  • There are numerous plant and animal species which are adapted to the conditioins of the urban environment. The objectie of landscape and nature conservation in cities can be considered as the perservation of these organisms as the basis for a direct contact between urban dwellers and the landscape elements. However, after 1980 in Korea, green and biotope oases started to develop in the center of the urban area, from which the surrounding population benefited, at least indirectly. Thus urban biotope mapping and biotope informatioin system as a specialized tool of urban ecological landscape planning will make clear the orientation for the preservation of species and renaturalizing measures. The results are as follows : 1) Biotope types in the study area were separated to 21 biotope. 2) The written description of the biotopes took place on the computerized forms. The basis for the uniform inclusion and description of all biotopes surveyed was a codeplan. Additional details were included on the urban biotope mapping. 3) The evaluation of the mapped biotopes was completed to the following aspect, namely " species diversity and biotope conservation value" and "nature experience value". 4) UBM and BIS represent an important basis for decision aid for the city administration within the context of the ecological urban and landscape planning process. 5) The methodology of UBM and BIS in this study area could be extended to whole urban area.to whole urban area.

  • This study explored how the elementary schools provided proper interior environments to the students in terms of ecological aspects. 14 cases-7 in Busan and 7 in Osaka which were newly built or remodelled since 2000 were selected. These schools were analyzed based on the eco-school guideline suggested In the former study. The guideline categorizes into three parts: 1) energy efficiency related with lighting, ventilation, heating and insulation, 2) greening, 3) sustainability including recycling water system and use of environmentally friendly materials. The results showed that Korean schools require more systematic planning for natural lighting, ventilation, Insulation, greening and new water system while Japanese schools need use of environmentally friendly materials and consideration for natural lighting, insulation and interior greening. Especially, natural lighting and natural ventilation through roof window, atrium, wind tower and use of natural insulation and blind window system should be basically considered at the Initial planning. Also, this study reveals that ecological approach including greening and natural lighting with various architectural form should be applied in future elementary school design to make the school environment more agreeable and economical.

  • The purpose of this research was influenced by the historical background of Japanese modern architecture by the circulation of Kuma Kengo's architectural works and he wanted to look at the values and directions he was pursuing and how they were expressed in his works. The results of the review are summarized as follows. First, metabolism was developed as a reaction of modernism in modern architecture, focusing on growth through infinite reproduction by looking at architecture and cities as organisms and by using unit space as cells. Kuma Kengo, on the other hand, argues that focusing on the possibility of decimation of unit members by sequencing the elements that make up the space smaller than the unit space is closer to an ecological architecture. Second, what Kuma Kengo says is "erase the architecture" that is naturally related to the environment and disappears when its use is exhausted. His argument is expressed in individual architectural works through 'visual erase', 'particle painting of materials' and 'independence through dependency.' Through this, Kuma Kengo's ecological architectural languages were influenced by the ecological causes of metabolism, but they differed from the perspective of seeing architectural circulation as an organism. If metabolism was intended to realize circulation with growth potential based on the module of unit space, Kuma Kengo sought to implement circulation with the extinction of the unit members of space.

  • Barnea manilensis is a bivalve which bores soft rocks, such as, limestone or mudstone in the low intertidal zone. They make burrows which have narrow entrances and wide interiors and live in these burrows for a lifetime. In this study, the morphology and the microstructure of the valve of rock-boring clam B. manilensis were observed using a stereoscopic microscope and FE-SEM, respectively. The chemical composition of specific part of the valve was assessed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. 3D modeling and structural dynamic analysis were used to simulate the boring behavior of B. manilensis. Microscopy results showed that the valve was asymmetric with plow-like spikes which were located on the anterior surface of the valve and were distributed in a specific direction. The anterior parts of the valve were thicker than the posterior parts. EDS results indicated that the valve mainly consisted of calcium carbonate, while metal elements, such as, Al, Si, Mn, Fe, and Mg were detected on the outer surface of the anterior spikes. It was assumed that the metal elements increased the strength of the valve, thus helping the B. manilensis to bore sediment. The simulation showed that spikes located on the anterior part of the valve received a load at all angles. It was suggested that the anterior part of the shell received the load while drilling rocks. The boring mechanism using the amorphous valve of B. manilensis is expected to be used as basic data to devise an efficient drilling mechanism.

  • Sustainable design is getting to be controversial issue in all industries over the world particularly, in architecture as the amount of energy usage in architecture occupies 40%. Therefore, it is essential to make the standard for the sustainable design. In order to construct the sustainable design, firstly it should be considered that sustainable design elements based on natural resources to increase building energy efficiency is established and classified. The method of sustainable design divides into passive design and active design. Passive design method should be examined with active one simultaneously for more efficient usage of energy. Next, the study is followed how the sustainable design elements is adopted in buildings through the comparison of cases study of domestic and oversea. The result of case study shows similar adoption of sustainable design elements between oversea and domestic. However, the difference is shown in the building orientation and shape and the window size and position in Solar energy as well as high performance structure in Heat energy. These elements are the most significant elements in order to reduce energy load. In oversea, sustainable design is generated by architects, a client, and consultants based on the close cooperation in the beginning of early design phase before deciding building shape and envelope while in the domestic field adoption for sustainable design is conducted after deciding building shape and material. In order to design sustainable architecture more study is necessary in early stage for Zero Carbon and reducing building energy load through relation with specialists, a client and architects.

