  • This study proposed a technique for inverse problem, linear approximation of contact position and loading in single and double meshing of transmission contact element using 2-dimension model considered near the tooth by root stress. Determination of root stress is carried out far the gear tooth by finite element method and boundary element method. Boundary element discretization near contact point is carefully performed to keep high computational accuracy. The predicted results of boundary element method are good accordance with that of finite element method.

  • This paper presents the optimum load-speed diagram evaluation for a linear micromotor, including multitude cantilever piezoelectric bimorphs, briefly. Each microbeam in the mechanism can be actuated in both axial and flexural modes simultaneously. For this design, we consider quasi-static and linear conditions, and a relatively new numerical method called the smoothed finite element method (S-FEM) is introduced here. For this purpose, after finding an optimum volume fraction for piezoelectric layers through a standard numerical method such as quadratic finite element method, the relevant load-speed curves of the optimized micromotor are examined and compared by deterministic topology optimization (DTO) design. In this regard, to avoid the overly stiff behavior in FEM modeling, a numerical method known as the cell-based smoothed finite element method (CS-FEM, as a branch of S-FEM) is applied for our DTO problem. The topology optimization procedure to find the optimal design is implemented using a solid isotropic material with a penalization (SIMP) approximation and a method of moving asymptotes (MMA) optimizer. Because of the higher efficiency and accuracy of S-FEMs with respect to standard FEMs, the main micromotor characteristics of our final DTO design using a softer CS-FEM are substantially improved.

  • Fatigue strength assessments with two types of load carrying fillet weldment under out-of-plane bending load have been carried out by using both hot spot stress and structural stress methods. In this study, a derivation for the structural stress method using shell element models is discussed in detail. Finite element analysis using shell element models have been performed for the assessment of fatigue strength. As a result of the fatigue strength evaluation for load carrying transverse fillet weldment, hot spot stress method is found to be consistent with structural stress method and measurement. Hot spot stress, however, estimated for the load carrying longitudinal fillet weldment exhibit large variation with respect to mesh size and element type while the calculated structural stress for the longitudinal fillet weldment is relatively independent of mesh size. On the other hand, drawbacks and doubts associated with applying the structural stress method such as the guidance of virtual node method have been discussed.

  • In this paper, dynamic response analysis on the ground movement applied traffic load by 2D finite element procedure has been studied. In particular, The paper deal with pointing acceleration method that applied AFIMEX Code as like 2D-FLUSH using equivalent linear method. As the result, it is found that dynamic response analysis by pointing acceleration method expressed ground movement by traffic load exactly.

  • Finite element method is very effective method to simulate the forming processes with good prediction of the deformation behaviour. In this paper, It was focussed on the drawability factors on the square cup deep drawing by PAM-STAMP with using magnesium alloy to reduce car weight as well as to draw much attention from the viewpoint of environmental preservation high rigidity, In order to predict the effect of drawability factors, the relationships between punch load and punch stroke, the relationships between thickness strain and distance, and are used. According to this study, the results of simulation will give engineers good information to access the drawability of square cup deep drawing at warm temperature.

  • The elastic critical load of a slender compression member plays an important role when the proper design of that member is required. For the tapered compression members, however, there are cases when the conventional neutral equililbrium or energy method can't be applied to the determination of critical loads of those members. In this paper, finite element method is applied to the approximate determination of the symmetrically tapered bars. Here in this paper, the bars are assumed to take sinusoidally changing shapes along their axes. The parameters considered in this study are taper parameter, $\alpha$ and the sectional property parameter, m. The computed results by finite element method are represented in the forms of algebraic equations. Regression technique is employed to determine the coefficients of algebraic equations. The critical loads estimated by the proposed algebraic equations coincide fairly well with those of finite element method.

  • This paper is concerned with comparison of the first-order reliability methods applied to the assessment of structural safety. For convenience the reliability methods are divided into two categories : the One can explicitly consider the effects of uncertainties in material and geometric variables on those of load effects, say stresses and displacement in the structural analysis procedure and the other one does not. The first method is commonly termed as the stochastic finite element method(SFEM) or probabilistic finite element method(PFEM) and the second method is termed heroin as the ordinary reliability method to distinct it from the stochastic finite element method in which the structural analysis is carried out just once and the load effects are directly input into the reliability analysis procedure. This is based on the reasonable assumption that the level of uncertainties of load effects is the same as those of load itself. In this paper the above two different reliability method have been applied to the safety assessment of plane frame structures and compared thier results from the view point of their efficiency and usefulness. As lear as results of the present structure models are concerned, it can be said that the ordinary reliability method can give reasonable results when the uncertainties of material and geometric variables are comparatively small, say when less than about 15% and the stochastic finite element method is desired to be applied to the structure in which the COV's are comparatively great, say when greater than about 15%.

  • The column type is used as the sensing element of the load cell to measure the large force in the range of 10$^4$~ 10$^{7}$ N. However. it is not easy to handle the load with large capacity due to its size. It is, therefore, necessary to design a compact load cell with a low aspect ratio. Thus this paper showed the characteristic evaluation of compact load cell with respect to the shape of supporting plate. The supporting plate of the load cell was an annular type with inner(D$_{i}$) and outer(D$_{o}$) diameters. Using the strain distribution obtained from FEM. the supporting plate was designed to get the stable output voltage of the load cell. The three designed supporting plates were manufactured, and the result of characteristic experiment of the load cell, using the 10 MN hydraulic force standard machine, was compared with FEM.M.M.

  • Blades of tidal stream turbines have to sustain many different loads during operation in the underwater environment, so securing their structural safety is a key issue. In this study, we focused on periodic loads due to wave orbital motion and propose a load reduction method with a blade design. The flap of an airplane wing is a well-known structure designed to increase lift, and it can also change the load distribution on the wing through deflection. For this reason, we adopted a passive flap structure for the load reduction and investigated its effectiveness by an analytical method based on the blade element moment theory. Flap torsional stiffness required for the design of the passive flap can be obtained by calculating the flap moment based on the analytic method. Comparison between a flapped and a fixed blade showed the effect of the flap on load reduction in a high amplitude wave condition.

  • The objective of this paper is to apply the load ratio method to the measurement of the crack length of the real scale pipe specimen. The load ratio method was modified and finite element analyses were performed to derive the relationship between the normalized compliance and the normalized crack length for the pipe specimen. In order to measure the crack length, the direct current potential drop method and the modified load ratio method were applied to the pipe test. The applicability of the modified load ratio method was confirmed by comparing the calculated crack length with the measured crack length from the pipe experiment.
