Using a Body Scanner in Assessing Perceptions of Attractiveness: Cross-Regional Study

  • Previous research reported that body size measured as Body Mass Index (BMI) and body shape measured as waist-hip-ratio (WHR) are two essential factors that form the perceptions of body attractiveness. However, the debate on the importance of BMI versus WHR is ongoing. In addition, scholarly articles, that focus on the role of geographic and cultural variability on perceptions of attractiveness, report inconsistent results. Some suggested that according to globalization and the rise of mass media, geographic variability of perceptions of attractiveness have been altered, while others believed that it remains. This study cross-regionally investigates the role of body size and body shape on the perceptions of female attractiveness. Samples were composed of 107 female college students in Alabama and 107 female college students in California. Participants viewed 27 three-dimensional body scan images of women in three body shapes (pear, hourglass, and rectangle) and three body sizes (underweight, normal weight, and overweight) and rated their perceptions of attractiveness. Images were shown to students in a random order with an overhead projector and Microsoft Office PowerPoint software. A three-way mixed-ANOVA was conducted to analyze the data. The results of the study showed that some regional differences exist between the two sample groups. However, regardless of the regional difference, hourglass shapes were perceived to be the most attractive shape and underweight sizes were perceived to be the most attractive size for both samples.

여자대학생의 외모에 대한 사회문화적 영향과 신체이미지가 외모향상추구행동에 미치는 영향 (Sociocultural Influence of Appearance and Body Image on Appearance Enhancement Behavior of Female College Students)

  • This study investigated the effects of sociocultural influence and body image on appearance enhancement behavior (facial management, clothing selection, and weight/figure management). For data collection, a questionnaire was administrated to 378 female college students in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from May $23^{rd}$ to June $10^{th}$ 2013. A SPSS 18.0 statistics package was used to analyze data along with descriptive statistical analysis, frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and regression analysis and frequency analysis. The results were as follows. First, sociocultural influences were divided into three factors: media influence, peer influence, and parental influence. Overall sociocultural influences had positive effects on appearance enhancement behavior. Second, body image was divided into: appearances-management, body-satisfaction and body confidence. Sociocultural influences had a significant effect on overall body image. Third, body image positively affected overall appearance enhancement behavior.

일부 서울지역 남.여 고교생의 체격과 영양상태에 관한 유사종단적 연구 (A Semi-longitudinal Study on Physiques and Nutritional Status of Korean Youth in a Seoul Special City)

  • This study was carried out to know physical growth and development, physical and nutritional indices and body fat weight and so forth by semi-longitudinal research method to measure body height, body weight, chest girth and sitting height of 260 of general high school and 306 of vocational high school 3rd grade students who are living in Seoul and born from 1966 March 1st to 1967 Feb.28th. The results are as follows: 1) Physical growth and development Growth in terms of body height showed one step straight linear development, andthat of body weight showed two step straight linear development in each section in high school. The age of cross over between two sexes of general high school students was between 10.6 to 12. 3 years in body height, between 10.8 to 13 years in body weight, between 11.2 to 14.6 years in chest girth and between 10 to 13 years in sitting height. The age of cross over between two sexes of vocational high school students was between 10.5 to 12.5 years in body height, between 10.5 to 12.5 years in body weight, between 10.5 to 12.5 years in chest girth and between 10.5 to 12.5 years in sitting height. In this periods, female group was superior to male group and after that male group was superior to female group again. The growth of vocational school students was superior to that of general school students in both sexes in terms of body height and body weight significantly. 2) Physical growth and nutritional indices In all cases of relative body weight, relative chest girth and relative sitting height, it was found to be increasing thereafter with advancing ages. In cases of $R{\"{o}}hrer$ index and Kaup index, it was found to be reaching to normal state thereafter with advancing ages. In each case of Vervaeck and Pelidisi index, it was found to be increasing and reaching to normal state thereafter with advancing ages. 3) Total body fat by vital measuring method Average values of body surface area, body volume and body density are measured indirectly by using the body height and body weight as Table 12, 13 and 14. The rate of body fat weight of general high school students was from minimum $11.96{\pm}3.53%(3.33{\pm}1.10kg$) to maximum $18.25{\pm}6.46%(9.08{\pm}2.01kg$) in male and from $25.88{\pm}3.62%(7.96{\pm}0.78kg$) to $43.00{\pm}7.22%(12.91{\pm}1.21kg$) in female. The rate of body fat weight of vocational high school students was from minimum $11.20{\pm}2.88%(3.32{\pm}1.13kg$) to maximum $17.16{\pm}5.88(10.83{\pm}3.16kg$) in male and from minimum $25.11{\pm}2.26%(7.91{\pm}0.89kg$) to maximum $42.16{\pm}7.96%(13.22{\pm}1.75kg$) in female.

