  • Land suitability assessments for agricultural crop production determine the suitability of an area in terms of crop yields. We employed the maximum limiting characteristic method (MLCM) and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to assess land suitability for Pears (Pyrus) in all Korean provinces (Dos). In general, suitability grades according to the MLCM were much lower than those according to the AHP. The MLCM determined that suitable areas (S1, S2, and S3) exist on 19.55% of the land, whereas 99.08% of the land was classified as suitable by the AHP. Based on information on pear farms in each Korean province in 5 years (1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, and 2007), the proportion of suitable land area according to the MLCM in each province as compared to all suitable areas was closer to the proportion of areas covered by pear farms in the 5 years in each province and also to the proportion of pear farm areas in 2007 in each province. Based on the assumption that if a province has more suitable areas for pears, more pears will be cultivated in that province, the results of the MLCM can be regarded as more accurate than those of the AHP.

  • Effects of feeding high quality roughage (timothy hay) in growing period on growth performance and carcass characteristics during 24 month (5 month from 28 month to) in twenty of Hanwoo steers were investigated. The hanwoo steers were randomly allotted to 2 treatments (10 heads/treatment) ; rice straw group (control) and timothy hay group (treatment). The final body weights of rice straw group and timothy hay group on 28 month were 667.70 kg and 681.75kg, respectively. The daily gain of total period was slightly higher in timothy hay group (0.83kg ) than in rice straw group (0.81 kg). The daily roughage intake in the growing period was tended to be higher in timothy hay group (4.27kg ) than rice straw group (3.80 kg). The carcass grades (yield grade and quality grade) and Longissimus dorsi area were significantly higher in timothy hay group ($85.62 cm^2$, 2.02 and 2.20 point) than in rice straw group ($81.29 cm^2$, 2.00 and 1.60 point respectively) (p<0.05), and were affected by the feeding with high quality roughage in the growing period.

  • The hazard maps for predicting collapse on natural slopes consist of a combination of topographic, hydrological, and geological factors. Topographic factors are extracted from DEM, including aspect, slope, curvature, and topographic index. Hydrological factors, such as soil drainage, stream-power index, and wetness index are most important factors for slope instability. However, most of the urban areas are located on the plains and it is difficult to apply the hazard map using the topography and hydrological factors. In order to evaluate the risk of subsidence of flat and low slope areas, soil depth and groundwater level data were collected and used as a factor for interpretation. In addition, the reliability of the hazard map was compared with the disaster history of the study area (Gangnam-gu and Yeouido district). In the disaster map of the disaster prevention agency, the urban area was mostly classified as the stable area and did not reflect the collapse history. Soil depth, drainage conditions and groundwater level obtained from boreholes were added as input data of hazard map, and disaster vulnerability increased at the location where the actual subsidence points. In the study area where damage occurred, the moderate and low grades of the vulnerability of previous hazard map were 12% and 88%, respectively. While, the improved map showed 2% high grade, moderate grade 29%, low grade 66% and very low grade 2%. These results were similar to actual damage.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the needs of educators, learners and parents in elementary schools for implementing a systematic nutrition education program by nutrition teachers to begin in 2006. The subjects were 833 dietitians, 808 principals, 3,141 teachers, 7,577 students and 6,003 parents in elementary schools. A fairly large proportion of the principals (98.4%), teachers (95.5%), parents (96.6%) and students (62.8%) responded that nutrition education is urgently needed. Every dietitian, principal and teacher has recognized that for the enforcement of a nutrition program in the future, the placement of one nutrition teacher in every school is needed without a moment's delay. Many subjects responded that elementary low grades are the most proper time for nutrition education for students and it is also needed to extend this not only to students, but also parents and teachers who have a direct influence on them. In the education hour, they responded that it is proper one hour a month for teachers and one hour a week for students. Fifty-six percent of dietitians, 58.3% of principals and 67.0% of teachers responded that the best educational way to heighten the effect of nutrition education was education through discretional activities. It was found that 46.4% of students have wanted nutrition education to be enforced during special activities. Education through their school homepage or in-school broadcasting system, while it has been most utilized, was low in a degree of preference with 10.9%. In regards to a nutrition program, principals and parents have attached much importance to the dining etiquette, dietary attitudes, and relations of foodstuffs with health, while dietitians and teachers have made much of a balanced eating habit, and the relations of dietary life with health. Finally, for a nutrition program to be enforced towards a direction that the educators and students want, it is judged that first of all the role of nutrition teachers is the most important, furthermore the support of manpower and the budget should be made.

