The ink jet printer media advance system is required to be exactly driven to the target position via tracking the reference velocity profile to obtain the high quality print image. A single gain PID controller is not sufficient to fulfill the control objectives, the exact velocity tracking and the accurate positioning, at the same time. A dual PID controller and its switching strategy are presented in this paper to achieve the control objectives. The media advance system is controlled by two separate PID controllers, one of which is for velocity control, and the other is for position control. A PID controller controls the velocity of the media advance system until it reaches the predetermined switching position. When the media advance system passes the predetermined position, the controller is switched to the other PID controller which is more profitable for exact positioning. The switching position is determined by the estimated stop distance. The simulation and experimental results are presented to show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed controller.
This paper considers the design problem of adaptive filters based an the state-space models for linear discrete-time stationary stochastic signal processes. The adaptive state estimator consists of both the predictor and the sequential prediction error estimator. The discrete Chandrasakhar filter developed by author is employed as the predictor and the nonlinear least-squares estimator is used as the sequential prediction error estimator. Two models are presented for calculating the parameter sensitivity functions in the adaptive filter. One is the exact model called the linear innovations model and the other is the simplified model obtained by neglecting the sensitivities of the Chandrasekhar X and Y functions with respect to the unknown parameters in the exact model.

A new Kirchhoff approximation(KA) method was proposed for microwave scttering from randomly rough surfaces. Using the spectral representation of delta function and its sifting theorem, a new KA was formulated directly without any further approximation, and this formulated was used to compute exact backscttering coefficients. The validity of the KA was verified by a numerical method, and this new KA technique was used to evaluate the existing approximated KkA methods; i.t., the zeroth-order and the first-order approximated physical optics(PO) models. It was shown that the first-order approximated PO model has small error than the zeroth-order approximated PO model at low incidence angles and the opposite happens at higher incidence angles. This new KA model can be used to compute exact scattering coefficients in the validity regions of KA and to evaluate other theoretical and numerical models for scattering from randomly rough surfaces.
In this paper, an efficient beam tracking algorithm for a regularized zero-forcing (RZF) approach in slowly fading multiple-input and single-output (MISO) broadcast channels is considered. By modifying an RZF equation, an RZF beam tracking algorithm is proposed using matrix perturbation theory. The proposed algorithm utilizes both beams from the previous time step and channel difference (between the previous and current time steps) to calculate the RZF beams. The tracking performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed in terms of the mean square error (MSE) between a tracking approach and an exact recomputing approach, and in terms of the additional MSE caused by the beam tracking error at the receiver. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm has almost the same performance as the exact recomputing approach in terms of the sum rate.
In this paper, the $(\frac{G'}{G})$-expansion method is used to construct new exact travelling wave solutions of some nonlinear evolution equations. The travelling wave solutions in general form are expressed by the hyperbolic functions, the trigonometric functions and the rational functions, as a result many previously known solitary waves are recovered as special cases. The $(\frac{G'}{G})$-expansion method is direct, concise, and effective, and can be applied to man other nonlinear evolution equations arising in mathematical physics.
An efficient descent method for unconstrained optimization problems is line search method in which the step size is required to choose at each iteration after a descent direction is determined. There are many ways to choose the step sizes, such as the exact line search, Armijo line search, Goldstein line search, and Wolfe line search, etc. In this paper we propose a new inexact line search for a general descent method and establish some global convergence properties. This new line search has many advantages comparing with other similar inexact line searches. Moreover, we analyze the global convergence and local convergence rate of some special descent methods with the new line search. Preliminary numerical results show that the new line search is available and efficient in practical computation.
A simple method is proposed to split the flux vector of the Euler equations by introducing two artificial wave speeds. The direction of wave propagation can be adjusted by these two wave speeds. This idea greatly simplifies the upwinding, and leads to a new family of upwind schemes. Numerical flux function for multi-dimensional Euler equations is formulated for any grid system, structured or unstructured. A remarkable simplicity of the scheme is that it successfully achieves one-sided approximation for all waves without recourse to any matrix operation. Moreover, its accuracy is comparable with the exact Riemann solver. For 1-D Euler equations, the scheme actually surpasses the exact solver in avoiding expansion shocks without any additional entropy fix. The scheme can exactly resolve stationary contact discontinuities, and it is also freed of the carbuncle problem in multidimensional computations.

This study presents an efficient method for robust optimal design. In order to avoid the excessive evaluations of the exact performance functions, two-point diagonal quadratic approximation method is employed for approximating them during optimization process. This approximation method is one of the two point approximation methods. Therefore, the second order sensitivity information of the approximated performance functions are calculated by an analytical method. As a result, this enables one to avoid the expensive evaluations of the exact $2^{nd}$ derivatives of the performance functions unlike the conventional robust optimal design methods based on the gradient information. Finally, in order to show the numerical performance of the proposed method, one mathematical problem and two mechanical design problems are solved and their results are compared with those of the conventional methods.

In order to specify the accuracy of the cylindrical shell theories, several cylindrical shell equations are studied. Cheng's equation is used as the exact theory for circular cylindrical shells. An error factor is defined and used for the measure of the accuracy in various cylindrical shell theories. The line load applied along generators of a thin-walled circular cylidrical shell of finite length is investigated as a numerical example. These numerical results show that Cheng's equation is used for the fundamental cylindrical shell equation and the difficulties in cumputation by a digital computer are same as the simplified equations, such as Donnell's Morley's, and Vlasov's equations.
Several methods for improving the interlaminar strength and fracture toughness of composite materials are developed. Through-the-thickness stitching is considered one of the most common ways to prevent delamination. Stitching significantly increases the Mode I fracture toughness and moderately improves the Mode II fracture toughness. An analytical model has been developed for simulating the behavior of stitched double cantilever beam specimen under various loading conditions. For z-directional load and moment about the y-axis the numerical solutions are compared with the exact solutions. The derived formulation shows good accuracy when the relative error of displacement and rotation between numerical and exact solution were calculated. Thus we can use the present model with confidence in analyzing other problems involving stitched beams.
