To obtain the basic data for the conservation and cultivation of major native herb species under the trees, distribution of native herb species, and corrrlations between native herb species and site factors were studied on natural broadleaved forest in Mt. Gariwang and Mt. Jungwang, Pyeunchang-gun. 136 native herb species were distributed in studied area, and the importance percentage of Pseudostellaria heterophylla was proved the highest, 10.8%. The other major herb species were the following oders, Meehania urticifolia, Corydalis remota, Pimpinella brachycarpa, Carex siderosticta, Pseudostellaria palibiniana, Erythronium japonicum, Ligularia fischeri, Asarum heterotropoides var. mandshuricum, Hylomecon vernalis and Astilbe rubra var. rubra. Highly positive correlations were proved Hepatica asiatica and Ainsliaea acerifolia, Pimpinella brachycarpa and Aconitum jaluense subsp. jaluense, Aconitum jaluense subsp. jaluense and Smilacina japonica var. japonica, Meehania urticifolia and Pseudostellaria palibiniana. Seven groups of native herb species were divided by cluster analysis. Preferring site factors for each native herb species were determined. Ligularia fischeri, Ainsliaea acerifolia, Parasenecio auriculata var. matsumurana, Erythronium japonicum and Pimpinella brachycarpa were distributed mainly on the higher sites, Ligularia fischeri were ditributed more frequently in deep soil sites. These results might be useful measures in the conservation and cultivation of native edible and medicinal herb species on the forest floor in the natual broadleaved forest, Pyeungchang-gun.
Community structure and soil properties of larch forest which are used for breeding site by herons were studied at Apgogri, Hoengsung, Kangwon Province. This site has been protected as a Natural Monument(No. 248) from 1973, in Korea. Herons have used this habitat from February to October every year. In 1995, more than 700 herons were observed in this habitat. Most of the larches died due to group breeding of herons, and no larch saplings were found at forest floor. Nutrient contents of soil in this habitat were much higher than those in control plot(non-breeding site). This must be due to the addition of faeces from herons and of thin twigs and other organic materials from the canopy and bird nests. Species composition of herb layer in this habitat was quite different from that in control plot. Breeding site was dominated by Humulus japonicus, Persicaria fauriei, Persicaria perfoliata, Commelina communis, Chelidonium majus var. asiaticum, Digitaria sanguinalis, Bidens bipinnata. Dioscorea batatas which are indicator species of soil eutrophication. Similarity index of shrub and herb layer between the breeding site and control site was 0.36 and 0.07, respectively.
This research was carried out to evaluate and raise the energy efficiency of wood frame house. The commercial solution program CE3 (Construction Energy Efficiency Evaluation) was used for simulating the energy consumption in the single-family wood frame house. The results showed that the annual heating energy demand of the house was 160 kWh per 1 $m^2$ floor area. In order to decrease the heating energy demand, the following energy efficiency methods were applied to the simulation : a) simplification of building shape, b) decrease of windows area, c) application of high performance windows (with low thermal transmittance) and d) application of heat recovery ventilator. In case of replacement of the windows with high performance one with thermal transmittance 1 $W/m^2{\cdot}K$, the lowest heating demand of 80 $kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ was obtained. The best combination of methods, application of high performance windows and heat recovery ventilator, showed heating energy demand 34.5 $kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$.

The productive structure and the productivity of ${\times}$Populus albaglandulosa plantations, where are middle parts of the Korean peninsula, were studied by means of stratifying clip technique and of allometry. The densities of stands in the sample areas were 693 trees/ha in 6 year-old plantation and 527 or 625 trees/ha in 9 year-old one. The photosynthetic part of the productive structure was not shown normal conical form but layering. So this was efficient to transmit solar radiation into the stand floor. The standing crop of the terrestrial parts of 6 year-old plantation was 18.11 ton/ha and that of 9 year-old one 38.8 to 47.3 ton/ha. The wood volume to trunk to 6 year-old was $31.3m^3/ha$ and that of 9 year-old was 68.8 to $83.9m^3/ha$. The annual net production of 6 year-old plantation was 4.8 ton/ha/year and that of 9 year-old one was 10.0 to 11.7 ton/ha/year and its wood volume of trunks was 17.9 to $21.1m^3/ha/year$. In the 9 year-old plantation the standing crop or the annual net production was different between two sample areas. This seemed that the cause was not due to chemical character but to physical character of soil.

