  • This study analyzes the effect of macroeconomic indicators such as foreign direct investment (FDI), domestic investment, trade, inflation, unemployment, population, and governance indicators on economic growth and points out the GDP growth rate in 2002- 2019 among ASEAN countries. Data were compiled from the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) and the World Bank, and the effect of variables on GDP was predicted using the pooled ordinary least squares (POLS), fixed effects model (FEM), and random effects model (REM) methods. As a measure of growth, the GDP growth rate has been taken; FDI and domestic investment, trade, inflation, and governance indicators are positively connected and have an influence on economic growth in these ASEAN countries; domestic investment, population, and unemployment have a negative relationship to economic growth. The macroeconomic indicators and institutional stability of the nation have an effect on its economic growth. Comprehensive institutional stability and well-laid macroeconomic policies are required for growth to materialize.

  • Estimating genetic interaction effects in animal genomics would be one of the most challenging studies because the phenotypic variation for economically important traits might be largely explained by interaction effects among multiple nucleotide sequence variants under various environmental exposures. Genetic improvement of economic animals would be expected by understanding multi-locus genetic interaction effects associated with economic traits. Most analyses in animal breeding and genetics, however, have excluded the possibility of genetic interaction effects in their analytical models. This review discusses a historical estimation of the genetic interaction and difficulties in analyzing the interaction effects. Furthermore, two recently developed methods for assessing genetic interactions are introduced to animal genomics. One is the restricted partition method, as a nonparametric grouping-based approach, that iteratively utilizes grouping of genotypes with the smallest difference into a new group, and the other is the Bayesian method that draws inferences about the genetic interaction effects based on their marginal posterior distributions and attains the marginalization of the joint posterior distribution through Gibbs sampling as a Markov chain Monte Carlo. Further developing appropriate and efficient methods for assessing genetic interactions would be urgent to achieve accurate understanding of genetic architecture for complex traits of economic animals.

  • Social capital theory provides a robust framework for analyzing economic well being. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of social capital on the economic satisfaction of retirees in Korea. The data from the first wave of KLoSA(Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging) were used(n=1,628). SPSS 12.0 was used for descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The major findings were as follows: First, after controlling for gender, age, region, housing tenure, and personal income, the social capital of the retirees, including cognitive social capital(trust and reciprocity) and structural social capital(emotional and economic familial support, and a well-developed social network), contributes to increases in their economic well-being. Second, the degree of effect social capital has on well-being varied by gender and age; the effect was also different according to gender, regardless of the person's age. These empirical results provide a basis for the institution of policies that help bolster economic wellbeing for retirees by creating conditions that increase social capital in this group.

  • Purpose - During a reform period lasting 30 years, the Blue Economic Zone (BEZ) in the Shandong Peninsula has made progress in attracting foreign investment, and has acquired the foreign direct investment (FDI) essential for economic growth. It is therefore important to conduct a proactive and systematic study of FDI in the BEZ. Research design, data, methodology - This dissertation discusses the contribution of FDI on economic growth, from both a theoretical and empirical perspective. Taking seven core cities for study, statistics and econometrics are used, and panel data are used to validate FDI contribution to import and export in the BEZ. Results- FDI was found to exert both positive and negative influences on the imports and exports of the BEZ. In other words, the research findings are consistent with Trade Generated and Inverse Trade Generated theories put forward by Kojima and Mundell, among other researchers mentioned earlier in this paper. Further, FDI has greatly increased imports and exports for the BEZ. Conclusions - According to the results of this empirical study on local investment environment optimization, FDI plays an important role in foreign trade. This dissertation puts forward recommendations on using FDI to better promote economic growth in the BEZ.

  • This study is aimed at identifying the socio-economic effects of storage of ginger in artificial caves. The gingers stored in artificial caves in Seochun, 12 sampled areas, were surveyed to get information on the socio-economic effects. The surveyed data were processed by TSP, Qbasic and B/C Ratio computer programs and analyzed the decision making criteria such as B/C ratio, NPV and IRR. The socio-economic effects of the storages of the gingers are as follows. 1. The storage benefits per ton was showed as 184,050won. 2. Considering 10% of the opportunity cost of capital, the uper limits of investments for the cave storages was analyzed as 6,784 thousand won for ginger. 3. The investment of the natural cave storages was revealed economically feasible considering the decision making criteria as B/C ratio = 1.33, NPV = 35.059 thousand won and IRR = more than 100%. The other socio-economic effects of the ginger storages was expected as ; 1. The cave storages will contribute to increase consumer's and producer's welfare through the control of supply and demand and price stability. 2. Long-term storage of ginger without damaging quality and grades will be made on account of the storage conditions as relatively low temperature, high humidity and indifferent affects from the outside climate. 3. Utilization of the underground space, the caves, for storage will maximize the land use and the sustainable environment considering the mountainous area, two third of the total national land area. 4. Construction costs of the underground storage facilities as caves are cheaper than the ground storage facilities by 15 to 20% in general. In conclusion, the underground space like natural and artificial caves are considered the most suitable for storage of ginger on account of the storage conditions as temperature, humidity and blocking the sun light. Accordingly a study on convenient utilization of new development of artificial caves should be made considering transportation and input-output of the farms. Financial support of the government should be institutionally rearranged for the successful implementation of storing farm products like ginger in natural and man-made caves.
