  • Wireless Sensor Networks consist of small, inexpensive, low-powered sensor nodes that communicate with each other. To achieve a low communication cost in a resource constrained network, a novel concept of signcryption has been applied for secure communication. Signcryption enables a user to perform a digital signature for providing authenticity and public key encryption for providing message confidentiality simultaneously in a single logical step with a lower cost than that of the sign-then-encrypt approach. Ring signcryption maintains the signer's privacy, which is lacking in normal signcryption schemes. Signcryption can provide confidentiality and authenticity without revealing the user's identity of the ring. This paper presents the security notions and an evaluation of an ID-based ring signcryption scheme for wireless sensor networks. The scheme has been proven to be better than the existing schemes. The proposed scheme was found to be secure against adaptive chosen ciphertext ring attacks (IND-IDRSC-CCA2) and secure against an existential forgery for adaptive chosen message attacks (EF-IDRSC-ACMA). The proposed scheme was found to be more efficient than scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks reported by Qi. et al. based on the running time and energy consumption.

  • The Demand Response Market is a nation-wide power and energy management program of electric power demand response operated by KPX (Korea Power eXchange). Therefore, any savings could be determined by KEPCO's AMR(Automatic Meter Reading) data. However, the customers and the service providers participating in the market could not know the real time value due to the 15 minute or even more delayed AMR data communicated. Here, a new concept of a smart box has been introduced and demonstrated to provide the real time saving values compared to the current KEPCO's AMR data approach.

  • The optimal load distribution for two cooperating robots is studied in this paper, and a new solution approach utilizing force ellipsoid is proposed. The load distribution problem is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem with a quadratic cost function. The limit on instantaneous power is considered in the problem formulation as the joint torque constraints. The optimal solution minimizing energy consumption is obtained using the concept of force ellipsoid and the nonlinear optimization theory. The force ellipsoid provides a useful geometrical insight into the load distribution problem. Despite the presence of the joint torque constraints, the optimal solution is obtained almost as a closed form, in which the joint torques are given in terms of a single scalar parameter that can be obtained numerically by solving a scalar equation.

  • This study exploits the data discriminating capability of silhouette statistics, which combines wavelet-based vertical energy threshold technique for the purpose of extracting damage-sensitive features and clustering signals of the same class. This threshold technique allows to first obtain a suitable subset of the extracted or modified features of our data, i.e., good predictor sets should contain features that are strongly correlated to the characteristics of the data without considering the classification method used, although each of these features should be as uncorrelated with each other as possible. The silhouette statistics have been used to assess the quality of clustering by measuring how well an object is assigned to its corresponding cluster. We use this concept for the discriminant power function used in this paper. The simulation results of damage detection in a truss structure show that the approach proposed in this study can be successfully applied for locating both open- and breathing-type damage even in the presence of a considerable amount of process and measurement noise.

  • This paper deals with the application of the concept of POM to analysis of power system behavior and describes a practical method of PRA for KEPCO system. This paper presents not only marginal power flow evaluation of KEPCO system in view point of physical and operation mode by using Physical and Operational Margins (POM Ver. 2.2), which is developed by V&R Energy System Research, but also by using Probabilistic Reliability Assessment (PRA Ver.3.1), which is developed by EPRI. The ability of the method to provide insights on root causes, weak points and regional causes and effects was shown. The approach offers fast and accurate determination of bottlenecks in the transmission network and optimal mitigation measures to alleviate the identified violations.

  • Time-temperature superposition has been studied to determine the long-term fatigue life over millions of cycles for glassy polymers. π le superposition is supposed to make an accelerated lifetime testing (ALT) technique possible. Dog-bone shaped specimens made of carbon filled Polycarbonate (PC) were tested under fatigue, based on the stress-lifetime approach (S-N curve). Fatigue-induced localized yield-like deformation is considered as the defect leading to fatigue and its evolution behavior is characterized by a modified energy activation model in which temperature is considered as fatigue acceleration factor. This model allows the reduced time concept to account for effects of different temperature in short-term fatigue data to determine long-term fatigue life through the use of time-temperature superposition that is applicable under a low frequency and isothermal conditions. The experimental results validated that the proposed technique could be a possible method for accelerated lifetime testing (ALT) of time-dependent polymeric materials.