To compare the fungal distribution of matsutake-producing (Tricholoma matsutake) stand with that of non-producing stand, mushrooms on forest floor were collected in September of 1984 from 28-year-old non-producing and 55-year-old matsutake-producing stands of Pinus densiflora in Kangwon Province. A total of 18 fungal species in 12 genera were collected from a non-producing stand, and all the species except one were putative ectomycorrhizal. Common genera in non-producing stand included Suillus, Russula, Lactarius, Hydnum, and Amanita. From a matsutake-producing stand a total of 30 fungal species in 22 genera were collected, of which 22 species were ectomycorrhizal. Common genera in the producing stand included Hydnum, Tricholoma, Laccaria, and Cantharellus. Common species in both stands were six species only. It is concluded that matsutake-producing stand had more diversified fungal population than non-producing stand, probably because of higher contents of organic matters in soil and better development of understory vegetation through the ageing of the stand.
The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics of vegetation structure, vegetation succession, and species diversity of artificially planted Chamaecyparis obtusa (CO) stands. The study was carried out by performing vegetation survey for eight CO stands located in Jeollanam-do Province, Korea. Analysis on vegetation classification and ordinations of the stands was conducted using the data from the vegetation survey, and as a result, the stands were classified into five types of communities. Community I showed a considerably lower index of species diversity when compared to other communities because the canopy of the dominant CO was so highly dense that the low-height vegetation was not able to develop or the low-height vegetation almost disappeared due to elimination of weed trees. Meanwhile, the Community II - IV had relatively higher indices of species diversity because various native tree species mixed with the low-height vegetation and competed with each other in the understory and shrub layers to some degree of stability or in their early stage of vegetation development. Community V, lastly, showed higher use intensity as a recreational forest, thus developing simpler vegetation structure on account of artificial intervention. There was positive correlation between photosynthetically active radiation entering the forest floor, number of observed species and index of species diversity. Such characteristics of vegetation structure in CO stands are closely associated with forest management and prescription for planting reforestation, thinning, and brush cutting in the past. There was a slight difference in vegetation structure and species diversity by communities, based on rotation time of the vegetational succession, process of disturbance frequency and disturbance, development, and maturity by planting CO stands. However, when compared to natural forests, the CO stands showed simpler vegetation structure. Because artificial forests are vulnerable in ecosystem service with lower species diversity, a drive for ecological management is needed for such forests to change into healthy ecosystems that can display functions of public benefit.
Forest fires often destory forests that have taken years to grow in a few minutes. Forest fire therefore, is an important problem in forest management and have caused heavy losses to the nations economy. In order to resolve this problem many investigations have been made in many countries. However, ecological studies on the forest after accidental fire have not yet been made in Korea. In order to conduct such a study, a burned area on Mt. Samak which is located at Dukduwon-ri, Seo-myon, Chunsung-gun, Kangwon-do, was chosen as experimental plot in 1967. The remaining seeds were collected from the burned area, and investigations on their germination rate and their productivity were made comparing to those of the seeds of undemaged area, and following results were obtained. 1. The number of seed collected from the control plots were 740 while it was 537 from the test plots (Table 3, 4). It was considered that this difference between burned and unburned area was mainly due to the fact that some of the seeds had been burnt by the fire, and the unfavorable environmental conditions in the burned area was also considered to be a reason. In the germination rate in the control plots showed 28.1% while it was 3.2% in the test plots. This difference was considered to be due to complete loss of viability of the seed by burning and high heat. 2. In the test plots, sixteen seeds of the Alnus japonica were collected and six of these seeds germinated (index number 100) which was the highest germination rate among the species of collected seeds. From these results, it was considered that a high temperature (above $150^{\circ}C$) caused reduction of the germination rate (Quadrat. 1.2). Seeds of Carex lanceolata var. Nana, were appeared much more in the higher plots than in the lower plots and it seemed to be due to the fact that the forest floor plants were much more abundant in the lower plots than in the higher plots which is covered with shrubbery. And some small seeds midght be able to avoid the effect of fire being burried in the soil or under the gravel. 3. With Pinus densiflora, 43 seeds were collected, and 11 of these germinated in the control plots. However in the test plots, 11 seeds were collected and no seed germinated. This shows that the Pinus densiflora was the weakest in resisting to heat among the observed species in this study. 4. Without exception the germination rate showed a higher index in the herbs than in the woody plants and it is believed that the herbs produced more seed than the wood plants because of the abundance of herbs colony.