  • Objective : Intracranial meningiomas are primarily benign tumors with a good prognosis. Although WHO grade II meningiomas are rare (2-10%), WHO grade II meningiomas have higher recurrence and mortality rates than benign. We evaluated the patient recurrence rate and investigated the prognostic factors of WHO grade II meningiomas. Methods : Between 1993 and 2005, 55 patients were diagnosed with WHO grade II meningiomas in our hospital. WHO grade II meningiomas (n=55) were compared with other WHO grades meningiomas (I, n=373; and III, n=20). The patients had a median age of 48.4 years (range, 14-17 years), a male-to-female ratio of 26 : 29, and a mean follow-up time of 45 months (range, 3-175 months). Results : In WHO grade II meningiomas, only the extent of resection was a significant prognostic factor. Post-operative radiotherapy had no significant influence on tumor recurrence (p=0.053). The relative risk of recurrence was significantly higher in WHO grade II meningiomas with incomplete resection (10/27, RR=37%) than in WHO grade II meningiomas with complete resection (4/28, RR=14%) regardless of post-operative radiotherapy. In the incomplete resection group, Simpson grade III or IV had a significantly high risk of recurrence regardless of post-operative RT (n=3, RR=100%) However, if the degree of resection was Simpson grade II, the recurrence rate was similar to the complete resection group even though post-operative RT was not performed. Conclusion : Complete resection was the most powerful independent predictive factor of the recurrence rate in WHO grade II meningiomas. Post-operative adjuvant RT was not a significant factor in this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data on counseling, education, and treatment related to orthodontic practices through an understanding of the relationships between orthodontic treatment, oral health-related quality of life, and happiness of high school students. The subjects in this study were 500 students in Grades 1~3 of a high school in Jeollabuk-do. We conducted a survey targeting this group; the results revealed the following: in the social support item, peer support showed significant differences in the matter of orthodontic treatment (p<0.05). In oral health-related quality of life, the students without orthodontic treatment showed 14.09 scores that were higher than the students with treatment (p<0.05). Regarding happiness, the students with orthodontic treatment showed higher scores which were significantly different from the those of the non-orthodontic treatment group (p<0.05). Additionally, upon examining the correlations between self-esteem, social support, oral health-related quality of life, and happiness, oral health-related quality of life, peer support, and happiness showed the negative (-) correlations while the rest of the variables showed the positive correlations (p<0.05). The factors having effects on oral health-related quality of life included the stress, matter of orthodontic treatment, and teachers support (p<0.05). The factors having effects on happiness included self-esteem, peer support, and family support (p<0.05). Based on the above results, even though dental orthodontic treatment had negative effects on oral health-related quality of life, it had positive effects on happiness. Consequently, it would seem necessary to seek active methods to increase oral health-related quality of life. This improvement could be achieved by minimizing inconveniences, such as mastication, in the process of dental orthodontic treatment, and developing programs that could enhance happiness.

  • The increasing price of surimi has affected the economical benefits of surimi based food industry, To maintain gel strength in low grade surimi, the optimum formulation adding functional proteins to low grade surimi is required. The objective of this study was to develop the optimum formulation of ingredients in making gels in low grade surimi on the addition of functional non-muscle proteins to low grade surmi by measuring rheological properties of the gels. The rheological qualities of the cooked gels made with A and RA grade surimi on the effects of adding five kinds of starches (potato, wheat, waxy maize, corn and modified corn) and four kinds of functional proteins (bovine plasma protein, dehydrated egg white, soy protein isolate and whey protein concentrate) to the gels were evaluated, The gel styengths at cooking with A and RA grade surimi were decreased with increasing the added starches. The kind of starches added affected little the gel strengths in Rh grade surimi, while potato and corn starches decreased at the least in gel strengths of the gel made with A grade surimi with increasing the concentration of starches. The bovine plasma protein (BPP) significantly increased the gel strength, especially in RA grade surimi, but BPP decreased the whiteness of the gel. Therefore, the optimum content of BPP was up to $2\%$ because of the whiteness of the gels in RA grade surimi, The optimum formulation for the gel with RA grade surimi to satisfy the gel strength of 1000$\times$g and $78\%$ moisture was $40.9\%$ surimi, $9.1\%$ dehydrated egg white (DEW) and $0.9\%$ starch, while that with A grade surimi under the same condition was $37.9\%$ surimi, $6.6\%$ DEW and $3,4\%$ starch.