  • Open ground story (OGS) reinforced concrete (RC) buildings are vulnerable to the complete collapse or severe damages under seismic actions. This study investigates the effectiveness of four different strengthening techniques representing the local and global modifications to improve the seismic performance of a non-ductile RC OGS frame. Steel caging and concrete jacketing methods of column strengthening are considered as the local modification techniques, whereas steel bracing and RC shear wall systems are selected as the global strengthening techniques in this study. Performance-based plastic design (PBPD) approach relying on energy-balance concept has been adopted to determine the required design force demand on the strengthening elements. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses are carried out on the numerical models of study frames to assess the effectiveness of selected strengthening techniques in improving the seismic performance of OGS frame.. Strengthening techniques based on steel braces and RC shear wall significantly reduced the peak interstory drift response of the OGS frame. However, the peak floor acceleration of these strengthened frames is amplified by more than 2.5 times as compared to that of unstrengthened frame. Steel caging technique of column strengthening resulted in a reasonable reduction in the peak interstory drift response without substantial amplification in peak floor acceleration of the OSG frame.

  • Despite the most severe weather and geological conditions, Korean people in earlier times were successful in maintaining sustainable water supplies because they understood the importance of rainwater management, and developed technologies and a philosophy which were needed to live under such circumstances. Recently, the Korean people have suffered frequent incidence of flood damage and drought, and have gradually started to remind themselves of the lessons of the past, which can be described as proactive, multipurpose rainwater management. Most of the problems associated with water and energy can be solved by the integration of rainwater management practices. The concept of multipurpose rainwater management and two examples of its practice are discussed. One is a design for a multipurpose rainwater tank which has been used in a building project, and is based on Korean philosophy. Secondly, a regulation was promulgated recently in Seoul that requires the building of rainwater tanks in new buildings over a certain size. The primary purpose is for the prevention of flooding, but water conservation is a secondary intention. Two examples of proactive rainwater management are discussed, one being public involvement in rainwater management, and the second being the rainwater piggy bank microcredit project. In order to maintain sustainability, to meet the requirements of the Millennium Development Goals, and to be prepared for the effects of climate change, it is expected that multipurpose and proactive rainwater management will be a very effective approach for both developing countries and developed countries. A worldwide network of scientific researchers, as well as a great number of professions, has suggested the promotion of rainwater management.

  • Although a frequency analysis by FFT algorithm has been widely used in the vibration community, this approach has somewhat limited features when an analysist want to see the details of frequency trends because FFT shows only energy contents along frequencies. So the concept of instantaneous frequency that represents the dominant frequency component at each time needs to be introduced. In this paper, to get the instantaneous frequency, two methods are used. Methods using Hilbert transform and evolutionary spectrum are those. One of the problems of estimating instantaneous frequency using Hilbert transform is that it is normally very sensitive to signal to noise ratio(SNR) because of the differentiation. Moving window is applied on the estimation of instantaneous frequency, and instantaneous frequency histogram are used to handle this problem and proved to be very effective. Computer simulations for various signals have been done to understand the characteristics of instantaneous frequency. The usefulness of signal analysis using instantaneous frequency was tested by three simple experiments, which were engine experiment, beam experiment, and car door experiment. The instantaneous frequency analysis is found to be a useful technique to analyze the signals that have time varying frequencies.

  • In this paper a computer program for displacement control method was developed, in which a certain displacement of the structure is increased and the applied loads and another displacements are obtained. To simplify the nonlinear structural analysis, the relationships of moment-curvature were linearized as elasto-softening model for over-reinforced concrete beam and as elasto-plastic-softening model for under-reinforced concrete beam. Since the result of the analysis of reinforced concrete beam depended on the element size beyond elastic zone, the relationship of moment-curvature was modified for each element by using the concept of fracture energy approach. Overall, analytical results accurately predicted the load-displacement behavior of reinforced concrete beams.
