This study is centered on the application of metaphor theory to math education from the cognitive-linguistic view. This study, at first, introduced what metaphor is, and looked into it from the math-educational view. Furthermore, on the basis of that, this study examined the significance of metaphor to math education, and dealt with its relevance to math education, focusing on the functions that metaphor has. This study says that metaphor has the function of explanation, elaboration and representation. In addition, this study examplifies that using metaphor can be an effective math learning strategy for mathematical concept explanation, mathematical connection and mathematical representation learning.
The notion of metaphor has been increasingly popular in research of mathematics education. In particular, metaphor becomes a useful unit for analysis to provide a profound insight into mathematical reasoning and problem solving. In this context, this paper takes metaphor as an analytic unit to examine the relationship between objectivity and subjectivity in mathematical reasoning. Specifically, the discourse analysis focuses on the code switching between literal language and metaphor in mathematical discourse. It is shown that the linguistic code switching is parallel with the switching between two different kinds of mathematical knowledge, that is, factual knowledge and mathematical imagination, which constitute objectivity and subjectivity in mathematical reasoning. Furthermore, the pattern of the linguistic code switching reveals the dialectical relationship between the two poles of mathematical reasoning. Based on the understanding of the dialectical relationship, this paper provides some educational implications. First, the code-switching highlights diverse aspects of mathematics learning. Learning mathematics is concerned with developing not only technicality but also mathematical creativity. Second, the dialectical relationship between objectivity and subjectivity suggests that teaching and teaming mathematics is socioculturally constructed. Indeed, it is shown that not all metaphors are mathematically appropriated. They should be consistent with the cultural model of a mathematical concept under discussion. In general, this sociocultural perspective on mathematical metaphor highlights the sociocultural organization of teaching and loaming mathematics and provides a theoretical viewpoint to understand epistemological diversities in mathematics classroom.
This study aims to analyze the difficulties encountered in the process of conceptualizing fractions from the perspective of metaphor. To achieve this, metaphors in mathematics education were examined by dividing them into natural conceptualizations through metaphor and their extension to educational metaphors. Subsequently, the difficulties in learning fractions through metaphorical conceptualization were analyzed from three aspects: the integration of multiple metaphors, interference from previously formed grounding metaphors, and the paradoxes of metaphor. Through this analysis, the study highlights the need for careful attention to how metaphors function during fraction learning and aims to provide insights for devising instructional strategies for teaching fractions.
Similarity between concept and concept, principle and principle, theory and theory is known as a strong motivation to mathematical knowledge construction. Metaphor and analogy are reasoning skills based on similarity. These two reasoning skills have been introduced as useful not only for mathematicians but also for students to make meaningful conjectures, by which mathematical knowledge is constructed. However, there has been lack of researches connecting the two reasoning skills. In particular, no research focused on the interplay between the two in didactic transposition. This study investigated the process of knowledge construction by metaphor and analogy and their roles in didactic transposition. In conclusion, three kinds of models using metaphor and analogy in didactic transposition were elaborated.

The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of elementary teachers about educational technology. Educational technology that is embodied at school was the form of "systemic structure" whose components are complex and exert close mutual influence on one another, rather than of "systemic assembly" that relationship of components were well controlled. A qualitative epistemological method was used to look into educational technology instead of existing empirical ones. Metaphor analysis was utilized among various qualitative research methods to find out what elementary teachers thought of educational technology. Six elementary teachers were asked to draw a picture to describe what came into their mind when they heard term of "educational technology," and they were interviewed in depth to check what their pictures meant. As a result, elementary teachers expressed their point of views about educational technology as "a scientific, technical and systemized instrument to stir up the learning interest and joy of students," "an action to mechanically fit together every part of education(curriculum)," "educational technology as a teaching and learning method," and "an integrated and overall system." This finding seemed to have something to do with media theory, teaching and learning theory and system theory that have been used in educational technology. This study was expected to be significance in that it investigated the way of looking at educational technology in the field, and confirmed the close relationship between theory and practice, and finally provided an opportunity to reflect on the ontological nature and epistemological method of educational technology.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the meanings that pre-service secondary physical education teachers attach to learning-centered teaching through metaphor analysis and to examine their perceptions of the application of learning-centered teaching in physical education. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, a survey was conducted to express the perception of learning-centered teaching in metaphors. The data analysis was processed through the process of coding, metaphor classification, determining the unit of analysis, and categorisation of the sample according to the metaphor analysis method. As a result, four major categories of educational needs, educational goals and contents, teaching and learning methods and evaluation, teacher education and roles, and eight content types were derived: lessons for self-actualisation, lessons for preparing for future society, lessons that foster creativity, open and diverse lessons, lessons that stimulate curiosity and interest, lessons that are suitable for individual development and characteristics, lessons that are burdensome to implement, and lessons that require teacher creativity and originality. The results of this study provide implications for the necessity and direction of learning-centered class.
