  • An engineered barrier system (EBS) for the geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) consists of a disposal canister packed with spent fuel, buffer material, backfill material, and gap-filling material. The buffer material fills the space between the canister and the near-field rock, thus serving to restrain the release of radionuclides and protect the canister from groundwater penetration. Furthermore, as significant amounts of heat energy are released from the canister to the surrounding rock, the thermal conductivity of the buffer plays an important role in maintaining the safety of the entire disposal system. Therefore, given the high levels of heat released from disposal canisters, this study measured the thermal conductivities of compacted bentonite buffers from Gyeongju under temperature variations ranging 25 to 80~90℃. There was a 5~20% increase in thermal conductivity as the temperature increased, and the temperature effect increased as the degree of saturation increased.

  • Recently the adenosinetriphosphates have massive highlight due to their high energy source for treat and maintained all the cell mechanism in the individual. When the A. T.P. release the terminal phosphate, produces about 8,000 calories instead of the 3,000 calories from common chemical bonds. The high energy-P bond enables the cell to accumulate a great amount of energy in a very small space and the keep it ready to be used as soon as it is needed. The presence of A.T.P. explains why some important cellular functions such as nerve conduction can go on for some time even with complete inhibition of respiration. In recent years the A.T.P. were used in many clinical field with good effects. In this report was used A.T.P. 20mg+Vit $B_1$ 50mg+20% Dextrose 20㏄ through intravenousely for E.N.T. neurologic patient, such as neurogenic hearing impairment, tinnitus, dizziness, soft palate paralysis. By the injection 40% of neurogenic hearing impairment patients were improved and 62% tinnitus patients were improved and all the soft palate paralysis patient were completely recovered.

  • Steel is a structural material that is inherently noncombustible. On the other hand, it has high thermal conductivity and the strength and stiffness of the material are reduced significantly when exposed to fire or high temperatures. Because the yield strength and modulus of elasticity of steel are reduced by 70% at $350^{\circ}C$ and less than 50% at $600^{\circ}C$, the load-carrying capacity of steel structure at high temperature rapidly lose. To be accepted as a fire-resisting construction, the fire test should be performed at the certificate authority. On the other hand, the fire test on a full-scale structure is limited by time, space, and high-cost. The analytical method was verified by a comparison with the fire test of H-section columns under compression and thermal analysis based on a finite element method using the ABAQUS program, and the numerical analysis method reported in this study was suggested as a complement of an actual fire test.

  • In this article, for the first time, the seismic behavior of elliptic-braced moment resisting frame (ELBRF) is assessed through a laboratory program and numerical analyses of FEM specifically focused on the development of global- and local-type failure mechanisms. The ELBRF as a new lateral braced system, when installed in the middle bay of the frames in the facade of a building, not only causes no problem to the opening space of the facade, but also improves the structural behavior. Quantitative and qualitative investigations were pursued to find out how elliptic braces would affect the failure mechanism of ELBRF structures exposed to seismic action as a nonlinear process. To this aim, an experimental test of a ½ scale single-story single-bay ELBRF specimen under cyclic quasi-static loading was run and the results were compared with those for X-bracing, knee-bracing, K-bracing, and diamond-bracing systems in a story base model. Nonlinear FEM analyses were carried out to evaluate failure mechanism, yield order of components, distribution of plasticity, degradation of structural nonlinear stiffness, distribution of internal forces, and energy dissipation capacity. The test results indicated that the yield of elliptic braces would delay the failure mode of adjacent elliptic columns and thus, help tolerate a significant nonlinear deformation to the point of ultimate failure. Symmetrical behavior, high energy absorption, appropriate stiffness, and high ductility in comparison with the conventional systems are some of the advantages of the proposed system.

