  • This Study attempts to verify the effects of expository and inquiry instruction on learning attitude and academic achievement of health education in elementary school. For the accomplishment of the above purpose, specific problems were formulated as follows: The expository instruction is based on David Ausubel’s Advance Organizers and the inquiry instruction, Richard Suchman’s Inquiry Training in this study. To testify the above research problems, 247 students of six classes were randomly sampled from sixth graders of “Y” elementary school, located in Suwon city. One group was taught by expository instruction method and other group was taught by inquiry instruction method. The measurement tools used in this study were learning attitude test, pre-post academic achievement test, expository teaching-learning sheets and inquiry teaching-learning sheets. The experimental treatments had been lasted for eight weeks from June to October 1996. After the experimental treatments, to testify the effects of the experiment, the pre-test and post-test were administered and the results of the tests were compared by t-test. The conclusions were as follows; 1. There was a significant difference between expository and inquiry instruction(p〈.001). Inquiry instruction was more effective than expository instruction in changing learning attitude. 2. There was a significant difference between expository and inquiry instruction(p〈.001). expository instruction was more effective than Inquiry instruction in changing academic achievement. • This paper compared and contrasted the views of effective mathematics instruction by 223 elementary school teachers and 151 middle school mathematics teachers using a questionnaire with 4 main domains (i.e., curriculum and content, teaching and learning, classroom environment and atmosphere, and assessment) and a total of 48 sub-elements. The analysis of results showed that elementary school teachers put their priority on the curriculum and content domain, while middle school counterparts did on the teaching and learning domain. The teachers commonly agreed with instruction which fosters students' self-directed learning ability, reconstructs the curriculum tailored to students' diverse levels, and establishes appropriate interaction between the teacher and students. However, elementary school teachers agreed more than middle school teachers with regard to the 23 elements related to effective mathematics instruction. In contrast, middle school teachers agreed more than their counterparts as for only 2 elements (instruction fostering mathematical representation and instruction eliciting students' learning motivation). This paper includes suggestions and implications related to Korean teachers' perception of effective mathematics instruction.

  • The study attempted to determine if the effectiveness of bibliographic 'instruction would be different among student groups, divided by grade levels, major areas of study, and the level of library skills posessed before the instruction. The focal point of the investigation was the degree of improvement demonstrated by the changes in mean score of each group after taking bibliographic instruction. Sangmyong Women's University students who have taken the bibliographic instruction course for credit were the subjects of the study. Students' library skills were measured prior to the bibliographic instruction and post-test was followed. And the measured was based on the 'Library skills Test' developed by the Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries. Three hypotheses in the study were tested statistically by ANOVA. The followings are the results of the analysis: (1) There were no significant differences in bibliographic instruction effectiveness among student groups divided by grade levels; (2) There were significant differences (p<.01) in bibliographic instruction effectiveness among student groups divided by major areas of study. Bibliographic instruction was more effective for humanities or social sciences majors than for performing arts or physical education majors; (3) There were significant differences (p<.001) in bibliographic instruction effectiveness among student groups divided by the initial library skills. Obviously, bibliographic instruction was more effective for the students in bottom quartile than those in top quartile or middle quartiles. Finally, limitations of the study, recommendations based on the results and area for future research are briefly examined.

  • The purpose of the present study is to explore effective ways of teaching English grammar, which is geared toward improving students' communicative competence. Grammatical competence is essential to communicative competence. Grammatical knowledge cannot be acquired unconsciously in an EFL environment such as in Korea. Therefore learners should be given grammar instruction. More importantly, they should be instructed in grammar so that they can develop their grammatical abilities which are the foundation of communicative competence. The following is proposed for the grammar instruction placing the focus on improving communicative competence. First, it is effective to explain the form, meaning and pragmatics of a grammatical rule to learners in Korean. Second, learners should be given instruction in grammatical patterns that deals with constructions and meanings together, which can enable them to produce sentences by themselves. Third, it should be taught to understand constructions and meanings on the basis of word orders. Then the following steps of grammar instruction are suggested. In the first step of grammatical instruction, students should be provided with the illustrations of grammatical structures which link communicative functions and grammar. In the second step, learners should be gotten to practice grammatical constructions repeatedly enough to use them unconsciously. Lastly, communicative activities such as description and role plays should be included in grammar instruction to integrate grammar practice and communicative language use.

  • Prospective teachers need to have an opportunity to critically examine their initial perception with regard to effective mathematics instruction during the teacher education period. This study analyzed the perception in relation to good mathematics instruction by a total of 265 prospective teachers from four institutes for elementary teacher education using a survey. The results of this study showed that the pre-service teachers regarded learner, teaching and learning method, selection of content, and construction of curriculum as important for high-quality mathematics instruction. However, they revealed relatively low levels of agreement against the importance of instructional materials, classroom environment and atmosphere, and assessment. On the basis of teachers' perception on each element of effective mathematics instruction, this paper raises issues for discussion and includes some implications for teacher education.