Teacher's practical knowledge is potentially relevant to the teaching practice in his/her classroom. The research explored early childhood teachers' practical knowledge of 'curriculum' via conceptual metaphors. The participants (N=348) completed a prompt, "Curriculum is like A because B" and then the metaphors were analyzed according to the procedure proposed by Moser (2000). The analysis found that 8 themes (i.e. 'educational basis', 'learning opportunity', 'educational material', 'difficulty', 'change', 'pre-determination', 'discordance', and 'reconstruction') were the underlying conceptions signified in those metaphors. The implications regarding early childhood teachers' practical knowledge were discussed on the perspective of post-modern curriculum. Moreover, it recommended the practical knowledge based approach for early childhood teacher education, and transformation of current policy for program evaluation relevant to curriculum conceptualization.
We present an understanding about students' conceptual model of differential equations, based on the discourse data that were collected in a differential equations course at a university in Korea. An interpretive approach is taken to analyze classroom discourse. This paper consists of three main parts. First, we completely analyze the students' use of conceptual metaphor in a university differential equations class. Secondly, we identify conceptual metaphors representing students' conceptual model of differential equations. Finally, we describe the mathematical characteristics of the conceptual metaphors identified in detail. Among other things, this paper reveals that there exists dual aspects of the students' conceptual model of differential equations. In other words, in the differential equations course observed we found that the students very often used two kinds of conceptual metaphor,“machine metaphor”and“fictive motion metaphor”, that have contrastingly different mathematical characteristics. In order to interpret the duality, we take a sociocultural perspective, and this perspective suggests and helps us to realize the significance of understanding of cognitive diversity in mathematics classroom.
This research analyzed mathematical discourse of the students in an RME-based differential equations course at a university in order to investigate the social transformation of the students' conceptual model of differential equations. The analysis focused on the change in the students' use of conceptual metaphor for differential equations and pedagogical factors promoting the change. The analysis shows that discrete and quantitative conceptual model was prevalent in the beginning of the semester However, continuous and qualitative conceptual model emerged through the negotiation of mathematical meaning based on the inquiry of context problems. The participation in the project class has a positive impact on the extension of the students' conceptual model of differential equations and increases the fluency of the students' problem solving in differential equations. Moreover, this paper provides a discussion to identify the pedagogical factors Involved with the transformation of the students' conceptual model. The discussion highlights the sociocultural aspect of teaching and learning of mathematics and provides implications to improve teaching of mathematics in school.

When teachers for the gifted express metaphors about their teaching, they may develop better understanding and conceptualizing of teaching and enable to choose appropriate teaching strategies for optimizing individualized learning of the gifted. Therefore, the purpose of this study includes to explore metaphors about science teachers' teaching for the gifted in middle schools and classify into types of metaphors. The survey was administered and completed survey instruments by 66 science teachers for the gifted at gifted educational institutions affiliated with local offices of education and 18 science teachers at middle schools were analyzed. It was revealed that science teachers for the gifted described seven types of metaphors about their teaching with characteristics of student-centered (counsel, helper, etc.), teacher-centered (judge, captain, etc.), or student-teacher-interacted (painter, nurse, etc.) types. More than 60% of teachers described their teaching as either student-centered or student-teacher-interacted types. However, percentage of teachers for the teacher-centered and power-oriented type was higher for science teachers for the gifted (33%) than science teachers for regular students (22%). It was also found that female science teachers for the gifted showed higher percentage for teacher-centered and power-oriented (35%) than male teachers (28%) and teachers with BS degree showed higher percentage for student-centered and service-oriented type (33%) than teachers with MS degree (27%). In addition biology teachers for the gifted also were appeared to be more teacher-centered and power-oriented type (60%) than physics (21%), chemistry (6%), and earth science (33%).
