  • With the intention to solve environmental problems caused by synthetic plastics from petroleum resources, biodegradable polyurethane foams and thermosetting moldings were prepared from biomass, such as wood and wheat bran by liquefaction method. Biodegradability of these biomass-based polymeric materials was investigated. In activated sludge, polyurethane foams from liquefied wheat bran and thermosetting molding from phenolated wood were decomposed approximately 14% and 29% for 20 days, respectively. One of the wood fungi, Coriolus versicolor was able to grow without supplemental nutrition, only with distilled water and polyurethane foam as a nutrition source. Risk assessments were also conducted and results showed that estrogenicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity were not observed in the extractives of biomass- based polymeric materials.

  • Investigation of flora was performed from March to October of 2008 as Eastern and Western coastal districts located in the same latitude ($36^{\circ}47^{\prime}-37^{\circ}48^{\prime}$), in order to apply this to basic data for effective protection and management of coastal forests also for insurance of biodiversity in coastal forests. As a result of the investigation of floras, both coastal forests recorded product-plants as follows: 98 families, 262 genera, 370 species, 46 varieties, 4 forms, 1 hybrid, 421 taxa in total. The Eastern coastal forests had 85 families, 188 genus, 248 species, 32 varieties, 3 forms, 1 hybrid, 285 taxa in total, whereas Western coastal forest had 96 families, 227 genus, 306 species, 39 varieties, 2 forms, 1 hybrid, 348 taxa in total. Among them, seashore plants accounted for 10.2% of total plants appeared in both coastal, and they are 26 families, 38 genus, 40 species, 3 hybrids and 43 taxa in total. There are special Korea plants in both coastal; 9 families, 9 genus, 8 species, 1 varieties, 1 hybrid, 10 taxa in total. There are rare plants in both coastal; 8 families, 8 genus, 7 species, 1 varieties, 8 taxa in total. Naturalized plants are also existed; 11 families, 24 species, 1 variety, 30 taxa in total.

  • There are remarkable differences in growth and morphological characters of roots between mountain and field cultivated Panax ginseng. Growth of root in mountain cultivated ginseng was much slower than that of field cultivated ginseng. However, the factor affecting the retarded growth in mountain ginseng was not known. Soil analysis revealed that phosphorus (P) content of mountain soil was exceptionally low at least ten-fold lower compared to that of field soil. Thus, we suggest that low availability of P in mountain soil may be one of the limiting factors for growth of ginseng in mountain soil environment. We had monitored the growth of ginseng plants after one and three years of phosphate fertilizer application. Three kinds of phosphate fertilizers: fused magnesium phosphate, fused superphosphate, and single superphosphate were applied to mountain soil. Application of phosphate fertilizers increased the fresh-, dry weight, and diameter of ginseng roots and resulted in increased P accumulation in roots. These results demonstrate that slow growth of ginseng in mountain soil environment might be attributed to the low P content in mountain soil. Thus, analysis of P amount in mountain soil will be a good indicator for the selection of suitable site the ginseng cultivation in forest.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest objective basic data for Kung-dong neighborhood park management through the quantitative analysis of user's behaviors and satisfaction in Chungnam National University campus forest. Most users lived in Kung-dong, Oun-dong, Shinsung-dong near the campus forest. Their visiting motivations were for taking a walk, health and fresh air. Therefore, it is important that the university should seek a supervision for improving functions of the campus forest. They are using about 300 users per day in campus forest. We should present a supervision programs which make them more useful and protective.

  • Lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) were prepared using a two-step deep eutectic solvent (DES) and enzymatic pretreatment followed by mechanical defibrillation, and we examined the effects of enzymatic pretreatment conditions on different characteristics of the LCNFs thus obtained. The LCNFs yielded using the two-step DES pretreatment (Enz-LCNF) exhibited a well-defibrillated entangled web-like structure with an average fiber diameter ranging from 15.7 to 20.4 nm. Furthermore, we found that the average diameter and filtration time of the Enz-LCNFs decreased with an increase in enzyme concentration and enzymatic treatment time, whereas we detected a concomitant reduction in the tensile strength of the Enz-LCNF sheets. The Enz-LCNFs were characterized by a typical cellulose I structure, thereby indicating that the enzymatic treatment causes very little damage to the crystalline form.

  • Alnus japonica is indigenous to korea and usually grows in wet lowlands and damp regions in the mountains. Oregonin, is known as a representative compound of the diarylheptanoid mainly found in Alnus species and has been reported to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In this experiment, we conducted a study on the presence of orogonin in the native Alnus japonica from the Baekdudaegan mountain range in Korea. We collected a total of 30 samples from Chuncheon, Yangyang, and Jeongseon and conducted experiments. In the HPLC analysis, we confirmed that oregonin was detected in all samples. After the quantitative analysis, samples with the highest content from each region were selected and LC-MS/MS experiments were performed. As a result, the same molecular weight as oregonin, 477.2 m/z, was confirmed in all samples.
