  • It is known that the human stature and its related dimensions generally increase until the late teens or early twenties, remain relatively constant throughout early adulthood, and decline from early-to-middle adulthood into old age. However, there is exception that the length of the human ears, which continue to grow throughout life. In this study, 600 Korean male and female subjects aging from 17 to 89 were selected. Four different points of external ears including Pinna length, ear connection point length, Concha length, and Lobule thickness were measured along with other relative subjects' demographic data(e.g., age, stature, weight) to determine the relationship among these obtained data. The results showed that the age, sex, and different ethnic populations were functions of ear dimensions similar to the human stature. For example, the Pinna length increases as the age increases(r= 0.689, p<0.00l). The primary objective of this study was thus to provide anthropometric dimensions of Korean ear for the product designers and recommend the appropriate product design solutions in relation to human ear. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that the continuing growth of the human body parts should be considered in the application of anthropometric data to the design of the things especially for human use.

  • Contact dermatitis is induced by allergy response from a lot of chemical substances brought on by environmental contamination. In this study, we investigated allergy prevention effect of baicalein which is Scutellaria radix extract. Scutellaria radix is the dried roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Labiatae). It has been used in oriental traditional medicine for treatment of fever, diarrhea and inflammation. We have induced allergy by PCL after oral administration of 0 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg baicalein dose for 8 times during 8 days in BALB/c mice and measured ear thickness, IgE level, histamine level, mast cell number and histopathological changes. The ear thickness of the 100 mg/kg baicalein group was thinner than that of the 0 mg/kg baicalein group. IgE level and histamine level of the 100 mg/kg baicalein group were lower than those of 0 mg/kg baicalein group. The number of mast cells of 0 mg/kg baicalein group more than that of 100 mg/kg baicalein group in the ear tissue. In addition, intradermal edema with prominent inflammatory cell infiltration was observed at 0 mg/kg baicalein group more than 100 mg/kg baicalein group in the ear tissue. These results suggest that baicalein has allergy prevention effect in BALB/c mice.

  • In order to provide good germplasm for developing good corn hybrids, a total of 948 Korean indigenous corn lines were collected from various parts of country and major morphological characterstics of ears were investigated. The results obtained were as follows; 1) Ear Type; From the east-north mountaionus region where more than 80% of total corn production is practiced, cylinder (type I) or similar types to cylinder corn were collected, and from the southern plain region, where rather small scales of corn is grown, cone type (type IV) or similar types to cone were prevalent. 2) Kernel color; In the ear colors of all the indigenous corn lines collected from ten regions, ears with mono color were 54.4%, ears with two color mixed were 39.0% and ears with three or more color mixed were 6.6%. In northern mountainous region, region A and region I, ear color was mostly white or white plus other colors, while in other regions ear color was yellow or yellow plus other colors. 3) Denting; Dent type was only 4.3% of Korean indigenous corn lines collected, and others were flint type. Dent type was collected from northern regions, where foreign corn varieties were introduced and grown. 4) Ear row number; Ear row numbers of indigenous corn lines collected were 12 to 16. There was no significant differences among the ear row numbers in a ear ciassified by regions. However, it was observed that ear row number was closely related to kernel size. For instance, the ears with 24 ear-rows were the smallest in kernel size. 5) Quality of starch; 70.9% of the indigenous corn lines collected were kernels with hard starch. Corn with soft starch was 26.0% and medium type was 3.1%. In region A and region I, where lot of corn is grown, corn with hard starch was more frequently collected. 6) Pop corn and waxy corn; In all the indigenous corn lines collected, popcorn was distributed uniformly through the regions except region I, and waxy corn was found more in the northern mountainous region. 7) Ear length; The mean ear length of indigenous corn lines collected was 13cm. In region A and region I ear length was larger than that in other regions. 8) Ear diameter; The mean ear diameter of indigenous corn lines collected was 3.3cm. In region A and region I ear diameter was larger than that in other regions. 9) Kernel length, kernel width and kernel thickness; The mean kernel length, kernel width and kernel thickness of indigenous corn lines collected were 0.82cm, 0.42cm, and 0.78cm, respectively. The kernel size in the region A and region I was larger than that in other regions. 10) Ear weight; The mean ear weight of indigenous corn lines collected was 58.04gr. Ear weight was remarkably heavier in region A and region I. The heaviest ear weighed 330gr, and the lightest ear weighed 5 gr. 11) Kernel weight of a ear and 100 kernel weight; Kernel weight of a ear and 100 kernel of indigenous corn lines collected were 47.07gr and 15.07gr, respectively. Kernel weights and 100 kernel weights were much heavier in region A and region I than other regions.