  • PURPOSE. This study was to evaluate the effects of bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes as a barrier membrane on guided bone regeneration (GBR) in comparison with those of the resorbable collagen membranes. MATERIALS AND METHODS. BC membranes were fabricated using biomimetic technology. Surface properties were analyzed, Mechanical properties were measured, in vitro cell proliferation test were performed with NIH3T3 cells and in vivo study were performed with rat calvarial defect and histomorphometric analysis was done. The Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon signed rank test was used (${\alpha}<.05$). RESULTS. BC membrane showed significantly higher mechanical properties such as wet tensile strength than collagen membrane and represented a three-dimensional multilayered structure cross-linked by nano-fibers with 60 % porosity. In vitro study, cell adhesion and proliferation were observed on BC membrane. However, morphology of the cells was found to be less differentiated, and the cell proliferation rate was lower than those of the cells on collagen membrane. In vivo study, the grafted BC membrane did not induce inflammatory response, and maintained adequate space for bone regeneration. An amount of new bone formation in defect region loaded with BC membrane was significantly similar to that of collagen membrane application. CONCLUSION. BC membrane has potential to be used as a barrier membrane, and efficacy of the membrane on GBR is comparable to that of collagen membrane.

  • Recently, many research studies have been carried out on the efficiency of light-shelf daylighting systems, especially comparing performance improvements and the limitations of reflective surfaces and their lighting performance. In this study, a crystal face reflective surface is proposed. The objective of the study is to evaluate the lighting performance of a crystal face light-shelf through a performance study. The performance study was carried out in a full scale test-bed in order to calculate the light distribution and energy consumption utilizing the standard indoor illumination as an index. The conclusions of the performance study are as follows. 1) The optimal angle of incidence for daylighting for both the operable flat type light-shelf and the crystal face light-shelf are taken in the natural environment on the dates of the winter and summer solstices, as well as the autumn and spring equinoxes. 2) The application and installation of the crystal face light-shelf can produce a 29.9%~34.3% increase of light distribution within the indoor space. However, the increase of light distribution can also lead to a decrease in the uniformity ratio, a design challenge that should be considered when applying a crystal face light-shelf. 3) It is possible to achieve a 7.98%~13.3% greater reduction in energy consumption when applying a crystal face light-shelf than when applying a flat type light-shelf. The increase in the number of crystal faces should concur with the analysis of the energy reduction. A limitation of the study is that only one predetermined pattern was performance tested for a crystal face light-shelf. In order to carry out further research on crystal face light-shelves, additional performance studies are needed based on alternative patterns and designs.

  • BIPV system is one of the best ways to harness PV module. The BIPV system not only produces electricity, but also acts as a building envelope. Thus, it has the strong point of increasing the economical efficiency by applying the PV modules to the buildings. Bifacial solar cells can convert solar energy to electrical energy from both sides of the module. In addition, it is designed as 3 busbar layout which is the same with ordinary mono-facial soalr cells. Therefore, many of the module manufacturers can easily produce the bifacial solar cells without changing their manufacturing equipment. Moreover, bifacial BIPV system has much potential in building application by utilizing glass to glass structure. However, the performance of bifacial solar cells depends on a variety of factors, ranging from the back surface to surrounding conditions. Therefore, in order to apply bifacial solar cells to buildings, an analysis of bifacial PV module performance should be carried out that includes a consideration of various design elements, and reflects a wide range of installation conditions. As a result it found that the white insulation reflector type can improve the performance of the bifacial BIPV system by 16%, compared to the black insulation reflector type. The performance of the bifacial BIPV was also shown to be influenced by inclination angle, due to changes in both the amount of radiation captured on the front face and the radiation transmitted to the rear face through the transparent space. In this study is limited design condition and installation condition. Accordingly follow-up researches in this part need to be conducted.

  • Underground compressed air energy storage (CAES) system in a lined rock cavern is considered one of the promising large-scale energy storage technologies. In this study, permeabilities of concrete lining block and its construction joint, which are the major components of an air tightness system of the undeground CAES, were measured from a model experiment. From the experiment, it was found that intrinsic permeability of construction joint was larger than that of concrete block by the order scale of $10^1{\sim}10^4$, so that it would be very important to control the quality of construction joints in-situ in order to secure air tightness of storage system. And the permeability of construction joint could be decreased as low as that of the concrete block by pasting an acryl-type adhesive on bonding surfaces. Higher degrees of water saturation of the concrete block resulted in the lower permeability, which is more preferable in the viewpoint of air tightness of storage cavern.
