The fungus Botrytis cinerea causes fruit rot of strawberry and the damages can result in harvest losses upto 50%. Proper timing of fungicide application is essential for successful control of Botrytis fruit rot, fenhexamid plus iminoctadine tris, cyprodinil plus fludioxonil, fludioxonil alone, and Bacillus subtilis QST713 were applied to individual buds, flowers, and green and red fruit of cultivar 'Seolhyang' ex vivo. Cyprodinil plus fludioxonil or fludioxonil alone was applied i) before and after a 5-hr period of low-temperature ($0^{\circ}C$) incubation ex vivo ii) in field trials. Strawberry flowers and red fruit were more susceptible to B. cinerea than the green fruits. Incidence of Botrytis rot with fenhexamid plus iminoctadine tris and cyprodinil plus fludioxonil was the lowest at flowering, whereas B. subtilis QST713 did not significantly among treatments. In 2010, incidence of Botrytis fruit rot was significantly reduced when fludioxonil was applied two times at 1 week intervals from 50% bloom in field trials. Cultivars Redpearl and Seolhyang were more susceptible to low-temperature than cvs. Maehyang and Akihime. Cyprodinil plus fludioxonil application was effective when applied before onset of the low-temperature treatment period. Fludioxonil showed the most effective when it was sprayed one and more than two times in before and post low-temperature condition, respectively. These results demonstrate that fungicide selection and timing can interact with stage of fruit development and low-temperature in determining effectiveness of suppression of Botrytis fruit rot.
The major morphological characteristics of 97 lines selected from 1,510 local collection lines of Paeonia spp. were studied and classified into some groups according to their Q correlation. The Coefficient of Variation of 8 characteristics in 97 lines varied greatly with the range from 21.3% to 127.1%. The 22 lines with useful morphological characteristics selected from 97 lines had 2n=10 chromosomes, in which there were no difference among the number of chromosomes of 22 lines. The 97 lines were classified into 14 groups based upon the results of Q correlation analysis obtained from data with 16 quantitative factors; Group III and group VI were divided into two sub-groups. Group I was large flowered lines with a single flower, Group IIIa, doubled flowered lines, Group VII, late maturing lines and Group IX, early maturing lines flowering in 17th May. Group VIII were dwarf type lines which has the shortest stem length and leaf length among 14 groups, which are suitable for potted plants. Group XIII had a lot of stems per plant and a large type leaf with leaf length and width. A needle-type leaf was found in Group X, whereas a wide and oval-type leaf in group XII.

In this study, we examined inhibition of adipocyte differentiation associated with the administration of camphor, a substance identified in extracts of the flowering plant Chrysanthemum indicum L. (CI). No camphor-mediated cytotoxicity was observed over a period of 1-10 days in studies targeting cells of the 3T3-L1 adipocyte-like line. Experiments that featured siRNA-mediated suppression of the transmembrane proteins Patched (PTCH) and Smoothened (SMO) resulted in inhibition and activation of differentiation, respectively. Interestingly, inhibition of PTCH typically activates SMO protein targeting and serves to activate hedgehog (HH)-mediated signaling. The results of our study suggest that activation of HH-mediated signaling can inhibit adipocyte differentiation. Furthermore, expression of glioma-associated oncogene homologue 1 (Gli1) was detected by flow cytometry in 62.7±1.5% of cells in response to administration of Lactobacillus rhamnosus (KCTC 3237) and in 60.4±2.2% of cells in response to camphor; these levels are higher than those detected in undifferentiated controls (24.9±3.1%). No change in the state of fermented camphor was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), but a 15.41% quantitative increase was confirmed in KCTC 3237. Overall, we conclude that administration of camphor resulted in overexpression of SMO and modulated the differential expression of Gli1. Animal studies focused on the impact of camphor as an agent to counteract obesity might be considered in the future. Indeed, camphor and similar physiologically active compounds from fermented CI might be developed as new and effective treatments for obesity.
