  • The most cost-effective method of reducing abrasive wear in mechanical parts is increasing their hardness with thin hard coatings. In practice, the composite hardness of the coated substrate is more important than that of the substrate or coating. After full unloading of the load applied to an indenter, its indentation hardness evaluated based on the dent created on the test piece was almost dependent on plastic deformation of the substrate. Following the first part of this study, which proposes a new Brinell hardness test method for a coated surface, the remainder of the study is focused on practical application of the method. Indentation analyses of a rigid sphere and elastic-perfect plastic materials were performed using finite element analysis software. The maximum principal stress and plastic strain distributions as well as the dent shapes according to the substrate yield stress and coating thickness were compared. The substrate yield stress had a significant effect on the dent size, which in turn determines the Brinell hardness. In particular, plastic deformation of the substrate produced dents regardless of the state of the coating layer. The hardness increase by coating behaved differently depending on the substrate yield stress, coating thickness, and indentation load. These results are expected to be useful when evaluating the composite hardness values of various coated friction surfaces.

  • Stern tube bearing is a shaft device playing important roles to reduce the friction of axial rotation and to support the weight of shaft. However, because there is no domestic producer of stern tube bering, imported stern tube bearings have many practical problems including prices, delivery and after services. This is why stern tube bearing should be localization. For the purpose of development of polyurethane resin for stern tube bearings, the effect of additives on the hardness, tensile strength and elongation of the polyurethane resin were systematically investigated. For the preliminary researches, depending on the type of curing agent, MOCA type and non-MOCA type polyurethanes were synthesized. Preliminary researches concluded that MOCA type polyurethane resin has more excellent mechanical properties than non-MPCA type for stern tube bearings that Tensile strength and Hardness of non-MOCA type investigated 23 D, 4.3 Mpa. Therefore, MOCA type polyurethane was adapted as base resin of this research. Silica, calcium carbonate and graphite were selected as additives for the enhancement of mechanical properties of polyurethane resin. Effect of the type and the dosage of these additives on the hardness, tensile strength, elongation of the polyurethane resin were experimentally examined. However, addition of calcium carbonate and graphite showed only minor effect on the hardness of the resin. Polyurethane resin with silica showed relatively excellent hardness, tensile strength and improved elongation.

  • Rearfoot control can be defined as the relative ability of a shoe to limit the amount of subtalar joint pronation immediately following footstrike. A normal amount of pronation provides a means of decreasing peak forces experienced by the leg, but excessive pronation of the foot can be arised its injures. The purpose of this study is to compare amount of pronation according to a difference between medial and later hardness of shoe midsole for better design of running shops. The experiment is examined for 7 running shoes. 8 males. to measure the Achilles tendon angle and rearfoot angle using high speed camera. The results is conducted that the changes of Achilles tendon angle significantly differ at each test shoe with increased running speed. And, a difference between medial and lateral hardness of midsole affects rearfoot motion of runner. The displacements of maximal Achilles tendon angle described a amount of pronation motion is decreased when medial hardness of midsole is large more than lateral.

  • Fe-C alloy layers were produced by pulse plating and the properties were compared with those produced by D.C. plating. When the pulse on time ($T_{on}$ ) was the same, both the duty cycle and peak current density($I_{p}$ ) had little influence on the carbon content and the hardness of the layer. The structure and hardness of the direct current plating were similar to those of the pulse current plating. However, the ductility was enhanced when the pulse current was applied due to the release of residual stress during the pulse off time($T_{off}$).).

  • Hardness characteristics and microstructures of $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites were evaluated from the variation of fabricating conditions such as preparation temperature, applied pressure and pressure holding time. $Nb/MoSi_2$ laminate composites composed of $MoSi_2$ powder and Nb sheets were fabricated by the hot press. From experimental results, it was found that the lamination from Nb sheet and $MoSi_2$ powder was an excellent strategy to improve hardness characteristics of monolithic $MoSi_2$. However, interfacial reaction products like(Nb, Mo)$SiO_2\;and\;Nb2Si_3$ formed at the interface of $Nb/MoSi_2$ and increased with fabricating temperature.

  • This paper deals with hardness and wear characteristics of ion-nitrided metal, and with ion-nitride processing which is concerned with the effects of added carbon content in gas atmosphere. A small optimal amount of carbon content in gas atmosphere increase compound layer thickness, as well as to increase diffusion layer thickness and hardness, and reduces wear rate when the applied wear load is small. It is found in the analysis that under small applied wear load, the critical depth where voids and cracks may be created and propagated is located at the compound layer, so that the abrasive wear where hardness is an important factor, is created and the existence of compound layer reduces the amount of wear. When the load becomes large, the critical depth is located below nucleation and propagation, is created and the existence of compound layer increase wear rate.

  • This study analyzed the damage to a slitting knife after cutting steel sheets. Damages to the structure were observed and wear tests were conducted. In addition, the degradation on the damaged and undamaged parts was compared with a micro Vickers hardness test. Weibull statistical analysis was carried out in order to evaluate the reliability of the micro Vickers hardness measured data. Spalling of the edge portion occurred by degradation during use over a long period. Rough parts in the specimens were caused by damage because the slitting knife was used for 1 year. The friction coefficient and wear loss at the damaged parts of the knife edge were slightly larger from shock due to repetitive cutting operation. The micro Vickers hardness followed a two-parameter Weibull probability distribution.

  • As well known, the friction stir welding is a novel welding process which is a solid state welding process for sheet or plate using the friction stir phenomenon. This paper describes the effect of welding condition such as the rotation speed and the travelling speed during the friction stir welding process on the micro Virkers hardness and the microstructure of friction stir welded joints in AI-7075-T651 plate. From those investigations, the highest hardness of stir zone was observed at the welding condition of SO-3. The microstructures of the friction stir welded joints was not dependent on the welding conditions, but in the SO-4 specimen, the friction stir welding defect like tunnel shape was found in stir zone.

  • Biological treatment of wastewater was studied with a purpose to remove TOC by the reduction of water hardness. The optimal conditions of coagulant were determined by reaction time and amount of coagulant. Experimental results indicate that the biological treatment after physico-chemical treatment was found to provide very efficient removal efficiency in the process to treat the textile wastewater, including the carbon dioxide treatment. The combined process of carbonization in the physico-chemical treatment respectively was increased the removal efficiencies of $30.0\%$ in biological treatment in comparison with exclusive biological treatment. As a result, the treatment of hardness after carbonization had the best removal efficiency of approximately $60.0\%$. The removal efficiencies in the exclusive biological treatment using Bacillus subtilis and after carbonization were increased by $38.9\%\;and\;69.0\%$ respectively. The combined Bacillus subtilis-assisted biological treatment was determined to be the most effective method to treat the textile wastewater in an economic point of view, the water quality in the wastewater treatment plays an important role.