  • Environment problem has proposed in the world at large, the desire for environment conservation and one's value change which lay emphasis on lasting human sensibility are increasing. Constant human mind and ecology centered in space is presenting as future space design substitute plan which is based on fundamental material quality in the space such as environment and human ,naturalist or Green Design, pro-environment construction, sense design and etc. So, we intend to anthropocentric value and get out of satisfaction of function as the past physical environment equipment which is applied the elements of ecology based on the organized body and interaction with human. A form of sensitive space is divided into sentient space, expressing method and material, change of space according to the flow of time, and is expressed in a more segmented form of sensuality by being replaced into a new sensitive space through transaction with human, who occupy within the space. The space embodiment which is satisfied human sense regards as alternative plan intention for the future, through two subjects relativity between the elements of ecology and sense, we will find the influence of sense as each space trait of the elements of ecology, examine sense form in the space with the synthetic summary. It is significant presentation for the lasting space based on anthropocentric delightfulness as the design which moves human mind while designing the space for this pattern of sense space.

  • Dry and wet deposition is an impertant removal mechanism of the amobient aerosol in the atmospheric environment. Since the deposition flut provides adverse impacts on various encironmental media including aquatic and ecological system as well as human health, it is essential to quantitatively estimate the removal fluxes of many air pollutants. Thus, the purposes of this experimental study are to investigate seasonal deposition flux variations of the total dustfall and various inorganic elements in the local ambient air and then to finally estimate their dry deposition velocities. To perform the study, the total of 90 dustfall samples were collected from January, 1994 thru February, 1995 in 5 different cities of Korea including Seoul, Suwon, Daejon, Kwangju, and Kangrung. Each sample was analyzed by an AAS and an ICP to determine the quantities of the 11 inorganic elements, such as Zn, Cd, Cr, K, Na, Pb, Ca, Fe, Mn, Mi, and Cu. As results, deposition fluxes, soluble/insoluble fractions, and deposition velocities for each element were extensively investigated. The resulting dry deposition velocities of some elements in Suwon were estimated by ranges of 0.57 .sim. 0.87 cm/sec for Zn, 0.35 .sim. 0.45 cm/sec for Pb, 1.25 .sim. 3.52 cm/sec for Ca, 0.21 .sim. 0.48 cm/sec for Fe, 0.95 .sim. 9.31 cm/sec for Mn, and 2.08 cm/sec for Cu.

  • A window increases the lighting quality of a space by allowing daylight into the space, and maintains visual contact with the outside. Moreover, the window with a preferred view provides many benefits such as psychological satisfaction, occupants' health and improved environmental quality. This study aimed to investigate how view elements and window luminance influence occupants' seating preference in a living room. The experiment was carried out in a mock-up model with thirty-two subjects (17 men and 15 women). The nine seating positions in a living room have different view such as natural view (trees or sky) and man-made view (paving and roof top). Subjects were asked to select a position in the room where they felt most visual comfort. Simultaneously Photolux 2.1 software was used to analyze the window luminance. The experiment results indicated that subjects prefer to be seated near a window and feel comfort in a seating overlooking the trees and sky. This would indicate that the natural elements of the view and a distance to the window affect seating preference to the occupants.

  • Limited fossil fuels and unstable energy supply are considered as one of the critical problems in architecture requiring large amounts of energy. In order to this challenge, environment-friendly architecture design is required. Clear data should be prepared to apply solar energy to architecture aggressively and properly. This study used FS statistical analysis data regarding average daily solar radiation of Seoul observed over 20 years to find out standard year and standard daily solar radiation. This study also aims to compare and evaluate an appropriate method of selecting a standard year which is too close to measurement value through comparison and analysis with daily solar radiation acquired by applying overseas researchers' suggesting weight factor. As a result, the data nearest to measurement value of daily solar radiation was UK CIBSE TRY(TYPE 2) displaying 0.100in t-statistic index. For UK CIBSE TRY(TYPE 2), weight factor was applied to three climatic elements except relative humidity. TYPE 1 and TYPE 3 recorded 0.343 and 0.367, respectively, showing higher record of t-statistic than TYPE 2. TYPE 1 was calculated through FS statistical value of single data about daily solar radiation with other climatic elements excluded. For TYPE 3, relative humidity was added to TYPE 2. In particular, since TYPE 2 was closer to the measurement value compared to the others, it is necessary to consider relationship with other climate elements if other climate elements are added.
