  • Intertidal community recovery and resilience were investigated with quantitative and qualitative perspectives as a function of disturbance timing. The study was conducted in a lower intertidal rock bed of the southern coast of South Korea. Six replicates of artificial disturbance of a $50cm{\times}50cm$ area were made by clearing all visible organisms on the rocky substrate in four seasons. Each of the seasonally cleared plots was monitored until the percent cover data reached the control plot level. There was a significant difference among disturbance timing during the recovery process in terms of speed and community components. After disturbances occurred, Ulva pertusa selectively preoccupied empty spaces quickly (in 2-4 months) and strongly (50-90%) in all plots except for the summer plots where non-Ulva species dominated throughout the recovery period. U. pertusa acted as a very important biological variable that determined the quantitative and qualitative recovery capability of a community. The qualitative recovery of communities was rapid in summer plots where U. pertusa did not recruit and the community recovery rate was the lowest in winter plots where U. pertusa was highly recruited with a long duration of distribution. In this study, U. pertusa was a pioneer species while being a dominant species and acted as a clearly negative element in the process of qualitative recovery after disturbance. However, the negative effect of U. pertusa did not occur in summer plots, indicating that disturbance timing should be considered as a parameter in understanding intertidal community resilience in temperate regions with four distinct seasons.

  • The purposes of this study are to quantify energy expenditure by measuring oxygen consumption while performing occupational therapy activities most commonly used for adult hemiplegia patients, to recommend a optimal dosage of exercise by comparing energy expenditure according to the recovery stage, and to suggest a precaution in the treatment of patients with cardiac disorders. According to Brunnstrom recovery stages in hand function, subjects were allocated to group I(3rd and 4th Brunnstrom recovery stages) and group II(5th and 6th Brunnstrom recovery stages). Outcome measures included oxygen consumption, energy expenditure rate, and heart rate during each activity and in recovery period after the activity. Occupational activities including sanding activity, putty activity, and skateboard activity were carried out for all patients. In sanding and putty activities, there were significant differences of oxygen consumption and energy expenditure during the activity between groupⅠandⅡ(p<0.05), but there were not significant differences of oxygen consumption, energy expenditure and heart rate in the recovery period(p>0.05). In skateboard activity, there were no significant differences in oxygen consumption, energy expenditure and heart rates between the two groups during the activity and in the recovery period(p>0.05). The findings indicates that cardiovascular demands for basic activities usually peformed for a treatment may be depended on the physical recovery of patients with hemiplegia. Therefore, therapeutic activities for patients should be selected with the great care.

  • Obesity is known as the most common risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Weight loss is needed to prevent liver function damage from progressing to non-alcoholic hepatosteatosis (NASH) and NASH-related liver cirrhosis. The purpose of this study was to observe the recovery of liver function in obese patients with liver dysfunction through traditional Korean obesity treatment. Body weight, liver function levels and renal function levels were examined by prescribing traditional Korean medicine in obese patients with mild elevation of liver function test. Blood tests were conducted at intervals of one month, and it was observed that liver function recovered to the normal range in three patients.

  • As Mobile Internet gets more popular, the switchover of E-Commerce to M-Commerce gets faster and many service providers offer diverse M-Commerce service by using mobile technology. Also, as M-Commerce makes rapid progress, the security protocol gets more widely recognized for its significance. In particular, WAKE(Wireless Authentication and Key Establishment) protocol carried out wirelessly is of great importance, since the user and service provider must get through to carry out the M-Commerce. Key recovery method is a part of the key management in order to provide an emergency recovery of key whenever necessary, like when the user lost the key or the cryptosystem was illegally used. The ASPeCT project first tried to support the key recovery function in WAKE Protocol Since then, a variety of WAKE Key Recovery protocols have been proposed. In this thesis, problems of WAKE Key Recovery protocols proposed so far are analyzed and new WAKE Key Recovery protocol is suggested to solve those problems.

