  • If LNG is leaked from 9% Ni steel inner tank by damage, LNG is retained by outer concrete tank. Then large tensile stress can be caused at cylindrical bottom of outer tank by temperature difference between outer and inner surface of outer tank. Therefore, in order to reduce the tensile stress is caused by temperature difference, corner-protection is installed with insulation and 9% Ni steel as a second barrier. In this paper, using finite element method, structural analysis was performed for rectangular and circular shape of knuckle and based on the results, fatigue life of welds of corner protection was predicted. As a consequence of structural analysis, safety factor of circular knuckle shows 33% bigger than rectangular one shows, and circular knuckle has 25% bigger fatigue life time than rectangle has. These results can be applied to life time assessment and design optimization in the future.

  • Using beam data and accurate 3D dose model, a study of the spatial dose distribution for various arcs was carried out. The dose dirstibution generated by the accurate dose model could be represented by a simple approximate analytic form which is convenient and very efficient for calculating dose distribution iteratively in the optimization procedure. We developed an empirical cylindrical dose model to compute dose for one full rotational arc or partial rotational arc. After a tedious search for fits to a collection of 200 points of accurate dose data, we found simple formular with 7 parameters search. As a consequence, the programs required approximately less than 1 second to compute dose for one single arc on a 20 by 20 matrix (400 points) using fast approximate dose model. In conclusion the fast approximate dose model give dose distributions similar to the accurate dose model, which makes this fast dose model an attractive alternative to the accurate 3D dose model.

  • Microalgae are receiving an increasing attention because of their potential use as $CO_2$ capture method and/or as feedstock for biofuels production. On the other hand the current microalgae-based technology is still not widespread since it is characterized by technical and economic constraints that hinder its full scale-up. In such contest the growth kinetics of Nannochloris eucaryotum (a relatively unknown marine strain) in batch and semi-batch photobioreactors is quantitatively investigated with the aim of obtaining the corresponding kinetic parameters suitable for process engineering and its optimization. In particular the maximum growth rate was evaluated to be 1.99 $10^{-3}\;h^{-1}$. Half saturation concentrations for nitrates ($K_N$) and phosphates uptake ($K_P$) were evaluated as 5.4 $10^{-4}\;g_N\;L^{-1}$ and 2.5 $10^{-5}\;g_P\;L^{-1}$, respectively. Yield factors for nitrogen ($Y_N$) and phosphorus ($Y_P$) resulted to be 5.9 $10^{-2}\;g_N\;g^{-1}$ biomass and 6.0 $10^{-3}\;g_P\;g^{-1}{_{biomass}}$, respectively. The possibility of using 100% (v/v) $CO_2$ gas as carbon source is also evaluated for the first time in the literature as far as N. eucaryotum is concerned. The strain showed a good adaptability to high concentrations of dissolved $CO_2$ as well as to low pH. The lipid content under 100% $CO_2$ is about 16.16 %wt $wt^{-1}$ and the fatty acid methyl esters composition of the extracted oil is in compliance with the European regulation for quality biodiesel.

  • Ejector system is a device to transport a low-pressure secondary flow by using a high-pressure primary flow. Ejector system is, in general, composed of a primary nozzle, a mixing section, a casing part for suction of secondary flow and a diffuser. It can induce the secondary flow or affect the secondary chamber pressure by both shear stress and pressure drop which are generated in the primary jet boundary. Ejector system is simple in construction and has no moving parts, so it can not only compress and transport a massive capacity of fluid without trouble, but also has little need for maintenance. Ejectors are widely used in a range of applications such as a turbine-based combined-cycle propulsion system and a high altitude test facility for rocket engine, pressure recovery system, desalination plant and ejector ramjet etc. The primary interest of this study is to set up an applicable model and operating conditions for an ejector in the condition of sonic and subsonic, which can be extended to the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Experimental and theoretical investigation on the sonic and subsonic ejectors with a converging-diverging diffuser was carried out. Optimization technique and numerical simulation was adopted for an optimal geometry design and satisfying the required performance at design point of ejector for hydrogen recirculation. Also, some ejectors with a various of nozzle throat and mixing chamber diameter were manufactured precisely and tested for the comparison with the calculation results.