The bryophyte communities on the forest floor of the mixed coniferous, deciduous broad-leaf forest and the evergreen coniferous forest of cool temperate and subalpine zones in Chiri Mountains with the highest peak (Cheonwangbong 1915 m) in south-central part of the Korean Peninsula were investigated from the phytosociology viewpoint. As a result, five bryophyte communities were recognized, considering the species composition of vascular vegetation; A. Sasamorpha borealis-Abies koreana/Dicranum scoparium-Plagiothecium silvaticum community, B. Bosta minor-Abies koreana/Anomodon rugelii-Plagiomnium cuspidatum community, C. Abies koreana/Hylocomiopsis ovicarpa-Entodon rubicundus community, D. Abies koreana-Picea jezoensis/Hylocomiopsis ovicarpa-Thuidium kanedae community, E. Abies koreana-Pieea jezoensis/Hylocomium splendens-Pleurozium sehreberi community. Among these, the communities A, B, C and D were distributed in the mixed coniferous and deciduous broad-leaf forest of lower altitudes (1200 to 1700 m) and characterized by the elements of the cool temperate zone. They were confimled as synusies belonging to the Fraxino-Abietetum koreanae Song 1988. The community E was distributed in higher altitudes (1700 m to near the summit) and characterized by the species group of the holarctic elements, e.g. Hyloeomium splendens, Pleurozium sehreberi, Dieranum majus, etc. limited in subarctic; subalpine and arctic; alpine zones. The community E was confirmed as a synusie of the Abieti koreanae-Piceetum jezoensis Song 1991 belonging the Vaecinio-Pieeetea Br.-BI. 1939. Up to date many investigator have described the coniferous forest distibuted above 1200 m in Chiri mountauns as the forest vegetation of subalpine zone. However, from the results of the present study, the boundary of the mixed forest and the true subalpine coniferous forest was elucidated to be ca. 1700 m phytosociologically. Species richness was highest in the community E, and the other four communities showed a similar species richness. Among the species diversity indices, H' and D were high in the communities Band E, low in the communities A and C, and medium in the community D. The values of J' decreased with the increase in altitudes and the community E showed the lowest value. The result of Bray-Curtis ordination revealed that the diversity analysis and the division of the above two forest zones are justifiable. The taxa of the bryophyte communities were composed of 25 families, 46 genera, 73 species, 1 subspecies and 2 varieties.

Purpose: In this study, earthquake-induced landslide risk assessment was conducted to provide basic data for efficient and preemptive damage prevention by selecting the erosion control work before the earthquake and the prediction and restoration priorities of the damaged area after the earthquake. Method: The study analyzed the previous studies abroad to examine the evaluation methodology and to derive the evaluation factors, and examine the utilization of the landslide hazard map currently used in Korea. In addition, the earthquake-induced landslide hazard map was also established on a pilot basis based on the fault zone and epicenter of Pohang using seismic attenuation. Result: The earthquake-induced landslide risk assessment study showed that China ranked 44%, Italy 16%, the U.S. 15%, Japan 10%, and Taiwan 8%. As for the evaluation method, the statistical model was the most common at 59%, and the physical model was found at 23%. The factors frequently used in the statistical model were altitude, distance from the fault, gradient, slope aspect, country rock, and topographic curvature. Since Korea's landslide hazard map reflects topography, geology, and forest floor conditions, it has been shown that it is reasonable to evaluate the risk of earthquake-induced landslides using it. As a result of evaluating the risk of landslides based on the fault zone and epicenter in the Pohang area, the risk grade was changed to reflect the impact of the earthquake. Conclusion: It is effective to use the landslide hazard map to evaluate the risk of earthquake-induced landslides at the regional scale. The risk map based on the fault zone is effective when used in the selection of a target site for preventive erosion control work to prevent damage from earthquake-induced landslides. In addition, the risk map based on the epicenter can be used for efficient follow-up management in order to prioritize damage prevention measures, such as to investigate the current status of landslide damage after an earthquake, or to restore the damaged area.
Nitrification potential bioassay and terpenoid analyses were performed to determine the roles of terpenoid as an inhibitor of nitrification in the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forests. The effect of terpenoids in the forest floor was also tested by adding $10{\mu}g/ml$ of four terpenoids(${\alpha}-pinene,{\beta}-pinene,{\gamma}-terpinene, and terpinolene) to mineral soils. The amount of terpenoids in the litter was higher than that in the soil and varied over time, but the amount of terpenoids in the soils was relatively constant. The correlation between the amount of terpenoids in the litter and ammonium oxidation was in inverse proportion to that in the mineral layers $(r^2=0.678)$. Inhibition of ammonium oxidation by terpenoids in the litter was always higher than in the mineral layer, but nitrite oxidation was different from the ammonium oxidation. The fact that there was greater nitrate production from ammonium in the mineral layer than in the forest floor layer seems to be due to the less amounts of terpenoids in the mineral layer. The result of the experiment in which four terpenoids were added to the mineral layer suggests that, after some lag time, the four terpenoids were effective in inhibiting ammonium oxidation. However, nitrite oxidation did not appear to be affected by the four terpenoids. Accordingly, all of our results suggested that terpenoids in Douglas fir forests apparently would act as a part of the inhibitors of nitrification.