Seasonal occurrence of the stink bug Piezodorus hybneri (Gmelin) (Heteroptera: Penta-tomidae) was monitored at a soybean field and the campus of Gyeongsang National University, Gyeongnam. Korea, in which host plants are less available for the bug with aggregation pheromone traps of Riptortus clavatus Thunberg (Heteroptera: Alydidae) in 2004. At soybean field, P. hybneri began to be attracted to traps from June 28, earlier than flowering stage of soybean plants. Number of P. hybneri attracted increased sharply after October 11. At the campus the bugs were not attracted to traps from March 21 to October 5, but began to be attracted since October 11. Difference in the occurrences in the two sites may suggest that the stink bug immigrates actively into soybean field to find host plant. P. hybneri that had been attracted to traps since October 11 was assumed to be diapausing adults emigrating to hibernation sites. There was no difference between sexes in trap catches. The fact that P. hybneri was attracted from June to late November may suggest that the aggregation pheromone of R. clavatus was attractive to both non-diapausing and diapausing adults of P. hybneri. The aggregation pheromone traps, when baited with 16.7+16.7+16.7 mg or 7+36+7 mg of (E)-2-hexenyl (Z)-3-hexenoate, (E)-2-hexenyl (E)-2-hexenoate, and myristyl isobutyrate, attracted significantly higher number of both sexes of P. hybneri adults than the live male traps baited with ten R. clavatus males and hexane control.

The objective of this study was to examine the growth reaction of strawberry plants to the mixed red and blue LED sources and their installation method. The artificial light sources were : LED PAR(PPFD $2{\sim}4{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$), LED BAR(PPFD $100{\sim}120{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) and incandescent(PPFD $2{\sim}4{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) lamp. The lighting treatment was started at the first cluster flowering period as a night breaking lighting and was applied during 3 hours, between 22:00 and 01:00 every day. Plant height and leafstalk length were longer in plants treated with incandescent lamp, where as fresh and dry weight of shoot were heavier in LED PAR compared to incandescent lamp treatment. LED PAR treatment also resulted in the largest leaf area, chlorophyll content was increased by $0.36mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ after 60 days from the starting of the artificial lighting. According to the experimental results application of 16W LED PAR lamps and W-type installation method can improve light environment in strawberry lighting culture.
This trial was conducted for the selection of drought registance strains and other main characters of orchard grass. Some preliminary results obtained are as follows : 1. The initial growth of orchard grass in sufficient soil moisture condition showed highly significant differences among the varieties. Turkey's D=0.84. However, in proceeding the growth, the grass height among the varieties showed non-significant. 2. Addition of nitrogen fertilizer before first flowering tended to increase the grass height occationally significantly, compared to the control. 3. The survived varieties on the drought soil moisture condition had more numbers of tillering than the wilted significantly except some varieties. However, in grass height between the survival and the wilted, almost varieties showed non-significant differences. 4. In the varierties of Metia, Phyllox and Dorise, all individuals were survived in drought soil moisture condition and showed almost the same growth responces with willted ones comparatively. The plant height and the numbers of tillering of these 3 varieties were as follows: Merita; 26.4 cm 24.2 ea, Phyllox; 31.4 cm 24.6 ea. Dorise; 26.8 cm 35.6 ea.
Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) is a flowering ornamental plant used widely in Korea. In 2015, wilting, damping-off, stunting, and root rot symptoms were observed in lisianthus plants of Yeoju and Gimhae, Korea. Affected seedlings appeared yellow and showed poor development of root systems in the field and in nursery boxes. Furthermore, affected plants were yellow, stunted, and died at approximately 2-3 months after transplanting. Fusarium species were consistently isolated from the basal stems of diseased plants. Nine isolates were identified as Fusarium solani based on morphological characteristics. Macroconidia of isolates were relatively wide, straight-to-slightly curved, and microconidia formed in false heads on long monophialides. Abundant chlamydospores were produced at the middle or tips of hyphae. To confirm this identification, a molecular analysis of the translation elongation factor 1 alpha (TEF) and RNA polymerase II subunit (RPB2) genes was conducted. The sequences of TEF and RPB2 showed 99.2-99.9% and 98.0-98.1% similarity, respectively, to those of reference F. solani strains in NCBI GenBank. Pathogenicity was tested using root dipping inoculation of healthy lisianthus seedlings. Symptoms were observed within 7 days of inoculation only in inoculated plants. This is the first report of F. solani causing Fusarium root rot on lisianthus in Korea.