  • This paper applies an optimization algorithm for the elastic truss structures. The acceleration technique utilized in this study is the geometric programming method developed by the Operation Research or the applied methematics. The applicability and the efficiency of the algorithm applied in this study are tested for four different trusses. Test results show that the optimum solutions are obtained after only one or seven iterations which is very small compared with other techniques and no oscillation is needed for the convergency. Test rusults also show that the Geometric Programming Method is also effective algorithm for the convergency of the Optimum Solution in case of only being compared with the number of iteration.

  • The complexity and expensiveness of water resources projects have made optimum operation and design by computer-based techniques of increasing interest in recent years. Water resources problems in real world need many decisions under numerous constraints. In addition there are nonlinearities in the state and return function. This mathematical and technical troublesome must be overcome so that the optimum operation polices are determined. Then traditional dynamic optimization method encountered two major-cruxes: variable discretization and appearance of constraints. Even several recent methods which based on the Differential Dynamic Programming(DDP) have some difficulties in handling of constraints. This paper has presented New DDP which is applicable to multi-reservoir control. It is intended that the method suggested here is superior to abailable alternatives. This belief is supported by analysis and experiments(New DDT does not suffer course of dimensionality and requires no discretization and is able to handle easily all constraints nonlinearity).

  • This paper presents the optimum design methodology for composite wing structure which automatically calculates the safety margin using optimization framework integrating failure modes. Particularly, its framework is possible to optimize sizing procedure to prevent failure mode which has the greatest effect on reducing the sizing time of composite structure. The main failure mode was set as the first ply failure, buckling failure mode, and bolted joint stress field, and the margin was calculated to minimize the weight. The design variable is a laminate sequence database and the responses are strain, buckling, bolted joint stress field. The objective function is the mass of the wing structure. The results of buckling analysis were compared using the finite element model to verify the robustness and reliability of Composite Optimizer.

  • This work presents the application of the DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) methodology to optimizing both the linearity and the sensitivity of the output voltage of a Hall-effect rotary position sensor. To this end, the dimensions and relative positions of a permanent magnet with reference to a Hall sensor are selected as the design factors for a full factorial design. In order to evaluate the output voltage of the rotary position sensor at each run in the experimental design, analytical solutions to the magnetic flux density were obtained using the Biot-Savart law and the relations between the magnetic flux density and the output voltage intrinsic to a Hall sensor. Through measurements of the improved output voltage of the rotary position sensors manufactured using the optimized design factors, the proposed method is shown to be simple and practical.

  • This paper presents a data-fitting technique in which a B-spline hypervolume is used to approximate a given data set of scattered data samples. We describe the implementation of the data structure of a B-spline hypervolume, and we measure its memory size to show that the representation is compact. The proposed technique includes two algorithms. One is for the determination of the knot vectors of a B-spline hypervolume. The other is for the control points, which are determined by solving a linear least-squares minimization problem where the solution is independent of the data-set complexity. The proposed approach is demonstrated with various data-set configurations to reveal its performance in terms of approximation accuracy, memory use, and running time. In addition, we compare our approach with existing methods and present unconstrained optimization examples to show the potential for various applications.

  • The transient response in PDFA(Praseodymium-Doped Fiber Amplifier) is theoretically investigated. The PDFA has the spectral gain band in 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The transient model includes the transient buildup of the population inversion, the pump power, and the signal power and their transient variation along the fiber amplifier. The numerical analysis of transient model can predict the gain saturation, the variation of pump power and the gain as a function of the fiber length. It also shows the gain saturation and recovery effects depending on the pumping rate lead to distortion and saturation in the amplification of optical pulse. The results of numerical analysis, for the case of the Pr ion concentration of 1000ppm and the pump power of 0.5W the gain saturation is obtained 30dB at the length of 5m and the saturation time of upper level is 250 $mutextrm{s}$.
