Methods: The participants were 161 parents of elementary school children in the 1st and 4th grades. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, and analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 IBM program. Results: The average times for watching television and using the internet in the children were 11.44 hours and 5.89 hours per week, respectively. Children's time watching television was influenced by parents' time watching television, children's gender (girl), and parents' educational needs. Children's television dependency was influenced by parents' educational needs, parents' time watching television, and parents' age (under 36 years). • The objective of this study is to describe the status of operation of after-school science activities in elementary school and offer suggestions for the activation of such programs by targeting parents who participated in an open class, and examining their recognition of the program. To achieve this, announcement sheets for after-school science activities in 809 elementary schools in Gyeonggi-do were collected to examine the class names, class fees, material costs, and management status of class hours. In addition, 36 parents who participated in an open class were targeted, and their recognition of the program was analyzed using the results of a questionnaire. A draft of the questionnaire was developed by revising and complementing the 2013 customer satisfaction survey of the living science class of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity. The final questionnaire was completed by consulting 1 science education professor and 12 Master's candidates in science education for advice on the validity of the questionnaire content and terminology. The collected data were analyzed using a statistical program. Based on the results of the study, the following suggestions are proposed for the activation of after-school science activities in elementary school. First, the needs of education consumers (parents) should be identified and reflected persistently to activate after-school science activities in elementary school. Second, a science program that reflects the demand and choice of education consumers (parents) needs to be developed for the continuous activation of after-school science activities in elementary school.

  • The allergenic food labeling system for 12 foods has been operated in Korean school food service since 2012. This study was conducted to evaluate the food allergy status of Korean elementary school children's and their parents' perceptions of allergenic food labeling system. The parents of school aged(6-9yr olds) children in Gyeongbuk area were recruited to assist in this survey. Surveys were conducted by 404 parents. The prevalence of food allergy was 18.1%(73 students) and about one-half of the food allergic children had a family history of allergies, in particular, maternal family history. The major symptoms were related to skin and the major allergenic foods were mackerel, eggs, milk, wheat, crab and tomatoes. The parents eliminated the allergenic food from diet of 43.8% of the children with food allergy. Participants had an average knowledge score of 68% correct. The average knowledge score was higher for parents with food allergic children than for parents with intact children(p<.05). Over 61% of the respondents were not satisfied with allergenic food labeling system operated in school food service. The requirements for the allergenic food labeling system were the front-of-package labeling, conspicuous description and insert of warning sign. The parents estimated that the most important effect of the allergenic food labeling system was the improvement of psychological and physical health in children with food allergy. Because the only prevention method for food allergy is the restriction of allergenic food, the institutional device to expand the food labeling to unpackaged food as well as packaged food and to make people trust the food labeling should be prepared.

  • The purpose of this study is to consider the home environment and awareness of elementary school students in the first grade of elementary school, and to find ways to support them. Participants were 31 1st graders in elementary schools nationwide. Data collection was conducted from June 6, 2017 to July 7, 2017. The focus group interview was used as a data collection method for this study. Results were analyzed as 'The Changing family environment that first graders think' and 'First graders' awareness of elementary school'. 'The Changing family environment that first graders think' include 'Changes in language used by parents', 'Changes in how parents and families live', and 'What to do after school'. 'First graders' awareness of elementary school' was analyzed as 'Awareness of Elementary school life', 'Awareness of peers', 'Awareness of homeroom teacher', and 'Awareness of learning'. As the conclusion of this study, we suggest that because the children have more free time than attending kindergarten, they need quality programs and support plans to support their first grade primary adjustment. Also, we propose a common problem facing first-year students: the difficulty of adjusting to study and support for how to study in an easier way.