  • Clay suspensions in liquid polymers exhibit a time-dependent behaviour that includes viscoelastic as well as thixotropic features. Because of the presence of interacting clay platelets, particulate networks can develop, which are broken down during flow and rebuild upon cessation of the flow. Here, the use of thixotropic techniques in probing flow-induced structures in nanocomposites is explored with data on a hectorite-poly(isobutylene) model system. By means of fast stress jump measurements the hydrodynamic contributions to the steady state stresses are determined as well as those caused by the stretching of the clay floes. Flow reversal measurements do not provide a clear indication of flow-induced anisotropy in the present case. The recovery of the clay microstructure upon cessation of flow is followed by means of overshoot and dynamic measurements. The development of a particulate network is detected by the appearance and growth of a low frequency plateau of the storage moduli. The modulus-frequency curves after various rest times collapse onto universal master curves, regardless of the pre-shear history or temperature. The scaling factors for this master curve are the crossover parameters. The crossover moduli are nearly a linear function of the crossover frequency, the relation being identical for recovery after shearing at different shear rates. This function depends, however, on temperature.

  • Effects of aqua-acupuncture with soshiho-tang at Kansu(BL_{18}$) and Tamsu(BL_{19}$) on the Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase(GOT), Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase(GPT), Lactic dehydrogenase(LDH) and blood pictures in rat with $CCI_4$ were determined. In the group with $CCI_4$ the activity of GOT, GPT and LDH showed a tendency to increase, however these values showed a tendency to decrease by the aqua-acupuncture with soshiho-tang throughout experimental days and these values were recovered to those of control group on the last experimental days. Counts of RBC and Hemoglobin showed a tendency to decrease in rat with $CCI_4$, however these decreased values were recovered by the aqua-acupuncture with soshiho-tang and on the last experimental days, these values were similar to those of control group. In the $CCI_4$ group, counts of WBC and the proportion of Lymphocytes showed a tendency to increase and the proportion of Neutrophils showed a tendency to decrease, however these values showed a rapid recovery by the aqua-acupuncture with soshiho-tang. In the meridian point of Kansu and Tamsu, the effects of aqua-acupuncture with soshiho-tang on recovery of liver function showed no difference. Results from this study indicate that the aqua-acupuncture with soshiho-tang can improve the liver function in rat with $CCI_4$.

  • This research was performed to investigate protective effect of Sophora Subprostrata fractions against focal ischemic brain damage after middle cerebral artery(MCA) occlusion. Rats were divided into six groups: MCA-occluded group(Control); each administered groups with Sophora Subprostrata total phase(Total), Sophora Subprostrata Aqueous phase (Aqueous), Sophora Subprostrata BuOH phase(BuOH), and Sophora Subprostrata Alkaloid phase(Alkaloid) after MCA-occlusion; sham-operated group(Sham). The right MCA was occluded by A poly-L-lysine coated 4-0 nylon suture thread through the internal carotid artery permanently. Sophora Subprostrata and fractions were administered orally(5mg/ml) for 7 days after MCA-occlusion. The behavior of ischemic rats were examined at 24 hours, 3, 5 and 7 days after MCA-occlusion from the views of 4 different aspects: posture & balance tests(4 subtests), reflex tests(6 subtests), muscle-tone tests(3 subtests), and foot-fault test. The results showed that 1) in muscle tone test, Sophora Subprostrata total phase only increased reduced muscle tone function from 3 to 7 days, 2) in reflex test, Sophora Subprostrata total and Aqueous phase increased fast recovery from 24 hours and 3 days, 3) in posture & balance test, Sophora Subprostrata total and Aqueous phase increased fast recovery from 24 hours, and Sophora Subprostrata BuOH and Alkaloid phase increased posture & balance function from 3 days, but 4) in motor function test, Sophora Subprostrata did not show effective recovery compared with control group. In conclusion, Sophora Subprostrata has protective effects against brain damage at the early stage of focal cerebral ischemia. Sophora Subprostrata total and Aqueous phase produced more pronounced protective effect against focal ischemic brain damage.