Cordgrass (Spartina spp.) is recognized as a highly invasive plant in estuaries throughout the world because of remarkable versatility and resiliency, significant reproduction, strong adaptability, rapid spreading, and vigorous growth. In this review, therefore, to provide insights on the effective management practices, the previous research works were summarized and discussed. Spartina spp. is a perennial halophyte, warm-season (C4) grass that reproduces both sexually through seeds and asexually by rhizomes. Management strategies for cordgrass have included various physical, biological, and chemical controls. Herbicides are usually the most cost-effective means of control. Currently, glyphosate, imazapyr, fluazifop and haloxyfop have been practically used. To improve the control efficacy, a combination of two more than methods (example, mowing-spraying) is needed to be applied consistently every year for at least 3 to 4 years and to be sprayed with enough dry time (>4-6 hr) at an early growth stage (before flowering). Consistently repeated application of same herbicide have to be avoided to prevent an unexpected emergence of herbicide-resistant lines. On the other hand, Spartina spp. have many positive functions for agricultural and eco-engineering purposes. Thus, we have to give more intensive research for effectively managing advantages and disadvantages of Spartina plantations.

Eelgrass, Zostera marina is a marine flowering plant that grows in submerged habitats for most of its lifetime, and experiences desiccation stress when exposed to air. Although the desiccation stress observed in adult eelgrass has been frequently studied, there has been little research on desiccation stress in eelgrass seeds. To survey desiccation stress in eelgrass seeds, we studied the germination rate and moisture content upon desiccation caused by exposure to air. The germination rate of the eelgrass seeds exposed to air for 1 hour at $20^{\circ}C$ and 50% relative humidity decreased markedly, and it decreased consistently as the exposure time increased. Eelgrass seeds exposed to air for longer than 11 hours did not germinate. As the exposure time of eelgrass seeds to air increased, the germination rate and moisture content decreased, showing a negative correlation. In addition, eelgrass seeds exposed to air at $30^{\circ}C$ showed significantly lower germination rates than those exposed to air at $10^{\circ}C$ or $20^{\circ}C$. Our results revealed that desiccation causes a decrease in the germination of eelgrass seeds, which will provide useful information for eelgrass habitat restoration using seeds.

This study was conducted to determine the response of main growth characters, yield and chemical composition of Jeju native soybean based on the difference between phosphate rates (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250kg/ha) from May 11 to September 10 in 2002 in Jeju island. Days to flowering was delayed from 92 days to 97 days as the increasing of phosphate rate. Also plant height grew longer from 109cm to 124cm. The number of branches and leaves, stem diameter, root length and weight of root grew powerful as phosphate rate increased from 0 to 250kg/ha. Fresh forage yield was 26.5MT/ha in the nonphosphate plot and then was 36.9MT/ha as phosphate rate increased to 250kg/ha. And the difference between 200kg/ha and 250kg/ha in phosphate rate was not significant. Dry matter, crude protein and TDN yield increased 6.0∼7.9MT/ha, 0.9∼1.4MT/ha and 3.4∼4.9MT/ha respectively, as the increasing of phosphate rate. Also crude protein, crude fat, NFE and TDN content increased 15.5∼18.3%, 2.2∼3.3%, 42.5∼43.5%, and 56.7∼61.9% respectively. In contrast with this, crude fiber and crude ash decreased 32.1∼28.1% and 7.7∼6.8% respectively. To reach the climax of forage yield was estimated optimum phosphate rate to be 200kg/ha.
