  • In this study, the basic concept of design response spectrum is briefly revi-ewed. To generate the artificial earthquake acceleration, the method of superpo-sition of cosine waves is used. Theoretical developments using F.F.T. and spect-ral density function are compared. The amplitude was derived by use of the peak factor and the phase angle is d-erived by use of Monte Carlo simulation. To smoothen the match, the calculated pseudo velocity respon-se spectrum is compared with input pseudo velocity response spectrum at a set of control frequencies. With the modified spectral density function, a new acceleration and pseudo velocity response spectrum are generat-ed.

  • This study introduces a method to generate artificial earthquakes in Korean Peninsular using historical earthquake catalogues and point source model. For this purpose, three earthquake catalogues compiled by different researchers are compared to each other. And epicenters and magnitudes of future earthquakes are generated based on those catalogues. In generating ground motion accelertation, point source model proposed by Boore and Atkinson was adopted. Parameters of the model for South-Eastern part of Korean Peninsular was proposed by Noh and kn. From the epicenters, magnitudes, and ground motion models, possible earthquakes for 50,000 years are generated. Using these generated earthquakes ground accelrations and uniform hazard response spectra (UHRS) having 2%, 5%, and 10% exceedance probability in 50 years are proposed.

  • Since the importance of seismic design is greater, dynamic analysis is more widely using than past. The input motion is one of the most important factors of dynamic analysis. However, in Korea input motions are selected from U.S. and Japan those are captured from large magnitude earthquakes without considering seismic environment or generated in frequency domain. In this research, the methodology for generating input motions those are considered seismic environment and design code is proposed. The seismic environment compatibility is considered by performing deaggregation and the design code compatibility is considered by time-domain artificial time history accelration generation method. The results shows that seismic environment and design code compatible input motions are successfully generated.

  • The generation of artificial accelerograms considering the characteristic of earthquakes in the Korean peninsula for a time history analysis of structures is accomplised by the stochastic method. The engineering data such as a representative shape of envelope function and an effective duration are investigated from the instrumental records. The maximum ground acceleration value is based on seismic zoning map which are constructed for the Korean peninsula. The acceleration-time histories are generated for two different types of earthquake motions and two types of soil conditions. In the study, the maximum ground acceleration value of 0.2 g and effective durations of 24 seconds are used. The validity of the artificial accelerograms is obtained by the comparison with the required envelope functions and the design response spectrum.

  • The vibration of fungal cultures was evaluated to determine its potential effect on the dispersal of airborne fungal microorganisms suspected of being pathogens. An artificial vibration system, which simulates the actual environmental vibration of fungal structures, was designed and constructed for this purpose. Experiments featured the use of low-frequency vibrations similar to those induced by earthquakes. Within the range of conditions tested, the vibration of fungal cultures was found to affect the airflow-driven generation of bioaerosols.

  • An algorithm to enhance spectra matching of acceleration time history used in the seismic analysis of nuclear power plants(NPP) is proposed. The new scheme provides the solution on the highly fluctuating and over conservatism problems that happened in order to satisfy design spectrum enveloping criteria in the traditional method. To obtain optimized spectrum for a time history, a spectrum matching procedure that adapts a system identification technique is also developed. The algorithm also introduces maximum displacement control, baseline correction, clipping and raising of maximum peak of time history, and power spectral density (PSD) control of time history. It is verified through numerical examples that this new scheme can definitely generate acceleration time history, closely matching the target spectra and satisfying other stipulated requirements.

  • Due to the severe impacts of recent earthquakes, the use of seismic isolation is paramount for the safety of nuclear structures. The diversity observed in seismic events demands ongoing research to analyze the devastating attributes involved, and hence to enhance the sustainability of base-isolated nuclear power plants. This study reports the seismic performance of a seismically-isolated nuclear reactor containment building (NRCB) under strong short-period ground motions (SPGMs) and long-period ground motions (LPGMs). The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission-based design response spectrum for the seismic design of nuclear power plants is stipulated as the reference spectrum for ground motion selection. Within the period range(s) of interest, the spectral matching of selected records with the target spectrum is ensured using the spectral-compatibility approach. NRC-compliant SPGMs and LPGMs from the mega-thrust Tohoku earthquake are used to obtain the structural response of the base-isolated NRCB. To account for the lack of earthquakes in low-to-moderate seismicity zones and the gap in the artificial synthesis of long-period records, wavelet-decomposition based autoregressive moving average modeling for artificial generation of real ground motions is performed. Based on analysis results from real and simulated SPGMs versus LPGMs, the performance of NRCBs is discussed with suggestions for future research and seismic provisions.

  • The domestic and foreign seismic design codes have specified that time history covers design response spectrum when the response spectrum, which calculated from the time history, is smaller than the design response spectrum at five points or less. In order to verify the design codes, time history analysis for a pier was performed by using five artificial time histories conforming design code with various characteristics and its member forces were evaluated according to them. It was confirmed from analysis results that, regardless of the conformity to design code requirement, seismic design using the artificial time histories could not guarantee earthquake resistant design if the response spectrum from them is lower than design response spectrum at the similar period to the natural frequency of structure. Thus, the time history generating method to make its acceleration response spectrum to be greater than design response spectrum at all period was proposed by two modification function in this study. It was also verified whether time histories from the proposed method satisfy the seismic design codes or not.
