reported for its functional applications for improving tribological performance, wear resistance, hardness, and corrosion property. In most of these applications, continuous wave lasers and pulsed lasers were used for surface melting, cladding, alloying. Since flexibility in processing, refinement of microstructure and controlling the surface properties, technology utilizing lasers has been used in a number of fields. Especially, femtosecond laser has great benefits compared with other lasers because its pulsed width is much shorter than characteristic time of thermal diffusion, which leads to diminish heat affected zone. Moreover, laser surface engineering has been highlighted as an effective tool for micro/nano structuring of materials in the bio application field. In this study, we applied femtosecond and nanosecond pulsed laser to treat biometals, such as Mg, Mg alloy, and NiTi alloy, by heating to improve corrosion properties and functionalize their surface controlling cell response as implantable biomedical devices.
We investigated the modification of optical response properties of titanium dioxide (TiO2) coatings on the ceramic water-purification filters by using ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The TiO2 coatings were prepared on ceramic substrate by e-beam evaporation method. These amorphous TiO2 were turned into anatase phase by heat treatment at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The doping of N atoms into the TiO2 coatings was done by using 70KeV of N+ ion implantation with the dose of $1.0{\times}1017$ ions/cm2, followed by post-irradiation heat treatment at $550^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Methylene blue test of TiO2 coatings to solar irradiation showed that the post-evaporation heated TiO2 was photocatalytic and N-doped TiO2 reacted to the visible part of solar irradiation.
