Objectives : Before Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, Kidney was widely accepted as Five Viscera, there had been several former types of Viscera system in pre-Western Han era. Above them, the Five Viscera system consisted of Liver, Heart, Stomach, Lung, Kidney was not yet hardly studied. So we tried to prove it's existence and tried to find it's historical context. Material and Methods : Via preceding research analysis, 6 books were selected as research material, and some other pre-Eastern Han dynasty classics were also analyzed. Results : We found direct evidence of above Five Viscera system in Zhuixingxun (墜形訓) in Huainanzi (淮南子), Wusemaizhen (五色脈診), and Western Han dynasty lacquer figure with meridian-points (excavated in Laoguanshan, Chengdu, China). Other clues showing existence of above Five Viscera system was also found in Yinyangshiyimaijiujing (陰陽十一脈灸經), Pianquecanggongliechuan (扁鵲倉公列傳). The rising of above Five Viscera system was related to physiological viewpoint transition of viscera in Western Han dynasty. Conclusions : In Western Han dynasty there was another Viscera System consisted of Liver, Heart, Stomach, Lung, Kidney.
Five phase theory has significant effect on Traditional Chinese Medicine, which puts its emphasis on correlation and integrity. However, the five phase theory itself has a limitation that it cannot reflect the general correlation and special features of affairs. Traditional Chinese Medicine pertains the five organs to five elements, absorbing the essence of the five phase theory, and transcending the limitation of the five phase theory in practice. Therefore, Traditional Chinese Medicine and other traditional medicine theories can be called as "five viscera correlation theory". On the course of modernization of traditional medicine, the effects among the five viscera can be concluded to 3 correlations of promotion, coordination and inhibition, to illustrate the integrity and correlation theory of traditional medicine from different approaches.
Objectives : The aim of this study is to regulate the medical meaning about Kwan [self-denial] which is used by Jeongkyeok [reinforcing the weak body part] and Seungkyeok [consolidating the weak body part while inducing cathartic action of comparatively stronger body part] of Saam Acupuncture in common. Methods : This study generalized the method of understanding 'The Five Viscera Interaction' in Oriental Medicine from the perspective of literature and considering human organs in the medical context. Results and Conclusions : 1. There existed 'The Five Viscera Interaction' theory regulating the correlation between the five viscera headed by "Nankyeong" in the traditional Oriental medicine. The five viscera interaction theory was used as the standard of judging the symptom and the prognosis of a disease in the history of Oriental medicine and further used even as the method of preventing and treating diseases. 2. The treatment included in "Biyebaekyobang", a medical book in the period of Goryeo, can be rated as the most developmental form of medical theory which applied 'the five viscera interaction theory' to clinical treatment. The author of "Biyebaekyobang" managed to break away from the schematism of the five viscera interaction through the method of treating two internal organs using one organ treatment and applying the individually different relations between organs. "Biyebaekyobang" shows close similarities to Saam Acupuncture. 3. The organs handled in Saam Acupuncture has a significance in that it put forward the part which had not been aggressively dealt with in medical history up until then.

Fragrance(aroma) have many effects on body. Recently, aromatherapy was used to treat dementia, atopicdermatitis, alopecia areata, perineal disease, lymphatichydrops, and articularrheumatism. And people are interested in physical and mental effects of aroma, especially in mental. People empirically have been known the effects of aroma on soul and used aroma in life from long ago. They have had a meditation and had a sacrificial rites burning incense. Scholars also burned incense when reading books or tasting tea. Until now, there is no physiological study about recognition process and effects of aroma on body, but only many clinical studies using aromatherapy. Fragrance(aroma) is different from smell and good flavors of herbs. And it goes through nose and has effects on body in harmony on So-mun(素問). Also flavors of herbs are spreaded ki of herbs and have many effects on body. Aroma coming through the nose is recognized by co-operation of five-viscera(五臟), especially heart and lung. The nose and pectoral qi(宗氣) are related with lung. The lung opens into the nose, reflect its physiological and pathological conditions. Pectoral qi(宗氣) is the combination of the essential qi derived from food with the air inhaled, stored in the chest, and serving as the dynamic force of blood circulation, respiration, voice, and bodily movements. Because of the heart-spirit(心神), Heart is the organ can recognize the aroma, although the nose is the first organ of receiving aroma. Five spirits(五神: ethereal soul(魂), spirit(神), ideation(意), corporeal soul(魄), will(志)) and seven emotions(七情: joy(喜), anger(怒), anxiety(憂), thought(思), sorrow(悲), fear(恐), fright(驚)) are rerated with five-viscera(五臟) and essence-spirit (精神) processing steps and express of emotions. And aroma effects on five-viscera(五臟). So aroma have many effects on body, especially mentally.

