VLSI Design of EPR-4 Viterbi Decoder for Magnetic Disk Read Channel (자기 디스크 출력 채널용 EPR-4 비터비 디코더의 VLSI 설계)

  • In this paper ERP-4 viterbi decoder for magnetic disk read channel is designed. The viterbi decoder consists of ACS circuit, path memory circuit, minimum detection circuit, and output selection circuit. In the viterbi decoder the number of state is reduced from 8 to 6 using (1,7) RLL codes and modulo comparison based on 2's complement arithmetic is applied to handle overflow problem of ACS module. Also to determine the correct symbol values in nonconvergent condition of path memory, pipelined minimum detector which determines path with minimum state metric is used. The EPR-4 viterbi decoder is designed using 0.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS technology and consists of about 15,300 transistors and has 250 Mbps data rates under 3.3 volts.

Oxidation Reaction of CO and $C_2H_4$ on Zinc Oxide (산화아연에서의 CO, $C_2H_4$의 산화반응)

  • The surface reactions of CO and $C_2H_4$ with adsorbed oxygen on ZnO were studied by means of EPR spectroscopy. The EPR spectra of $O_2$ adsorbed ZnO at various temperatures were compared, and the signal at g = 2.014 was characterized as trapped $O^-$ at oxygen vacancy. CO and $C_2H_4$ react with $O^-$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and desorbed as $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ above $200^{\circ}C$. $O_2^-$ species interact with $C_2H_4$ about $100^{\circ}C$, but desorption of partial oxidation products also was not observed until the temperature was raised to $200^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, the electric property was investigated for insulation diagnosis of radiation of EPR electric power cables by partially irradiation with $^{60}Co-{\gamma}$ rays. As the rate of radiation increased from 100Mrad to 200Mrad, charging current and discharging current were increased from $1.03{\times}10^{-7}$(A) to $4.3{\times}10^{-9}$(A). In addition, we found charging current and discharging current of cables subjected to 50% and 16.7% irradiation changed the length of the part 1/2 to 1/6 as in comparison with cables degraded by 100% irradiation. For 22m and 66m of cables which had not been degraded yet, we realized the value of charging current and discharging current of 66m cables is three times higher than 22m cables. From these results, it is demonstrated that the possibility of utilizing charging current and discharging current as the diagnosis method of insulation degradation with irradiating EPR cables by $^{60}Co-{\gamma}$ rays.

  • Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosimetry for a tooth from an individual exposed is well known as retrospective dosimetry in radiological accidents. A major constraint of the conventional X-band tooth-EPR dosimetry is the necessity to extract the tooth of the exposed patient for dose assessment. In this study, to conduct the dose assessments of exposed patients through part-extraction of tooth enamel, the minimum detectable dose (MDD) of the tooth enamel was evaluated based on the amount of mass. Further, a field test was conducted via intercomparison using various dose assessment methods to verify the feasibility of X-band tooth-EPR dosimetry using the minimum mass of tooth enamel. The intercomparison results demonstrated that effective dose determination via X-band tooth-EPR dosimetry is reliable. Consequently, it was determined that the minimum mass of tooth enamel required to evaluate an absorbed dose above 0.5 Gy is 15 mg. Thus, EPR dosimetry using 15 mg of tooth enamel can be applied in the triage and initial medical response stages for patients exposed during radiological accidents. This approach represents an advancement in managing radiological accidents by offering a more efficient and less invasive method of dose assessment.

Copper(II) Sorption Mechanism on Kaolinite : An EPR and EXAFS Study (캐올리나이트 표면에서의 구리 수착 메카니즘 : 전자상자성공명 및 EXAFS 연구)

  • Copper(II) sorbed on kaolinite (KGa-lb) was studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The sorbed copper(II) had an isotropic EPR signal with $g_{iso}\;=\;2.19$ at room temperature. At 77 K, the isotropic signal converted to an axially symmetric anisotropic signal with $g_{\$\mid$}\;=\;2.40,\;g_{\bot}\;=\;2.08,\;and\;A_{\$\mid$}\;=\;131\;G$. These EPR results suggest that the sorbed copper(II) forms an outer-sphere surface complex with a tetragonally distorted $CuO_{6}$ octahedral structure on the kaolinite. In the sorption measurement, the amount of sorbed copper increased with increasing pH of the solution. However, the intensity of the isotropic EPR line was not directly proportional to the amount of sorbed copper. This discrepancy was resolved by assuming the formation of a surface precipitate at higher pH that is invisible by EPR. The EXAFS data confirmed the existence of the surface precipitate. The best fit for the EXAFS of the sorbed copper showed that each copper on the kaolinite had 6.8 copper neighbors located $3.08\;{\AA}$ from it, in addition to the first shell oxygen neighbors, including 4 equatorial O at $1.96\;{\AA}$ and 2 axial O at $2.31\;{\AA}$. This work shows that the local environment of the copper sorbed on the kaolinite changes as a function of pH and surface loading, and that the EPR and EXAFS are useful in studying such changes.
