  • This paper is the results of experimental and numerical works on analyzing the geotechnical engineering behavior and characteristics of excavated clay slope formed by the method of excavated replacement which is one of treatments in soft soil ground. For the centrifuge model tests, models of excavated clay slope were prepared by remolding the marine clayey soil sampled from the field. Tests were performed with changing the slope to investigate the behavior of them. On the other hand, numerical analyses were carried out to analyze the change of safety factor against instability of slope with time. Changes of pore water pressure, shear strength and displacement were also investigated. As results of centrifuge model tests with slopes of 1:1.5 and 1:3 using the confining body of simulating the effect of excavation, for the case of 1:1.5, slope failure occurred right after remove the confining body whereas relatively small displacements within the range of 3.2mm, implying to maintain the stability of slope, were observed for the case of 1:3 slope. From the results of numerical analyses using the software of PLAXIS to investigate the stability of slope after excavation, the minimum safety factor against slope failure was 1.28 for the case of 1:3 slope. The further researches in the future are required with considerations of build up of static pore water pressures during acceleration of centrifuge, depth of excavation influencing the behavior of the slope and permeability of the slope since excavation of the slope was not simulated well resulted from the limitations of apparatus at the stage of excavation during the centrifuge tests.

  • The use of TBM has been rapidly increased in recent years since TBM has been introduced to Korea in 1985 and Korea came to occupy 27% of TBM holding ratio in the world. Despite a lot of experience, study on promoting the efficiency of TBM excavation is insufficient. The factors that influence the efficiency of excavation are the mechanical farttor geotechnical factor and management factor. The study on the efficiency of excavation has focused on the improvement of mechanical factor. But geotechnical factor is also very important and by this factor engineer can estimate the applicability of TBM. The purpose of this paper is to understand the effectiveness of TBM excavation for vari orts rock quality by analysing relations between rock quality and TBM excavation.

  • Recently, it is a trend of the underground excavation to become larger and deeper for more effective use of available space and with the advent of new excavation technologies. The ground typically has a complex stratigraphy. The excavation can lead to large deformation in the nearby structures and large earth pressure on the wall. This can lead to serious problem in the stability of the wall. For the retaining wall to be safely constructed, it is important that the stratigraphy and engineering properties of the ground be accurately estimated, based on the excavation plan and appropriate excavation method. This study uses the measured field data and numerical results to characterize the characteristics of the lateral deformation of the retaining wall. A touredof six field data were analysed. SUNEX, a numerical program which uses the elasto-plastic model to represent the soil, was used. It was shown that the measured deformations exceeded the proposed values for shallow excavations. Overall, the maximum lateral deformation was within the proposed value and hence, the walls were analyzed as safe.

  • It is generally known that the mechanism of behavior in the flexible earth retaining system is relatively more complicated than in the rigid earth retaining system. Moreover in the case of long span strut supporting system the analysis of strut axial force change becomes more difficult when the differences of ground condition and excavation work progress on both sides of excavation section are added. When deeper excavation than the specification or installation delay of supporting system or change of ground condition happen during construction process, lots of axial force can be induced in some struts, which threaten the safety of construction. This paper introduces two examples of long span deep excavation where struts and rock bolts were used as a supporting system with flexible wall structure. The characteristics of ground deformation and strut axial force change, which were measured in the sections of two examples that are 50 meters apart in one construction site and have almost similar design and construction conditions were analysed, the similarity and difference between measurement results of two examples were compared and investigated. This article aims to improve and develop the technique of design and construction in future projects having similar ground condition and supporting method.

  • This study analyzes the approach method for the excavation of the outstanding projects in order to improve the ODA quality in the agricultural sector in a situation of the recent quantitative expansion of the Korea's ODA. This analysis is based on the ODA development paradigm of the international society, Korea's ODA development trends, the problems of system, procedure and contents. The analysis drew five approaches, such as an approach based on the strategies, an approach based on the comparative advantage, an approach based on the partnership, an approach based on the networking, an approach of modeling. If each approach method is applied to the excavation of project closely linked to other approach methods, it would be easier to excavate outstanding project. And it could lead to enhancement of project effectiveness. This study introduced the KAPEX program which excavate the customized ODA projects through the application of these approach methods.

  • In tunnel excavation using blast, the wire saw rock cutting method generates a discontinuity perimeter around the center cut, and thus prevents blast vibration propagation to reduce vibration and noise. Therefore, the method is expected to be easy to use and economical compared with other methods. In this paper, the cutting mechanism of wire saw in tunnel excavation is investigated. A model describing the changes in cutting depth and wire saw shape inside a rock during cutting is established and validated for this purpose. Through a simulation using the model, the important characteristics of wire saw cut are investigated, and the influences of cutting conditions, such as wire saw tension, wire saw speed, feed speed, depth, and diameter of boring, on cutting performance are also examined. A method to improve the cutting performance is proposed based on the results.

  • In this study, the characteristics of a new rock cracking method using steam pressure are briefly presented. The rock cracking method was originally developed as a means to decrease the ground vibrations from underground rock excavations. The validation tests were also conducted by applying the method to an actual rock tunnel under construction. The ground vibrations were measured in the vicinity of the test site. The measured vibration results were compared with the values predicted by an attenuation equation, which had been proposed by a company in Japan. Also, a simple cost assessment for the method was conducted to demonstrate its cost effectiveness in underground tunnel excavations.

  • This paper presents the effect of excavating methods on tunnel behavior. As part of this study, it is preliminarily focused on the comparison of two different excavation methods, center diaphram (CD) method and ringcut (RC) method. Especially, the purpose of this research is to study the behavioral mechanism of two tunnels which share the same construction environment but different excavating method. Two numerical analysis models with the same tunnel section and material properties are compared in this study, and they are analyzed by 3D finite element analysis. In each model, face stability, crown displacement, ground settlement, and shotcrete-lining stress are computed, then the general behavior of CD method and RC method is studied. The results indicate that the CD method tends to be effective in controlling tunnel displacement while the RC method is more effective in controlling ground settlement. Design implications of the findings from this study are discussed.

  • There have been high demands for urban underground structures. However, they should be rapidly constructed while maintaining the functions of adjacent structures and road systems especially in urban areas. In this respect, trenchless excavation methods are considered to very effective in minimizing ground displacements during excavation works. A variety of field conditions such as economic, technical and environmental aspects should be taken into consideration when an optimum trechless excavation method is to be chosen in a given condition. Therefore, this study aims to carry out a fundamental study to select an optimum trenchless excavation method by the decision making technique. Especially, AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) which is a kind of a multiple attribute decision making process is adopted to consider the opinions of experts and to derive reliable decision criteria. As a result, the weights of key factors and the most effective trenchless methods for different ground conditions were proposed in this study.
