Dams are inevitably planned to be built on thick overburden with high permeability and deformability. The connection part between concrete cut-off wall in overburden and earth core in dam body is not only a key part of the anti-seepage system, but also a weak position. Large uneven settlement will be aroused at the concoction part. However, the interaction behavior and the scope of the connection part cannot be determined effectively. In this paper, numerical analysis of a high earth core dam built on thick overburden was carried out with large deformation FE method. The mechanical behavior of the connection part was detail studied. It can be drawn that there is little differences in dam integral deformation for different analysis method, but big differences were found at the connection part. The large deformation analysis method can reasonably describe the process that concrete wall penetrates into soil. The high plasticity clay has stronger ability to adapt to large uneven deformation which can reduce stress level, and stress state of concrete wall is also improved. The scope of high plasticity clay zone in the connection part can be determined according to stress level of soils and penetration depth of concrete wall.
Internal erosion around pipes can lead to the failure of earth dams through various mechanisms. This study investigates the displacement patterns in earth dam models under three different failure modes due to internal erosion, using digital image correlation (DIC) methods. Three failure modes—erosion along a pipe (FM1), pipe leakage leading to soil erosion (FM2), and erosion in a pipe due to defects (FM3)—are analyzed using two- and three-dimensional image- processing techniques. The internal displacement of the cross-sectional area and the surface displacement of the downstream slope in the dam models are monitored using an image acquisition system. Physical model tests reveal that FM1 exhibits significant displacement on the upper surface of the downstream slope, FM2 shows focused displacement around the pipe defect, and FM3 demonstrates increased displacement on the upstream slope. The variations in internal and surface displacements with time depend on the segmented area and failure mode. Analyzing the relationships between internal and surface displacements using Pearson correlation coefficients reveals various displacement patterns for the segmented areas and failure modes. Therefore, the image-based characterization methods presented in this study may be useful for analyzing the displacement distribution and behavior of earth dams around pipes, and further, for understanding and predicting their failure mechanisms.
Gradual failure of an earth dam is caused by piping or overtopping. In this gradual failure, a breach will form and grow gradually under the erosive action of the waters. The process involved during an earth dam failure is very dynamic and complicated. The physical model of Fread and mathmatical model of Singh and Scarlatos are verified and compared in this study. Fread's model(BREACH) simulates dam failure well when sufficient data are given, and Singh and Scarlatos' model simulates it appoximately with a few simple data.

In this study, 1-g shaking table tests on the model of CFR(Concrete-Face Rockfill) type "D" dam in operation and the model of virtual ECRD(Earth Core Rockfill Dam) of which static stability is about the same compared to the model of CFRD were carried out. The purpose of this study is to compare the seismic performance of CFRD and ECRD from the analysis of model test results. Displacement response behavior of the dam was examined through the measurement of vertical and horizontal displacement of model dam crest. Also, amplification characteristics of accelerometers installed with dam height were examined through the measurement of acceleration with dam height. Also, in the case of ECRD, patterns of excess pore pressure generation with dam height were examined. From the test results, it was found that accelerations of dam crest of CFRD and ECRD were amplified about 1.52 times and 2 times compared to the accelerations of dam bottom, respectively. amplification was outstanding at three quarters of dam height from the bottom of dam. This phenomenon was outstanding in case of ECRD. And it was estimated that vertical and horizontal displacement of prototype dam of CFRD were 6.8cm (0.1% of dam height) and 12.3cm (0.2% of dam height), respectively. Also, it was estimated that vertical and horizontal displacement of prototype dam of ECRD were 4.3cm (0.1% of dam height) and 5.5cm (0.11% of dam height), respectively.
The sinkhole and leakage in dam core were detected at one of earth fill dams in Korea. The damage areas in the core of the dam were repaired by compaction grouting method. This study is to evaluate compaction grouting activity by in-situ and laboratory experiments before, during and after the remedial work. The intensive site investigation and geophysical survey were conducted during and after the compaction grouting work. The compaction grouting work was carried out for the damaged dam core between June 16 and August 24, 2000. The leakage reduction generally occurred in the core of the dam after the remedial work. The use of compaction grouting was considered the proper countermeasures for repairing the damaged dam. It shows that the loose or voided zones have been properly filled and the leakage has been reduced by about 96% of that before the treatment of the remedial work performed at dam core by compaction grouting.
Seismic vulnerability assessment is a useful tool for rational safety analysis and planning of large and complex structural systems; it can deal with the effects of uncertainties on the performance of significant structural systems. In this study, an efficient dynamic reliability approach, probability density evolution methodology (PDEM), is proposed for seismic vulnerability analysis of earth dams. The PDEM provides the failure probability of different limit states for various levels of ground motion intensity as well as the mean value, standard deviation and probability density function of the performance metric of the earth dam. Combining the seismic reliability with three different performance levels related to the displacement of the earth dam, the seismic fragility curves are constructed without them being limited to a specific functional form. Furthermore, considering the seismic fragility analysis is a significant procedure in the seismic probabilistic risk assessment of structures, the seismic vulnerability results obtained by the dynamic reliability approach are combined with the results of probabilistic seismic hazard and seismic loss analysis to present and address the PDEM-based seismic probabilistic risk assessment framework by a simulated case study of an earth dam.
In this study finite element analysis using hyperbolic model was performed to predict the characteristics of stress-strain behaviour on concrete face earth dam (CFED : a tentative name) raised with coarse-grained materials corresponding to the face slab bedding zone of concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD). The results of finite element analysis were compared with field monitoring data, and the comparison showed a good agreement. And, the analysis results including locus of maximum displacement, maximum stress, stress concentration, and irregular load transfer would be used to devise rational field monitoring schemes for construction management and quality control during construction of CFED.