  • 후기산업사회에서 몸에 대한 관심은, 몸의 개념을 단순히 건강한 몸으로부터 스타일을 구현하는 도구로서, 개인의 품격을 드러내주는 외피로서, 그리고 자신의 정체성을 수행하는 터전으로 확장시켜 나가는데 큰 기여를 했다. 이에 따라 몸 이미지(body image)는 물질적 몸 그 자체에 못지 않게 중요한 하나의 재현으로서 존재론적 의미를 갖게 되었다. 이 경향은 여성에 있어서 극대화되고 있으며 이 과정에서 사회문화적 통념은 여성들의 몸 이미지의 전형을 제시하면서 이를 내면화하도록 강제하고 있다. 몸에 대한 사회문화적 관심이 높아지면서 중요한 학문적 개념으로 등장하고 있는 몸 이미지 개념은 정신, 육체, 개인과 사회의 특성에 대한 인식론적 가정들을 토대로 하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 주요 학문 대상으로 부상하고 있는 몸 이미지의 이원론적 형성과정, 즉 사회문화적 전형(stereotype)화와 이 전형들이 시각 체계(the scopic regime)를 통해 주관적으로 내면화되는 과정의 상호 역동성에 대한 이론적 논의를 살펴보고 이 상호작용이 실제몸매관리산업 광고에 등장하는 몸 이미지에서 어떻게 드러나는지 이미지 분석을 통하여 검증해보았다. 분석대상은 다국적 몸매관리업체인 M사 광고 이미지와 광고 문안, 그리고 보도자료 등 홍보 문건이다. 이 분석을 통해 한국의 몸 이미지의 전형이 서구화되어 있고 이에 남성적 응시가 다각도로 용해되어 있으며 이의 내면화가 매우 정교하게 이루어지고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 이로써 여성 몸 이미지의 건강한 생산과 확산이 여성의 주체적 노력에 의하여 이루어져야할 것이라는 당위성이 대두되었다.

체육전공 신입생들의 체질량지수, 신체이미지, 식사태도 및 신체활동량 조사 (The Investigation of Body Mass Index, Body Image, Eating Attitude, and Physical Activity in Physical Education Freshman)

  • 본 연구는 체육전공 남녀 신입생들을 대상으로 체질량지수(Body mass index; BMI), 신체이미지, 식사태도 및 신체활동량의 차이와 상관관계를 규명하는데 있다. 남녀 체육전공 신입생 595명(남녀: 341 vs. 254)이 본 연구에 참여하였고, 대상자들은 신체이미지(Body sahpe questionnaire; BSQ), 식사태도(Eating attitude test-26; EAT-26), 및 신체활동(International physical activity questionnaires; IPAQ)에 대한 설문지를 작성하였다. 체질량지수에 따라 분류하였을 때 정상체중은 67.2%로 나타났으며, 저체중은 5.4%, 과체중과 비만이 17.8%, 9.6%로 나타났다. 남학생들의 57.7%와 여학생들의 78.7%는 정상체중으로 분류되었다. BSQ 검사 결과 총 대상자 중 불만족의 비율은 48.2%로 나타났으며, 남학생 22.9%와 여학생 82.3%가 불만족으로 나타났다. EAT-26 검사 결과 전체 20.2%가 비정상적인 식사태도를 가지고 있었으며, 남학생과 여학생의 비율은 7.3% vs. 37.4%로 나타났다. 신체 활동량 조사 결과 99%의 대상자들이 활동적으로 조사되었다. BMI, BSQ, EAT-26, 그리고 신체활동량은 남녀 간에 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였다. 신체이미지와 식사태도는 남녀 대상자 모두에서 유의한 상관관계를 보였으며, 체질량지수는 남자 대상자들에서만 신체이미지와 식사태도와 유의한 상관관계가 있었다. 그러나 신체활동량은 남녀 모두에서 다른 변인들과 상관관계가 없었다. 결론적으로 체육전공 대학생들의 신체불만족과 비정상적인 식사태도의 비율이 높으며, 신체이미지의 불만족이 높을수록 비정상적인 식사태도를 가지고 있는 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 이에 적합한 교육과 사회적 인식의 전환이 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

