  • Fixtures such as bushings in terminations of high temperature superconducting(HTS) power cable systems are subjected to high voltages, which have to transition from ambient to cryogenic temperatures. As such it is imperative to ensure the integrity of the dielectrics under all operating conditions, including thermal aspects brought about by the passage of current. Gaseous helium(GHe) at high pressure is regarded as a potential coolant for superconducting cables. The dielectric aspects of cryogenic helium gas are both complex and demanding. In this experimental study we looked at the interface between a smooth epoxy surface and high pressure helium gas in a homogeneous electric field. The alternating current(AC) flashover voltages of epoxy samples are presented. The results have been analyzed by using Weibull statistics. In addition to the behavior of the epoxy in gaseous helium as a function of pressure and temperature we also present data of the characteristics of the epoxy in mineral oil and in liquid nitrogen($LN_2$). The breakdown characteristics of a uniform field gap in gaseous helium as a function of pressure and temperature under AC, direct current(DC) and lightning impulse voltages are also given. Electric field calculations have been made for one of the experimental geometries in an attempt to explain some of the anomalies in the experimental results.

  • The thermodynamic instability of bubbles in wet-foam colloidal suspension is due to the substantial area of their gas/liquid interface. Several physical processes lead to gas diffusion from smaller to larger bubbles, resulting in a coarsening and Ostwald ripening of wet foam. This includes a narrowing of the bubble size distribution. The distribution and microstructure of porous ceramics, the adsorption free energy and Laplace pressure of $Al_2O_3$ particle-stabilized colloidal suspension, and $SiO_2$ content were investigated for tailoring the bubble size. Wet-foam stability of more than 80% is related to the degree of hydrophobicity with contact angles of $62-70^{\circ}$ achieved from the surfactant. The contact angle replaces part of the highly energetic interface and lowers the free energy of the system. This leads to an apparent increase in the surface tension (26-33 mN/m) of the colloidal suspension.

  • Recently mini-channels or micro-channels are widely used for cooling the high density power electronic devices. Especially, the channels are used in small and high efficient equipments such as heat pipes and heat exchangers. Interfacial velocities between liquid and gas phases are very important in mini or micro-channels. In this paper, an experiment and a numerical analysis on the interfacial velocities were performed. In the experiment, the interfacial velocities which were measured by the high-speed CCD camera were about $26{\sim}33$ cm/s and the velocities increased as the inclination angle did. In the numerical experiment, CFD-ACE+, a commercial program, was used, the velocities had similar values with experimental results. As the inclination angle and the contact angle increased, the interfacial velocities did because of the surface tension which causes to move the interface. The effect of inclination angle was larger in the converging channels than in straight channels.

  • The reaction rate of $CO_2$ with 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), MEA monoethanolamine(MEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) in aqueous solutions has been determined using a stirred vessel with a plane gas-liquid interface over a wide range of concentrations of amines at different temperatures. The results show that the overall reaction rate is first order with respect to both $CO_2$ and amine. The reaction rate constant varies with temperature according to the relationship which agrees with the experimental data. The proposed interpretation is that the kinetic rate determining step is a reaction of $CO_2$ with amine to form carbamic acid which is then totally and immediately ionized.

  • The operating temperature of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) usually has to be limited under $100^{\circ}C$ to maintain the proper ionic conductivity. Therefore, the only product from reaction, water, is in the liquid phase. Two-phase flow makes the flow phenomenon in the channel difficult to understand and predict. Water blocking in the PEMFC channel or the pore of Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL), called flooding, is known as the main effect of PEMFC degradation. To analyze two-phase flow, the PEMFC with transparent acrylic plate was used. Two-phase flow patterns were observed by varying the current density. When the PEMFC is mounted horizontally, water in the cathode is mainly transported on the interface between the channel and GDL.

  • Using a SQUID magnetometer, the diamagnetic susceptibility of NaCl aqueous solution was measured with high accuracy in a magnetic field of up to 6 Tat 25$\pm0.05^{\circ}C$. The NaCl concentrations adopted in this experiment were 0 (water), 7.5, 15, 23, 26.2, 26.6 and 100% (crystal) with the concentration error of $\pm$0.04%. Experimental data was compared with the calculated value of susceptibility derived from dependence of the vapor pressure on NaCl concentration As a result, our measured value was almost in accordance with the calculated value. It was found that the diamagnetic susceptibility shows a decrease of approximately 10% within the saturated concentration (26.2%) and that the susceptibility is one of the effective cause for the concentration dependence in the gas-liquid interface deformation of the NaCl solution.

  • Bubble rising phenomenon is widely founded in many industrial applications such as a stream generator in power plant. Many experimental and numerical researches have been already performed to predict dynamic behavior of the bubble rising process. Recently numerical approaches are getting popular since it can offer much detailed information which is almost impossible to obtain from the experiments. Rising bubble could penetrate through the top free surface which makes the problem much more complicate in addition to the phase changing effect even with latest numerical techniques. In this paper, the top free surface effect on rising bubble has been investigated. The gas-liquid interface was explicitly tracked using high-order Level Contour Reconstruction Method(LCRM) which is a hybridization of Front-Tracking and Level-Set method. Break-up behavior of rising bubble at free surface showed different characteristics with initial diameter of bubble.

  • This describes a numerical method for predicting the incompressible unsteady laminar three-dimensional flows of fluid behaviour with free-surface. The elliptic differential equations governing the flows have been linearized by means of finite-difference approximations, and the resulting equations have been solved via a fully-implicit iterative method. The free-surface is defined by the motion of a set of marker particles and interface behaviour was investigated by way of a 'Lagrangian' technique. Using the GALA concept of Spalding, the conventional mass continuity equation is modified to form a volumetric or bulk-continuity equation. The use of this bulk-continuity relation allows the hydrodynamic variables to be computed over the entire flow domain including both liquid and gas regions. Thus, the free-surface boundary conditions are imposed implicitly and the problem formulation is greatly simplified. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the predicted results of a periodic standing waves problems with analytic solutions or experimental results from the literature. The results show that this numerical method produces accurate and physically realistic predictions of three-dimensional free-surface flows.

  • The Cu-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using of gas-atomized metallic glass powders and ductile brass powders. No defect such as pores and cavities was observed at the interface between the brass powder and the metallic glass matrix, suggesting that the SPS process caused a severe viscous flow of the metallic glass and brass phases in the supercooled liquid region, resulting in a full densification. The BMG composites shows some macroscopic plasticity after yielding, although the levels of strength decreased.

  • It was verified at Part Ⅰ of this investigation that there is a minimum wettability between molten iron and graphite, which was preliminarily coated with magnesium, and thus the spheroidization of graphite might have resulted from the lack of wettability between magnesium-adsorbed graphite and iron matrix. Being continued from the last work, the wettability between pure iron and graphite, coated with the various thickness of cerium, are measured at melting point of pure iron in vacuum and 200 mmHg argon gas atmosphere. The result indicates the presence of a minimum wettability at a critical thickness of cerium film as was proved in the case of magnesium. The experimental analysis shows that, the minimum wettability could be attributed entirely to a minimum work of adhesion between liquid iron and graphite at a critical concentration of cerium in the iron-graphite interface.