This study was carried out for the settlement and camber of earth dam by the changes of the density. The testing material was taken five kinds of Soil used as banking material and it was compacted by 100, 95, 90, 85 and 80% compaction degree. The results of the settlement of earth dam whose height ranges from 10m to 50m are as follows. 1.The more the fine particle (n) increases, the higher the liquid limit (WL) and the lower the dry density (rd) becomes as follows; rd=2. 22-0. 0052n (gr/cm$_3$) rd=2. 394-0. 0164WL rd=2. 185-(5. 8n-2. 5WL)X10-$_3$ 2. The higher the optimum moisture content (Wo) becomes, the lower the density becomes as follows; rt,=2. 68-0. 028Wo rd=2. 578-0. 04Wo 3. 3.Most of the consolidation occurs immediately by loading and the more the fine particle increases, the lower the coefficient of consolidation becomes. 4.The more the fine particle increases and lower the compaction degree (D) becomes, the lower the pre-consolidation load (Pc) becomes but on the contrary the compression index (Cc) becomes higher. Those equation is as follows. Pc=3. 32-(4. 3n-3. 0D) X10-2 (kg/cm$^2$) Cc=0. 41+(1. 33n-4. 44D) X10-$^3$ 5.The more the consolidation load (P) increases, the lower the coefficient of volume change (mv) becomes with mv=ap-b, the higher the consolidation ratio (u) becomes with U= (0. 6~1. 35)PO.4 6.The more the fine particle (n) increases, the more the settlement of dam occurs with U=anb and 60-80% of the settlement occurs under construction. 7.The camber of dam has higher value in condition that has more fine particle, poorer compaction and higher height of dam. In the dam construction about twice value of table 7 is required for dam safety.
Temperature variation according to space and time on the inner parts of engineering constructions(e.g.: dam, slope) can be a basic information for diagnosing their safety problem. In general, as constructions become superannuated, structural deformation(e.g.: cracks, defects) could be occurred by various factors. Seepage or leakage of water through these cracks or defects in old dams will directly cause temperature anomaly. Groundwater level also can be easily observed by abrupt change of temperature on the level. This study shows that the position of seepage or leakage in dam body can be detected by multi-channel temperature monitoring using thermal line sensor. For this, diverse temperature monitoring experiments for a leakage physical model were performed in the laboratory. In field application of an old earth fill dam, temperature variations for water depth and for inner parts of boreholes located at downstream slope were measured. Temperature monitoring results for a long time at the bottom of downstream slope of the dam showed the possibility that temperature monitoring can provide the synthetic information about flowing path and quantity of seepage of leakage in dam body.

The objective of this study is to estimate shear wave velocity of earth dam materials using artificially generated vibration from blasting events and to verify its applicability. In this study, the artificial blasting and vibration monitoring were carried out at the site adjacent to Seongdeok dam, which is the first blasting test for an existing dam in Korea. The vibrations were induced by 4 different types of blasting with various depths of blasting boreholes and explosive charge weights. During the tests, the acceleration time histories were recorded at the bedrock adjacent to the explosion and the crest of the dam. From frequency analyses of acceleration histories measured at the crest, the fundamental frequency of the target dam could be evaluated. Numerical analyses varying shear moduli of earth fill zone were carried out using the acceleration histories measured at the bedrock as input ground motions. From the comparison between the fundamental frequencies calculated by numerical analyses and measured records, the shear wave velocities with depth, which are closely related to shear moduli, could be determined. It is found that the effect of different blasting types on shear wave velocity estimation for the target dam materials is negligible and the shear wave velocity can be consistently evaluated. Furthermore, comparing the shear wave velocity with the previous researchers' empirical relationships, the applicability of suggested method is verified. Therefore, in case that the earthquake record is not available, the shear wave velocity of earth dam materials can be reasonably evaluated if blasting vibration test is allowed at the site adjacent to the dam.