Objectives : With Taoist medicine, there is a way of improving one's health by adopting a unique discipline called 'Five viscera spirit meditation'. The method was reintroduced in traditional Korean medicine when it was finalized. The viscera figures in the Uibang-yuchwi is one of the good examples in which the photos influenced by the five viscera spirit meditation appeared in medical literature. This research is aimed to study the process and the result of how medical knowledge influenced the formation of the five viscera spirit meditation, an important health theory of Taoist medicine, and how Korean medicine was affected by Taoist medicine. Methods : We will compare and study the information included in the following publications: the Taipingjing from the Dong-Han Period when the concepts of five viscera spirit were conceived; the huangtingjing from the Wei-Jin-Nan-Bei-Chao Period when the five viscera spirit meditation was finalized; the Yuanshenjing, the Yuzhoujing and the Buxietu based on Taoist medicine; and the Uibang-yuchwi based on traditional Korean medicine. Results & Conclusions : SThe medical knowledge at the initial stage made its way into Taoist medicine, forming the foundation of health theories and contributing to the creation of the five viscera spirit meditation. After some exchanges of medical knowledge and practices between Taoist medicine and other existing medicines, the five viscera spirit meditation reappeared in medical literature in the form of drawings and was used to cure diseases.
Objective : The objective of this study is to verify the characteristics of acupuncture methods of Joseon Dynasty by looking into the relationship between five viscera diagnosis and acupuncture methods. Material & Method : In the process, I've reviewed the relationship between meridian/exterior and viscera/bowels, along with a thorough comparison of the academic tendency in acupuncture of Ming-China, Qing-China and Joseon. Result & Conclusion : The two fields of meridian and exterior, and viscera and bowels had been theoretically merged, and based upon that, foundation methods applying the five viscera diagnosis were designed. Joseon acupuncture exceeded the existing concept of viscera which simply related itself to the exterior meridian and exterior by integrating the concepts from the visceral manifestation theory. With this, large proportions of medicine related to the visceral manifestation theory were invited into acupuncture, expanding therapeutic boundaries for acupuncture treatment. A historical review on medical texts starts from the Hyangyakjipseongbang("鄕藥集成方") which familiarized the public with mainstream acupuncture knowledge up until the Song dynasty, followed by Uibangyuchwi("醫方類聚"), which sparked up interest on the acupuncture methods based on viscera and bowels. Donguibogam("東醫寶鑑") organized the medical theories up until then, building a foundation upon which viscera/bowel-based acupuncture was able to develop further. In Chimgugyeongheombang("鍼灸經驗方"), viscera/bowel-based acupuncture methods started to blossom, integrating the meridian and exterior theory with the viscera manifestation theory, which in turn provided various methods through five viscera diagnosis. In the Saamdoin acupuncture method(舍岩道人鍼法), diagnostic criteria moved on to the five viscera diagnosis, and new methods resulting from the inter-complimentary and inter-prohibiting relationships between the five phases were introduced, opening a new world of acupuncture.

