Feed-forward neural networks have been widely used as function approximation tools in the context of global approximate optimization. In the present study, a wavelet neural network (WNN) which is based on wavelet transform theory is suggested as an alternative to a traditional back-propagation neural network (BPN). The basic theory of wavelet neural network is briefly described, and approximation performance is tested using a nonlinear multimodal function and a composite rotor blade analysis problem. Laplacian of Gaussian function, Mexican function, and Morlet function are considered during the construction of WNN architectures. In addition, approximation results from WNN are compared with those from BPN.
The focus in this paper is on obtaining tight, simple algebraic-form bounds and invertible expressions for the average symbol error probability (ASEP) of M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) in a class of composite fading channels. We employ the mixture gamma (MG) distribution to approximate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distributions of fading models, which include Nakagami-m, Generalized-K ($K_G$), and Nakagami-lognormal fading as specific examples. Our approach involves using the tight upper and lower bounds that we recently derived on the Gaussian Q-function, which can easily be averaged over the general MG distribution. First, algebraic-form upper bounds are derived on the ASEP of MPSK for M > 2, based on the union upper bound on the symbol error probability (SEP) of MPSK in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) given by a single Gaussian Q-function. By comparison with the exact ASEP results obtained by numerical integration, we show that these upper bounds are extremely tight for all SNR values of practical interest. These bounds can be employed as accurate approximations that are invertible for high SNR. For the special case of binary phase shift keying (BPSK) (M = 2), where the exact SEP in the AWGN channel is given as one Gaussian Q-function, upper and lower bounds on the exact ASEP are obtained. The bounds can be made arbitrarily tight by adjusting the parameters in our Gaussian bounds. The average of the upper and lower bounds gives a very accurate approximation of the exact ASEP. Moreover, the arbitrarily accurate approximations for all three of the fading models we consider become invertible for reasonably high SNR.
The purpose of the present study is the presentation of the appropriate element and shape function in the solution of the neutron diffusion equation in two-dimensional (2D) geometries. To this end, the multigroup neutron diffusion equation is solved using the Galerkin finite element method in both rectangular and hexagonal reactor cores. The spatial discretization of the equation is performed using unstructured triangular and quadrilateral finite elements. Calculations are performed using both linear and quadratic approximations of shape function in the Galerkin finite element method, based on which results are compared. Using the power iteration method, the neutron flux distributions with the corresponding eigenvalue are obtained. The results are then validated against the valid results for IAEA-2D and BIBLIS-2D benchmark problems. To investigate the dependency of the results to the type and number of the elements, and shape function order, a sensitivity analysis of the calculations to the mentioned parameters is performed. It is shown that the triangular elements and second order of the shape function in each element give the best results in comparison to the other states.
Function approximation is one of the most important and active research fields in design optimization. Accurate function approximations can reduce the repetitive computational effort fur system analysis. So this study presents an enhanced two-point diagonal quadratic approximation method. The proposed method is based on the Two-point Diagonal Quadratic Approximation method. But unlike TDQA, the suggested method has two quadratic terms, the diagonal term and the correction term. Therefore this method overcomes the disadvantage of TDQA when the derivatives of two design points are same signed values. And in the proposed method, both the approximate function and derivative values at two design points are equal to the exact counterparts whether the signs of derivatives at two design points are the same or not. Several numerical examples are presented to show the merits of the proposed method compared to the other forms used in the literature.
It is shown that there exists a nonlinear mappping which transforms features and their changes to the desired camera motion without measurement of the relative distance between the camera and the part, and the nonlinear mapping can eliminate several difficulties encountered when using the inverse of the feature Jacobian as in the usual feature-based visual feedback controls. And instead of analytically deriving the closed form of such a nonlinear mapping, a fuzzy membership function (FMF) based neural network is then proposed to approximate the nonlinear mapping, where the structure of proposed networks is similar to that of radial basis function neural network which is known to be very useful in function approximations. The proposed FMF network is trained to be capable of tracking moving parts in the whole work space along the line of sight. For the effective implementation of proposed IMF networks, an image feature selection processing is investigated, and required fuzzy membership functions are designed. Finally, several numerical examples are illustrated to show the validities of our proposed visual servoing method.
The dynamic modulation transfer function (MTF) for image degradation caused by sinusoidal vibration is formulated based on a Bessel function of the first kind. The presented method makes it possible to obtain an analytical MTF expression derived for arbitrary frequency sinusoidal vibration. The error obtained by the use of finite order sum approximations instead of infinite sums is investigated in detail. Dynamic MTF exhibits a stronger random behavior for low frequency vibration than high frequency vibration. The calculated MTFs agree well with the measured MTFs with the slant edge method in imaging experiments. With the proposed formula, allowable amplitudes of any frequency vibration are easily calculated. This is practical for the analysis and design of the line-of-sight stabilization system in the remote sensing camera.

This paper aims to present a new method for obtaining an analytical solution for the Kaniadakis Doppler broadening (KDB) function. Also, in this work, we report the computational efficiencies of this solution compared with the numerical one. The solution of the differential equation achieved in this paper is free of approximations and is, consequently, a more robust methodology for obtaining an analytical representation of ψk. Moreover, the results show an improvement in efficiency using the analytical approximation, indicating that it may be helpful in different applications that require the calculation of the deformed Doppler broadening function.

Entropy is the basic concept of information theory. It is well defined for random varibles with known probability density function(pdf). For given data with unknown pdf, entropy should be estimated. Usually, estimation of entropy is based on the approximations. In this paper, we consider a kernel based approximation and compare it to the cumulant approximation method for several distributions. Monte carlo simulation for various sample size is conducted.
