  • An important issue in the field of face recognitions and man-machine interfaces is an automatic detection of faces in visual scenes. it should be computationally fast enough to allow an online detection. In this paper we describe our ongoing work on face detection that models the face appearance by edge orientation and color distribution. We show that edge orientation is a powerful feature to describe objects like faces. We present a method for face region detection using edge orientation and a method for face feature detection using local color information. We demonstrate the capability of our detection method on an image database of 1877 images taken from more than 700 people. The variations in head size, lighting and background are considerable, and all images are taken using low-end cameras. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme achieves 94% detection rate with a resonable amount of computation time.

  • The effects of an amphiphilic agent and the orientation of BN on the microwave dielectric properties of BN / polyvinyl butyral (PVB) composites were investigated as a function of the BN content in volume fractions from 0.1 to 0.5 ($V_f$). The plate-shaped BN samples were oriented in the PVB matrix by physical processes, in this case tape casting and laminate methods. With an increase in the BN content, the dielectric constant (K) increased because the K of BN was higher than that of the PVB. At the same BN content, composites with an in-plane orientation of the BN showed a higher dielectric constant than that of composites with a transverse orientation of the BN because the ceramics were oriented parallel to the electric field. All of the composites showed nearly constant K values ranging from 1 to 9.4 GHz, indicating good frequency stability over a wide frequency range. At the same frequency, the K values of the composites increased with an increase in the BN content.

  • The composition, the preferred orientation and the magnetic properties of the CoFeCu alloys electrodepositen under various electrolysis conditions in sulfate baths ware investigated. As the D.C. current density increased, the Co content in alloy electrodeposits increased, while the Cu content decreased and Fe content remained content. The effect of magnetic field up to 300 Oe on the composition of alloys was negligible. The Cu content of the alloys deposited in pulse current increased noticeably with increasing off-time, while the Co and Fe content decreased. The coercivity of the alloys with 3.5 to 7.0wt.% Cu was 1.0 to 2.0 Oe, but increased noticeably above and below that composition. The application of magnetic field during deposition decreased the coercivity of alloys. The saturation flux density of the alloys with 3.5 to 5.0wt.% Cu was relatively high in the range from 16 to 20.7Gauss. The anisotropy field(HK) of the alloys deposited under the magnetic field(50∼300 Oe) ranged from 18 to 22 Oe. The alloys had fcc structure with (111) preferred orientation, whose distribution increased a little with increasing magnetic field.

  • The measurement of external magnetic field orientation using Giant Magneto Impedance (GMI) sensors has been performed. A soft magnetic alloy of $Co_{30}Fe_{34}Ni_{36}$ was electroplated on a Si wafer with a CoFeNi seed layer. V-shaped microwire patterns were formed using a conventional photolithography process. An external magnetic field was generated by a rectangular AlNiCo permanent magnet. The reference direction was defined as the external magnetic field direction oriented in the middle of 2 GMI devices. As the orientation of the magnetic field deviated from the reference direction, variation in the field component along each device introduced voltage changes. It was found that, by taking the voltage difference between the left and right arms of the Vshaped device, the nonlinearity of each device could be significantly reduced. The fabricated angle sensor had a linear range of approximately $70^{\circ}$ and an overall sensitivity of approximately 10 mV.

  • Effect of the north (N) or south pole (S) of a magnet and dithiothreitol (DTT) or heparin sodium (H) on the orientation of bull sperm were studied. Sperm were collected from four Japanese Black bulls of Okinawa Prefectural Livestock Experimental Station were treated with various concentrations of DTT or H during the first and sixth days and were then exposed them to N or S with a magnetic field of 3,000 Gauss for 24 hours. Experimental results showed that both N and S significantly increased the perpendicular oriented percentage of bull sperm in most treatments not treated or treated with DTT or H. Anisotropy of magnetic field of bull sperm was the main cause which induced them to orient perpendicular to the magnetic direction. The results of the experiment also showed that, in most cases, the two polarities had the same effect on the orientation of bull sperm. However, in some cases, N exerted a stronger effect on the perpendicular percentage of bull sperm than S, such as with the 20 mM DTT treatment at the first and sixth days and the 100 units H treatment at the sixth day. These cases showed that the perpendicular oriented percentage of bull sperm at N was significantly higher than that of S. It was only the 100 units heparin treatment at S both at the first and sixth days that upward perpendicular orientation was higher than that at N. This might be due to the fact that protamin-DNA structure of a small number of bull sperm nuclei slightly changed because of heparin action.

  • NbN thin films were deposited on thermally oxidized Si substrate at room temperature by using reactive magnetron sputtering in an $Ar-N_2$ gas mixture. Total sputtering gas pressure was fixed while varying $N_2$ flow rate from 1.4 sccm to 2.9 sccm. X-ray diffraction pattern analysis revealed dominant NbN(200) orientation in the low $N_2$ flow rate but emerging of (111) orientation with diminishing (200) orientation at higher flow rate. The dependences of the superconducting properties on the $N_2$ gas flow rate were investigated. All the NbN thin films showed a small negative temperature coefficient of resistance with resistivity ratio between 300 K and 20 K in the range from 0.98 to 0.89 as the $N_2$ flow rate is increased. Transition temperature showed non-monotonic dependence on $N_2$ flow rate reaching as high as 11.12 K determined by the mid-point temperature of the transition with transition width of 0.3 K. On the other hand, the upper critical field showed roughly linear increase with $N_2$ flow rate up to 2.7 sccm. The highest upper critical field extrapolated to 0 K was 17.4 T with corresponding coherence length of 4.3 nm. Our results are discussed with the granular nature of NbN thin films.

  • We have developed a whole-head MEG system for basic brain research and clinical application. The sensor system consists of a 152 SQUID gradiometer array oriented and located in a suitable way to cover a whole head of the human. The system measures magnetic fields generated by neuronal currents in the brain to get information on the brain activities. For this purpose, the field sensitivity determined by the position, orientation and geometry of the pickup coil as well as amplification factor of the electronic circuits should be known precisely. However, the position and orientation of the pickup coil might be changed from the designed specifications during cool down of the dewar and it is necessary to characterize the field sensitivity. In this study, we made calibration systems to determine the actual position and orientation of the 152 pickup coils and compared the localization results of the N100m source in the auditory cortex.

  • Digital close-range photogrammetric technique can measure and describe 3D geometric form from 2D image. This technique is a growing applicability in the field of sciences. Nevertheless, civil and mechanical field, which need measurements as precise as possible, use expensive measuring instruments in general. In addition there are occasions for analysis by means of visual method, since appropriate measuring instruments have been not yet available. This study therefore developed digital close-range photogrammetric technique with a movable orientation board to quickly measure deformation before and after destruction from simulated ground model of reinforced-soil wall. Then the results are compared with the measurements obtained using digital theodolite.

  • In this paper, an estimation system of vehicle position and orientation on magnetic lane, which is a parameter of the steering controller for automated lane following is described. To verify that the magnetic dipole model could be applied to a magnetic unit paved in roadway, the analysis of the model is compared with the data of 3-axis magnetic field measured experimentally. The sensor location could be estimated by analysis of the model based on experimental data. For the magnetic lane model merged magnetic unit, the relation of sensor location and magnetic field is acquired experimentally. The proposed estimation of vehicle position and orientation is adopted to automated lane following by computer simulation.
