  • In this study, the effect of molding condition on the tensile properties for plain woven hemp fiber reinforced green composite was examined. The tensile properties of the composite were compared with those of the plain woven jute fiber composite fabricated by the same process. Emulsion type biodegradable resin or polypropylene sheet was used as matrix. The composites were processed by the compression molding where the molding temperature and its heating time were changed from 160 to $190^{\circ}C$ and from 15 to 25 min, respectively. The following results were obtained from the experiment. The tensile property of hemp fiber reinforced polypropylene is improved in comparison with polypropylene bulk. The strength of composite is about 2.6 times that of the resin bulk specimen. Hemp fiber is more effective than jute fiber as reinforcement for green composite from the viewpoint of strength. The molding temperature and time are suitable below $180^{\circ}C$ and 20 min for hemp fiber reinforced green composite. Hemp fiber green composite has a tendency to decrease its tensile strength when fiber content is over 50 wt%.

  • To improve the mechanical properties of glass-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites through interfacial adhesion control between the PP matrix and glass fiber, the surface of the glass fiber was modified with PP-graft-maleic anhydride (MAPP). Surface modification of the glass fiber was carried out through the well-known hydrolysis-condensation reaction using 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane, and then subsequently treated with MAPP to produce the desired MAPP-anchored glass fiber (MAPP-a-GF). The glass-fiber-reinforced PP composites were prepared by typical melt-mixing technique. The effect of chemical modification of the glass fiber surface on the mechanical properties of composites was investigated. The resulting mechanical and morphological properties showed improved interfacial adhesion between the MAPP-a-GF and PP matrix in the composites.

  • The use of basalt fibers in various types of fiber-reinforced mortars has been increasing. One of the factors that expands the use of basalt fibers is that it is a natural fiber and therefore the production costs are lower than fibers such as PVA fiber. Basalt fibers have some drawbacks such as reducing the workability of mortars in which basalt fibers are added due to their structure, and negatively affecting the mechanical properties when used above a certain proportional amount depending on the type of mixture. For this purpose, in this study, as a different application, the surface of basalt fibers with different lengths (6 and 12 mm) was treated with Triton X-100 surfactant, and these disadvantages were tried to be reduced. In the study, a two-step method was followed. In the first one, the effectiveness of adding untreated and treated basalt fiber at 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2% by weight to the mortar mixtures was determined by conducting flow spread and flow rate as fresh mortar characteristics. In the second one, microstructural characterization and mechanical tests were performed as hardened mortar properties. The results showed that the flow characteristics of basalt fiber reinforced mortars treated with surfactant improved compared to untreated basalt fiber reinforced mortars. In terms of mechanical properties, the addition of 2% treated basalt fiber by weight to the mixtures allowed to obtain %18, %12, and%48 higher values of compressive, flexural, and tensile strength values, respectively, compared to the same amount of untreated basalt fiber mixtures.

  • Environment-friendly composites reinforced with bagasse fiber (BF), a kind of natural fiber as the remains from squeezed sugarcane, were fabricated by injection molding and press molding. As appropriate matrices for injection molding and press molding, polypropylene (PP) and polycaprolactone-cornstarch (PCL-C) were selected, as a typical recyclable resin and biodegradable resin, respectively. The mechanical properties of BF/PP composites were investigated in view of fiber mass fraction and injection molding conditions. And the mechanical properties and the biodegradation of BF/PCL composites were also evaluated. In the case of injection molding, the flexural modulus increased with an increase in fiber mass fraction, and the mechanical properties decreased with an increase in cylinder temperature due to the thermal degradation of BF. The optimum conditions increasing the flexural properties and the impact strength were $90^{\circ}C$ mold temperature, 30 s injection interval, and in the range of 165 to $185^{\circ}C$ cylinder temperature. On the other hand, as to BF/PCL-C fully-green composites, both the flexural properties and the impact strength increased with an increase in fiber mass fraction. It is considered that the BF compressed during preparation could result in the enhancement in mechanical properties. The results of the biodegradability test showed the addition of BF caused the acceleration of weight loss, which increased further with increasing fiber content. This reveals that the addition and the quantities of BF could promote the biodegradation of fully-green composites.

  • Steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) is a composite material possessing many physical and mechanical properties which are distinct from unreinforced concrete. The use of steel fiber reinforcement to improve the flexural and tensile strengths, extensibility and toughness of ordinary cement concrete is well known at present, but reinforcement of polymer concrete with steel fibers has been hardly reported untill now. The objective of this study was to improve the properties of the polymer concrete by addition of steel fibers. In this paper steel fiber reinforced polymer concrete is prepared with various steel fiber contents and aspect ratio($\ell$ /d), and their mechanical properties were investigated experimentally.

  • In this study mechanical properties of various fiber reinforced permeability concrete mixtures are investigated. Several mixes with fiber kinds(steel fiber, polyprophylen fiber, carbon fiber) and different fiber content(steel fiber : 0.3~0.9vol.%, polyprophylen fiber : 0.1~0.5vol.%, carbon fiber : 0.2~0.7vol.%) were studied. Test results are presented in terms of compressive strength, tensile-flexural strength and load-deflection behavior. The effect of fiber reinforcement does not increase the compressive strength of permeability concrete without fiber. Also, the tensile-flexural strength using various fibers are appeared good strength increase as conventional fiber reinforced concrete. Therefore, use of fiber for permeability concrete is necessary to improve of tensile-flexural properties and deformation performance(toughness).

  • The polypropylene(PP) fiber is poised as a low cost alternative for reinforcement in structural applications in comparison with other high performance fibers, such as the polyvinyl-alcohol(PVA), polyethylene, carbon and aramid fiber. The mechanical properties of the composite are strongly determined by the interfacial behavior of fiber and cementitious matrix. The crack bridging mechanism contribute to composite toughness from activation of the fiber-matrix interface where energy is dissipated through debonding of the interface and fiber pullout. In this study, therefore, the pullout behavior of PP fibers is investigated. Experimental work includes the investigation of the interfacial properties, and the composite property. The quantification of interfacial properties, the frictional bond is achieved through single fiber pullout test. A study on the effect of inclination angle on fiber pullout behavior is also conducted.

  • Glass fiber reinforced nylon has been used in many plastic industries. Mechanical properties of reinforced plastics depend upon types of glass fiber as well as loading of glass fiber. Tensile properties of glass fiber reinforced nylon66 have been studied for different glass fiber types and sizes. Types of glass fibers were circular and flat, and diameters were 7, 10, and 13 micrometers. Orientations of glass fibers in the matrix of nylon66 have been analyzed through X-ray CT. Tensile specimens were prepared by cutting out of square plates of $100{\times}100{\times}3mm$ with different angles such as 0, 45, and $90^{\circ}$ to the flow direction. As the loading of glass fiber increases to 45 wt% tensile strength increases up 2.5 times compare with neat nylon66. Anisotropic tensile strength has been observed and minimum tensile strength was measured in the specimen cut from perpendicular to the flow direction.