  • Background: The aim of this study is to develop a two-stage training module using radish and swine scapular cartilage for carving ear cartilage. Methods: In the first stage, white radish was cut in 3-6 mm thick slices. The ear cartilage framework was carved using a graver and the helix and antihelix were fixed with pins. In the second stage, swine scapular cartilage was obtained. The thickness varied 3-6 mm. The ear cartilage framework was made. And triangular fossa and scaphoid fossa were carved with graver. A curvilinear cartilage for helix was assembled to the framework by pin fixing. Six participants were recruited for an ear reconstruction training workshop and figures of the cartilage framework were provided. Participants were asked answer the pre-workshop questionnaire and post-workshop questionnaire on a Likert scale to rate their satisfaction with the outcome. Results: On the pre-workshop questionnaire, participants indicated that they did not have sufficient knowledge and skill for fabricating the ear cartilage framework (1.5±0.5 using white radish; 1.3±0.5 using swine scapular cartilage). On the post-workshop questionnaire, participants responded that they had learned useful knowledge from this workshop, reflecting a significant improvement (3.8±1.0 using white radish; 4.0±1.1 using swine scapular cartilage). They also indicated that they had become somewhat confident in this skill (4.2±0.8 using white radish; 4.3±0.5 using swine scapular cartilage. The participants generally found the workshop satisfactory (practically helpful, 4.7±0.5; knowledge improved, 4.8±0.4; satisfied with course, 4.5±0.5; would recommend to others, 4.8±0.4). Conclusion: This model can be useful for ear reconstruction training for medical personnel.

  • The effect of Picrorrhiza Rhizoma (PR) aqueous extracts were evaluated on 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced contact dermatitis, type I allergic model. Contact dermatitis was induced by sensitization with dinitrophenyl-derivatized ovalbumin (DNP-OVA) and DNFB challenge as antigen. Three different concentrations of PR extracts (300,150 and 75mg/kg) were orally administered to DNP-OVA sensitization mice once a day for 7 days with reference materials; dexamethasone (15mg/kg, intraperitoneal treatment). End of 7 days oral administration of PR extracts or intraperitoneal treatment of dexamethasone, the changes on the edematous changes and scratching behavior were measured. Immediate after DNFB challenge on ear or paw of DNP-OVA sensitized mice, increases of ear and paw thicknesses and weights were detected with anterior ear skin (dermis to epidermis) thickness and paw scratching behavior increases. However, these DNFB-induced increases on ear and paw thicknesses, weights and scratching behaviors were decreased by treatment of all three different dosages of PR extracts and dexamethasone, respectively. In addition, the increases of anterior skin thicknesses were also dramatically inhibited by treatment of all three different dosages of PR extracts and dexamethasone at histopathological observations. The results obtained in this study suggest that oral treatment of PR extracts also has relatively favorable effects on allergic dermatitis.

  • Samyoyongantang (SMY), a herbal medicine, has been used as cure for gangrene. To evaluate anti-inflammatory effect of samyoyongantang, we treated samyoyongantang extract in animal model system induced contact hypersensitivity. Contact hypersensitivity, a local inflammatory response of the skin, was induced by 1% DNCB on the right ear of BALB/c mouse. Samyoyongantang was prepared as water extract and administrated everyday for 2 weeks per oral. A right ear of mouse was potently swelled by 1% of DNCB treatm ent, but a mouse ear thickness was significantly reduced by samyoyongantang after 2 we eks treatment. Samyoyongantang reduced IgG in serum obtained from blood of 1 % DNCB-treated mouse. IgE in serum was not changed by samyoyongantang treatment. From these results, anti-inflammatory effect of samyoyongantang, especially reduction of ear swell ing, might be partly due to reduction of IgG in serum.

  • Bee venom (BV), well known as a traditional Oriental medicine, has been widely used in the treatment of some immune-related diseases. However, the anti-allergic effect of BV have not been reported. In this study, we investigated the antiallergic effect of BV on triphasic cutaneous reaction (TpCR) and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA). Our results indicated that BV suppress ear swelling and vascular permeability on IgE mediated type I hypersensitivity response. Increase in ear thickness was significantly inhibited by BV in this model. BV also blocked the infiltration of immune cells into the ear. Moreover, BV suppressed expression of HDAC3, Tryptase, MCP-1 in ear tissue. These results demonstrated that BV has a suppressive effect on allergic reaction.
