  • The notion of independence is currently a focal point in public discourses in relation to the elderly. In most countries, the promotion of independence, not the alleviation of dependence, has been addressed as a priority goal in the formulation of social policies for the elderly and the term of independence is used in policy documents as if it were unproblematic. In most cases, policy documents do not offer a clear definition of independence, but generally the term is interpreted as self-sufficiency and health. Accordingly, in order to promote independence of the elderly, concrete strategies such as employment, social activities, participation, direct payments are being introduced in many advanced countries. This study critically reviews these discourses and strategies, and attempts at developing an understanding of how independence and dependence is constructed in contemporary social policies for the elderly. It is our critical point that we explores the meaning of the independence and dependence from the perspective of the elderly. Findings of this study are as follows: The elderly participated in this study tended to construct the meaning of 'independence' as privacy, self-esteem, autonomy and freedom. They also tended to perceive and interpret, from their perspective, the 'dependence' as a natural law and process, affection among human beings, reward and fruit of their lives, social justice and social responsibility. In this sense current policies for the elderly have not fully reflected the perspective of the elderly. Therefore, it is argued what is important in policy formulations for the elderly is to make efforts to reflect the perspective of the elderly on policy-makings for the elderly in terms of independence and dependence.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify whether there are any differences in the level of exercise self-efficacy and perceived health status according to the stage of change for exercise behaviors in older adults. The subjects consisted of 231 older adults (91 male, 140 female) by convenience sampling residing in city D. The collected dates were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey HSD, and simple regression analysis by SPSS WIN 21.0 program. Moreover, all statistical significance level was set at a=.05. The study results were as follows: Analysis of variance showed that exercise self-efficacy showed significant differences according to the stage of change for exercise behaviors, and as a result of the posthoc analysis, it was found that as the stage became higher, their exercise self-efficacy became higher as well. Perceived health status showed significant differences according to the stage of change for exercise behaviors, and as a result of the posthoc analysis, it was found that as the stage became higher, their perceived health status became higher as well. Analysis of variance showed that exercise self-efficacy and perceived health status were significantly associated with the stages of exercise behavior change. This study identified that exercise self-efficacy and perceived health status were significant variables to explain a possible relationship with exercise stages of older adults. This study provides new information to influence the development of the better health promotion and exercise intervention for older adults in the community.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of medical education on the health behavior of elderly people aged 65 years or older who have the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. From 2014 community health survey data, 9042 people with hypertension and diabetes who had disease management education experience in elderly people over 65 years old were used as the final analysis data. Data were analyzed by Chi-square test and multi-variable logistic regression. The results of the study showed that the perceived rate of cardiovascular health factors was higher in the elderly living alone with disease management education (p <.001), and the probability of walking more than 3 days per week was 1.145(P = .002), not drinking at the present time was 1.212 times (p <.001), eating thinly was 1.184 times (p = .002). From the results of this study, it is required to develop the health promotion policy that reflects the importance of education by health care providers and the health information provided to the elderly living alone.

Multi variate logistic regression analysis was performed with subjective health level as a dependent variable and multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine the factors affecting euphoria and quality of life. The results of the study are as follows. In the case of recipients, medical use was lower than that of non-recipients, lower education level, female age of 75 years or older, and less stress, In case of present or past recipients, the result of non - receipt increased as the subjective health level was worse, and the non - recipient had higher euphoria and quality of life. • The purpose of this study is to analyze the industrial accidents data with survival model. EDA approach is used to explore the relationship between two variables and among three variables for the past 10 years of industrial accidents data. Survival models are also tried. Survival curve drops more rapidly for the business with fewer employees as time goes by. Industrial accidents occur more often as the total number of industrial accidents gets larger and as the number of employees gets smaller. Agriculture, fishing and forestry have a higher level of industrial accidents than construction while service industry and 'transportation·storage and telecommunication' have a fewer number of industrial accidents than construction. Korea Safety and Health Agency's and Ministry of Employment and Labor's involvement were not effective but Civilian's was. Recurrent event data analysis reveals all most the same result as for non-recurrent data analysis.

  • While traditionally threatening human infectious diseases are decreasing, chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes, including cardiovascular diseases, are spreading rapidly. Reflecting the characteristics of chronic diseases that are difficult to treat, the management of risk factors and the preparation of health promotion policies corresponding to them have emerged as important concerns around the world. Providing so-called multi-sector approach such as health promotion and disease prevention policy and solution for community response, The value of primary care is once again highlighted in the changed medical environment. As the existing medical delivery system has become difficult to cope with the people's desire for rapid aging, disease paradigm change, and quality of life improvement, European Union countries have made various efforts to improve the quality of their primary medical system, which provides continuous, com- prehensive and coordinated management. This paper examines the current status and problems of the healthcare delivery system in Korea, draws implications from the European Union examples related to the strengthening of primary care, and discusses the plans for establishing a patient-centered future medical delivery system.
