  • Background: Ambrosia trifida is a highly invasive annual plant, but effective control methods have not been proposed. Among various eradication methods, cutting is a simple measure to control invasive plants, and sowing seeds of native plants may effectively increase biotic resistance to invasion. In this study, we conducted a field experiment with two treatments: cutting and sowing seeds of six native or naturalized plants. Results: We found a significantly lower A. trifida abundance after cutting than in the control (77% decrease). Sowing seeds of native species did not provide any additional benefit for the control of A. trifida, but increased the importance values and diversity of other native vegetation. The abundance of A. trifida was negatively correlated with that of other plant taxa based on plant cover, biomass, and density. However, biotic resistance of sown plants was not effective to control invasion because A. trifida was so competitive. Conclusions: We concluded that cutting is an effective measure to control Ambrosia trifida while sowing seeds of native plants can increase native plant diversity.

  • In the dielectric resonator method, which has been widely used for measuring the microwave surface resistance of superconductors, accuracies in the geometrical factors (G-factors) affect the uncertainty in the measured surface resistance. We compare the G-factors of short-ended sapphire resonator as obtained by using field analysis with those by using computer simulations: The former is obtained by using the analytic expressions for the electric and the magnetic field components inside the resonator, and the latter by using computer software. The G-factors as obtained by using the latter appear to be closer to those obtained by using the former as the resonator space is divided into larger number of sub-space, i.e., a tighter mesh, with a difference of ~8 % observed for a mesh of 14400 sub-spaces reduced to ~2 % for 114996 sub-spaces. Variations in the relative uncertainty in the surface resistance of typical $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ superconductor films with those in the G-factors are studied, which provides an upper limit of the relative uncertainty in the G-factors required for realizing the target uncertainty in the surface resistance. These results could be useful in estimating the optimum number of meshes for obtaining the G-factors through computer simulations.

  • One hundred rice varieties were tested for their level of resistance to sheath blight disease at adult plant stage in field condition through 1984 to 1986. Rice plants were grown under ordinary seasonal culture and inoculated by k-2 fungus isolate during three years. k -1 isolate was also inoculated separately in 1984 and test under late seasonal culture was conducted in separate field in 1985. Degree of damage by the disease observed at 25 days after heading was used to identify the level of resistance of the rice varieties tested. Varietal differences of degree of damage were significant in five tests during three years, and the genotypic variance of degree of damage was always higher than environmental variance among varieties tested. Positive correlations between testing years, between cultural seasons, and between isolates inoculated were found in degree of damage of varieties tested for two or three years continuously. Degree of damage by the disease was correlated negatively with heading date of rice varieties except 1984 tests. Thus, the level of resistance should be compared among the variety group having almost same heading date in field condition, and late and extremely late variety groups should be tested for their level of resistance under appropriate environmental condition. Gayabyo, an early heading variety, and SR9713-54-3, a medium heading breeding line, showed consistent lower value of degree of damage during two or three years. These two varieties were selected as moderate resistant germplasm.

  • Electrical resistivity survey have been widely conducted at diverse scales, from a few centimeters for laboratory tests to kilometers for field tests. It measures electrical resistance through relationship of electric potential difference and current between two electrodes penetrated on the surface of medium, and eventually quantifies electrical resistivity known as inherent properties of the medium. In field or full-scale test, it assumes the electrodes as equivalent half-sphere electrodes that have a same surface area with different electrodes for ease of calculation because the contact area between electrode and medium is small and sufficient distance between two electrodes. However, small-scale laboratory test is significantly affected by the electrode geometries (penetrated depth, height, radius of electrode and distance between electrodes), which change the equipotential surface and electric current flow. Indeed, the electrode geometries may eventually cause a difference of electrical resistivity value. This study reviews the theoretical electrical resistance derived with various electrode geometries (half-sphere, cylinder, cylindrical with half-spherical tip, cylindrical with conical tip) and verifies the developed numerical module by comparing results with the theoretical electrical resistance. The distributions of electrical resistance around electrodes and among electrodes are analyzed. In addition, it is discussed how the electrical characteristic of cylindrical electrode with conical tip widely used in field test has effect on the electric current flow.

  • Results from study on physiological responses to $SO_2$ of Quercus spp. selected for restoration of vegetation damaged by air pollution in the field study were as follows. Tolerance of Quercus aliena, Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica used in this study to $SO_2$ was higher in that order and tolerance of these plants to $SO_2$ was high comparatively among trees composing of major forest vegetation of Korea including natural forests and plantations. Stomatal resistance of these plants was increased after exposure to $SO_2$ and range of increase was different among species. From discrepancy between order of tolerance to $SO_2$ and range of increase in stomatal resistance, we were estimated that resistance mechanisms of Quercus spp. were different among species as mechanism originated in avoidance and resistance, respectively. Water potential of plant leaves reduced after exposure to $SO_2$, degree of reduction accorded with order of tolerance to $SO_2$. Reduction of water potential of plants after exposure to $SO_2$ was initiated before appearance of visible damage in plant leaves and water potential of plants exposed to $SO_2$ of low concentration, in which plants were not showed viaible damage was also reduced.

  • Fracture resistance (J-R) curves, which are used for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analyses, decreased under tension-compression loading condition. This phenomenon was proved by several former researches, but the causes have not been clear yet. The objective of this paper is to investigate the cause of this phenomenon. On the basis of fracture resistance curve test results, strain hardening hypothesis, stress redistribution hypothesis and crack opening hypothesis were built. In this study, hardness tests, Automated Ball Indentation(ABI) tests, theoretical stress field analyses, and crack opening analyses were performed to prove the hypotheses. From this study, strain-hardening of material, generation of tensile residual stress at crack tip, and crack opening effects are proved as the causes of the decrease hypothesis.

  • The role of thermal contact resistance between a casting and a metal mold as well as natural convection in the melt during solidification of a pure metal is numerically studied. Numerical simulation is performed for a rectangular cavity using the coordinate transformation by boundary-fitted coordinate and pure aluminum is used as the phase- change material. The influences of thermal contact resistance on the interface shape and position, solidified volume fraction, temperature field and local heat transfer are investigated.

  • We enhanced the conductivity of PEDOT-PSS by mixing with glycerol and fabricated the low contact resistance of source and drain[S/D] electrodes of OTFT with PEDOT-PSS by ink-jetting printing. The contact resistance was much smaller by seven times than Au with $200k{\Omega}$ at $V_G=-5V$. For the bottom contacted OTFTs, the performance was comparable to OTFTs with Au electrodes with the field effect mobility of $0.2\;cm^2/V s$.

  • Germane-sillicide phase formation on S $i_{0.25}$G $e_{0.75}$ with Ni 100$\square$, Co 10$\square$/Ni 100$\square$ and Ni 50$\square$/Co 10$\square$/Ni 50$\square$ layer was studied by sheet resistance and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy(FESEM). Thermal stability of nickel germane-silicide is found to be improved by sputtering Ni/Co/Ni on the SiGe. After annealing at 600, 650, $700^{\circ}C$, 30min., the nickel germane-silicide formed by Ni 50$\square$/Co 10$\square$/Ni 50$\square$ layer achieved a sheet resistance less than 17ohms/sq.(almost the same to the value before furnace annealing for 30min.) , while the process of the other two ways result in high sheet resistance and even sheet resistance fail due to Ge segregation.ion.