The formative procedure of five-viscera has been explained for the restriction[相克; 己勝] and the reverse restriction[相侮, 勝己] in five phase theory on the medical literatures from ancient times. In the formative procedure of five-viscera, it would seem that two theories are mutually contradictory. But this problem is solved in the view: As the upward, downward movement and the circulation progress, five-viscera and five-bowels develop. In brief on the formative procedure of human viscera and bowels, first, the circulation of five-viscera and five-bowels forms three phase of upper-middle-lower(fire-earth-water), and these phases generate Triple energizers[Samcho, 三焦], consequently it is to be five-viscera and six-bowels, to be formed 'Meridian and collateral[Gyeongnak, 經絡]' in that order. The triple energizers is situated in middle stage of formation of 'Vicera' and 'Meridian and collateral' on developing stage. It would be thought that Triple energizer meridian[Susoyangsamchogyeong, 手少陽三焦經] is formed in procedure of Meridian and collateral after formation of upper-middle-lower of the triple energizers.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to understand conspicuous features of geroderma with visceral manifestation theory(臟象論). Methods : We categorized skin aging into wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dry skin and face flush. After investigating the reason, histological changes and mechanism of each classification in western medicine, we interpreted them according to the malfunction of five viscera(五臟) in Korean medicine. Result : The results are as follows. 1. Pathologic change of dermis and subcutaneous fat makes wrinkles. We consider wrinkles as the malfunction of the spleen(脾). 2. Irregular synthesis and disproportion of melanin makes hyperpigmentation. We consider hyperpigmentation as the malfunction of the liver(肝). 3. Dry skin is attributed to a subtle disorder of epidermal maturation. We consider dry skin as the malfunction of the lung(肺). 4. Facial flush is detected in rosacea and menopausal hot flush, which are both related with blood vessel abnormality. We consider facial flush as the malfunction of the heart(心) Conclusion : We interpreted the pathologic changes and mechanism of skin aging in western medicine as the decrease of five viscera(五臟) in visceral manifestation theory(臟象論) of Korean medicine. Further studies are needed to apply these hypothesis to clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Background and purpose: Maek Kyoung(脈經) is a book written, compiled, and edited by Wang Hui circa 3 A.D. This book is the first technical book devoted to the diagnostics. These are very important data but never make a special study and translate. so I hope this treatise can be great help to understand diagnosis study. Methods: Maek Kyoung(脈經) consists of ten volumes, and the third volume consists of the five chapters, including inter-generation and inter-restriction of the five viscera and the six entrails and prognosis of diseases. This treatise is made up of principal, notes, study and conclusion, we tried to make a translation faithful to the original. Results and Conclusion: Chapter 3 refers to five things. The first is relation between spleen and stomach, the second is how to diagnose diseases by using intergneration and inter-restriction of five elements, the third is roles of spleen that has an influence on four viscera through four seasons, the forth is the fact that quantity of gastroqi decides prognosis of diseases, and the fifth is that climate change has influence on the seriousness of diseases. Chapter 4 refers to four things. The first is relation between lung and large intestines, the second is ordinary and extraordinary pulse condition of lung, the third is that pulse condition including its speed, and the forth is how to diagnose diseases by using intergneration and inter-restriction of five elements and climate change.
Objectives : The paper attempted to analyze the contents found in the networks of five viscera in Yixuerumen's Zangfutiaofen published by Li Chan in 1575, and tried to reveal the body structure dealt in the contents through anatomical verification. Methods : Books such as Huataxianshengneizhaotu, Tushupian, and Shisijingfahui were used to compare, understand, and interpret the original texts and annotations of Yixuerumen in an attempt to verify these through anatomy reference texts and computer programs. Results : In Yixuerumen, some contents of the networks of five viscera were revised to see feixi as not one but two, and explained the relationship of intestinal organs through heart and lung. Anatomically speaking, the networks of five viscera has a vertical structure that unfolds top to bottom centering on aorta, and has many organs connected to it such as trachea, esophagus, splenic artery, pulmonary trunk, ureter, mesentery arteriovenous, gonadal artery, and ductus deferens. Conclusions : The networks of five viscera has a great significance in that it is the fruit of much efforts where oriental medicine tried to explain not only the functions of five viscera, but also the creation and circulation of qi, blood, and bodily fluids through anatomical observation.