일부 도시지역 여대생들의 신체상과 섭식 장애 및 영양 섭취 양상 (Body Image, Eating Problems and Dietary Intakes among Female College Students in Urban Area of Korea)

  • Concern about body weight among young females is too much, so distorted body image and restrained eating are serious problems among Korean young females. A society preoccupied with thinness give a psychological burden to women, this burden may have adverse effects on health physically and psychologically. We tried this study to investigate body image, eating problems, and dietary intakes among female college students in urban areas of Korea. We satisfactorily surveyed using their body weight, desired weight dieting, binge eating, and night eating by self-questionnaires with 500 female college students. We evaluated their dietary intakes by semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires to assess their usual intakes. After removing incomplete data, we analyzed 469 data by SAS 6.10. The 469 women aged 21.1 years. Their mean height, weight, and BMI were 161.4cm, 52.5kg, and 20.2kg/$m^2$ respectively. Though the frequency of obesity was only 2.6$\%$, the frequency of dissatisfaction with their body weight was 84.7$\%$. Female college students desired their hight, weight, and BMI to be 165.8cm, 48.2kg, and 17.5kg/$m^2$, respectively. The frequency of binge eating and night eating were 20.7$\%$and 6.8$\%$. The odds ratios for binge eating and night eating were 10.9(95$\%$ CI : 2.6-15.1) and 6.0(95% CI : 1.8-14.8) in the group satisfied with their body weight compared with the dissatisfied group. The odds ratios for binge eating and night eating were 2.6(95% CI : 1.6-4.4) and 2.4(95% CI : 1.1-5.4) in the dieting group compared with the non-dieting group. The mean caloric intake was 1, 840kacl and percent intakes of carbohydrate, protein, and fat wee 57.2$\%$, 16.3$\%$, and 24.0$\%$, respectively. The dieting group showed deficient intakes of protein and calcium significantly compared with the non-dieting group showed deficient intakes of protein and calcium significantly compared with the non-dieting group. Almost all women college students in urban area had dissatisfaction with their body shape, and desired severe undrerweight. The frequency of binge eating and night eating increased according to dissatisfaction with body weight, diet, and distortion of body image. Dieting has adverse effect on the intakes of essential nutrients. Educations is needed to correct distorted body image, and bad eating habits in young females, and marked preoccupation with thinness among women should then be reduced. 전북지역 일부 남녀교사의 체지방률에 의한 비만도와 연령에 따른 영양소 섭취와 혈중지질 및 골밀도에 관한 연구 (A Study of Nutrient Intakes, Blood Lipids and Bone Mineral Density according to Obesity Degree by Percentage of Body Fat and Age between Male and Female Teacher in Jeonbuk Province, Korea)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare nutrient intakes, blood lipids and bone mineral density of male (n = 59) and female (n = 172) teachers according to the obesity index by percentage of body fat and age. The energy intakes of obesity group were higher than normal group in male (p < 0.05), but were not significant in female. The protein intake ratio among three energy nutrients for male was higher than female (p < 0.001), and lipid intake ratio of obesity group in female was a little higher than male that was not significant. TC, LDL, TC/HDL, risk of coronary heart disease, blood glucose and blood pressure of obesity group were higher than normal group in female (p < 0.01 ~ p < 0.001), but were little significance in male. Risk of coronary heart disease was affected by gender (p < 0.001), obesity degree (p < 0.01), age (p < 0.001), and interaction of gender and age (p < 0.001). Blood glucose was affected by obesity degree (p < 0.05), but was not affected by age. T-scores of forearm for female (= -1.42) were lower than that of male = -0.95), and T-scores of obesity group in male (= 0.12) were higher than that of normal group (= -0.33) but were not significant in female. The T-scores of forearm for female were affected by age (p < 0.05) and gender (p < 0.01), but calcaneus was not affected by gender. These results suggest lipid intake ratio should be balanced for obesity group in female. Nutritional education for treatment obesity to prevent hyperlipidemia and arteriosclerosis is necessary for obesity group and older age groups. T-scores of forearm were lower than calcaneus, so arm exercise would be especially required to prevent osteoporosis for older age women groups.

연령 및 성별에 따른 체중 감량에 대한 인식 조사 (Recognition of Body Weight Loss according to Age and Gender)

  • 본 연구는 체격, 체중감량 목표 및 개념, 지식정도 등의 체중감량에 대한 인식을 조사하기 위하여 수행되었다. 1) 조사대상자의 평균 연령은 남성 39.9세 여성 39.3세였고, 신장, 체중과 BMI는 연령과 성별에 따라 유의적인 차이 (p<0.05)를 나타내었다. 2) 비만도의 분포는 연령이 높고 남성의 경우 과체중과 비만이 유의적으로 많았다 (p<0.05). 3) 본 연구의 대상자들은 연령이 낮거나 여성의 경우 체중이 저체중이거나 정상체중임에도 불구하고 희망체중은 낮아 왜곡된 체형인식을 가지고 있었다. 4) 체중감량에 대한 목표는 연령이 낮을수록 외모적 이유로, 연령이 높을수록 건강상의 이유라고 대답하였다 (p<0.05). 체중감량 개념에 대해서는 연령이 낮을수록 "약간 마르거나 날씬한 몸매를 유지하는 것"이라고 인식한 반면, 연령이 높을수록 "정상 체중에 도달하기 위해 노력하는 것" 또는 "병에 걸리지 않도록 체중을 유지하는 것"이라고 대답하여 연령에 따른 유의적인 차이를 보여주었다 (p < 0.05). 5) 체중감량과 식습관, 운동 및 영양지식과 같은 체중감량에 관한 지식에 관한 연령과 성별에 따른 총 정답률의 유의적인 차이는 보이지 않았다. "물도 살을 찌게 한다"라는 문항은 68.5%의 가장 낮은 정답률을 보였으며, "아침식사를 거르는 것은 다이어트에 효과적이다"라는 문항에 91.7%의 가장 높은 정답률을 보였다. 본 연구 결과 성별, 연령별에 따라 체중감량에 대한 인식 목적 희망체중감량 목표 등에서 유의적인 차이가 나타났다. 따라서 체중감량을 위한 영양교육 자료 개발시 성별, 연령별로 특화된 맞춤형 영양교육 컨텐츠 개발이 필요하리라 사료된다.

무용 전공 여고생들의 체지방 비율과 관련 식사 변인에 대한 조사 (Body Fat and Dietary Factors in Female High School Dancers)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the percentage of body fat by three different methods and to investigate the relationship between food preference and intake and percentage of body fat in female high school dancers. Height, weight , girth circumference, and near infrared body fat(%) on were measured 112 subjects BMI body fat (%) , girth circumference body fat (%) , and anthropometric indices were also calculated . Dietary data was collected by questionnaire. All data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, correlation, and crosstabulation; analysis, The results are summarized as follows ; 1) Average age of the subjects was 16.5 height was 161.0cm, weight was 50.7kg , near infra-red body fat was 27.0% BMI body fat was 21.9% , and girth circumference body fat 20.9%. 2) Near infra-red body fat (%), BMI body fat(%) , BMI , Rohrer index , and % ideal weight showed the most significant correlations with upper arm girth. The differences in the height among subject physiques classified by body fat(%) were non-significant, but the differences in height by BMI, Rohrer index, and % ideal weight were significant. 3) The preference values of fatty foods such as meat, milk, and fish were shown to increase with the percentage of body fat, The subjects who had higher percentage of body fat preferred foods cooked in oil. In contrast, the students with higher percentage of body fat were thought to have lower food intake and between meals frequencies. It was shown in this study that higher preference values for animal fatty foods and foods containing more cooking oil induced significant increases in body fat and weight.

조리 전공 대학생의 생활습관과 자신의 건강상태 인식이 체지방률에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Life Style and Self-Recognition of Health Conditions on the of Body Fat % in Hotel Culinary College Students)

  • This study was to investigate the effects of the body fat $\%$ on life styles and self-recognition of health conditions in hotel culinary college students. This survey was conducted using the questionnaires for 144 students (110 males, 34 female) in Hongseung-located college. More exercise time and less frequency of alcoholic beverage they intake, lowered their body fat $\%$. Males did stronger exercise and had lower body fat $\%$ than females. The stronger exercise they did, the lower body fat $\%$ they had, and were more satisfied with their present weight. Since they had more alcoholic beverage, they smoked more. Less smoking, more abdominal obesity they were. The less satisfaction with their body weights, the higher body fat $\%$ they had. The obese less were content with their weights. More recognition of obese shape, higher body fat $\%$ they had and abdominal obesity they were. Female had higher body fat $\%$ and were more abdominal obesity, did weak action, less smoke and weak exercise than male. Higher body fat $\%$ they had, more abdominal obesity they were. The more part time jobs they had, they did not smoke or were not satisfied with their body weights. Female students in culinary arts division had higher body fat $\%$ and were dissatisfied with their body weights and did less exercise or subnormal exercises.
