  • This in vitro study monitored MMP-8 production on PMN by stimulated with the following three groups; Sonicated extracts of E. faecalis (SEF), SEF treated with $Ca(OH)_2$ (12.5mg/ml) for 7 days, and lipopolysac-charides(LPS) of E. coli. The level of MMP-8 in each group was immediately measured by ELISA. The data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test. In the SEF group, the level of production of MMP-8 was higher than the negative control group in low concentration ($0.05{\mu}g/ml$) of SEF (p < 0.05). but it decreased with an increase in the concentration of SEF (p < 0.05). In the case of SEF treated with $Ca(OH)_2$, all of the MMP levels were higher than negative control group (p < 0.05), but no statistical difference was found among the different SEF concentrations (p > 0.05). All of the levels in E. coli LPS were incresed with increasing concentrations (p < 0.05). According to this study we could summarized as follows: 1. MMP-8 was expressed at low level in untreated PMN group the levels of MMP-8 were upregulated in PMN stimulated by E. coli LPS groups. 2. In the SEF groups, the level of production of MMP-8 decreased with an increase in concentration of SEF (p < 0.05). So E. faecalis may have suppressive effect on the production of MMP-8 by PMN. 3. In the case of SEF treated with $Ca(OH)_2$, all of the MMP levels at different SEF concentrations were higher than untreated PMN group (p < 0.05), but no statistical difference was found among the different SEF concentrations (p > 0.05).

  • The fixed point algebra $C^*(E)^{\gamma}$ of a gauge action $\gamma$ on a graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E)$ and its AF subalgebras $C^*(E)^{\gamma}_{\upsilon}$ associated to each vertex v do play an important role for the study of dynamical properties of $C^*(E)$. In this paper, we consider the stability of $C^*(E)^{\gamma}$ (an AF algebra is either stable or equipped with a (nonzero bounded) trace). It is known that $C^*(E)^{\gamma}$ is stably isomorphic to a graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E_{\mathbb{Z}}\;{\times}\;E)$ which we observe being stable. We first give an explicit isomorphism from $C^*(E)^{\gamma}$ to a full hereditary $C^*$-subalgebra of $C^*(E_{\mathbb{N}}\;{\times}\;E)({\subset}\;C^*(E_{\mathbb{Z}}\;{\times}\;E))$ and then show that $C^*(E_{\mathbb{N}}\;{\times}\;E)$ is stable whenever $C^*(E)^{\gamma}$ is so. Thus $C^*(E)^{\gamma}$ cannot be stable if $C^*(E_{\mathbb{N}}\;{\times}\;E)$ admits a trace. It is shown that this is the case if the vertex matrix of E has an eigenvector with an eigenvalue $\lambda$ > 1. The AF algebras $C^*(E)^{\gamma}_{\upsilon}$ are shown to be nonstable whenever E is irreducible. Several examples are discussed.

  • The matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family is involved in the breakdown of the extracellular matrix during normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes such as pathological aging, arthritis, and metastasis. Oxidative conditions generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) (e.g., hydrogen peroxide [$H_2O_2$]) in cells, which subsequently induce the synthesis of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1). MMP-1, an interstitial collagenase, in turn stimulates an aging phenomenon. In this study, baicalein (5,6,7-trihydroxyfl avone) was investigated for its in vitro activity against $H_2O_2$-induced damage using a human skin keratinocyte model. Baicalein pretreatment signifi cantly inhibited $H_2O_2$-induced up-regulation of MMP-1 mRNA, MMP-1 protein expression and MMP-1 activity in cultured HaCaT keratinocytes. In addition, baicalein decreased the transcriptional activity of activator protein-1 (AP-1) and the expression of c-Fos and c-Jun, both components of the heterodimeric AP-1 transcription factor. Furthermore, baicalein reduced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and c-Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK), which are upstream of the AP-1 transcription factor. The results of this study suggest that baicalein is involved in the inhibition of oxidative stress-induced expression of MMP-1 via inactivation of the ERK/JNK/AP-1 signaling pathway.

  • To better define the relationship between dermal regeneration and wound contraction and scar formation, the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) loaded in collagen sponge matrix on the fibroblast cell proliferation rate and the dermal mechanical strength were investigated. Collagen sponges with acid-soluble fraction of pig skin were prepared and incorporated with EGF at 0, 4, and 8 $\mu$g/1.7 $cm^{2}$. Dermal fibroblasts were cultured to 80$\%$ confluence using DMEM, treated with the samples submerged, and the cell viability was estimated using MTT assay. A deep, $2^{nd}$ degree- burn of diameter 1 cm was prepared on the rabbit ear and the tested dressings were applied twice during the 15-day, post burn period. The processes of re-epithelialization and dermal regeneration were investigated until the complete wound closure day and histological analysis was performed with H-E staining. EGF increased the fibroblast cell proliferation rate. The histology showed well developed, weave-like collagen bundles and fibroblasts in EGF-treated wounds while open wounds showed irregular collagen bundles and impaired fibroblast growth. The breaking strength (944.1 $\pm$ 35.6 vs. 411.5 $\pm$ 57.0 Fmax, $gmm^{-2}$) and skin resilience (11.3 $\pm$ 1.4 vs. 6.5 $\pm$ 0.6 mJ/$mm^{2}$) were significantly increased with EGFtreated wounds as compared with open wounds, suggesting that EGF enhanced the dermal matrix formation and improved the wound mechanical strength. In conclusion, EGF-improved dermal matrix formation is related with a lower wound contraction rate. The impaired dermal regeneration observed in the open wounds could contribute to the formation of wound contraction and scar tissue development. An extraneous supply of EGF in the collagen dressing on deep, $2^{nd}$ degree-burns enhanced the dermal matrix formation.

  • Research interest in the Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) concept for enhancing users' mobility experience is increasing. In particular, dynamic pricing techniques based on reinforcement learning have emerged since adjusting prices based on the demand is expected to help mobility services, such as taxi and car-sharing services, to gain more profit. This paper provides a simulation framework that considers more practical factors, such as demand density per location, preferred prices, the distance between users and drivers, and distance to the destination that critically affect the probability of matching between the users and the mobility service providers (e.g., drivers). The aforementioned new practical features are reflected on a data structure referred to as the Matching Matrix. Using an efficient algorithm of computing the probability of matching between the users and drivers and given a set of precisely identified high-demand locations using HDBSCAN, this study developed a better reward function that can gear the reinforcement learning process towards finding more realistic dynamic pricing policies.

  • Sustained release-microspheres and immediate release-pellets were prepared to develop a controlled release multiparticulate system containing both water soluble and insoluble dr ug. Pseudoephedrin.HCl (EPD) and terfenadine (TRF) were used as model drugs, respectively. Sustained release-EPD microspheres were prepared by solvent evaporation method using Eudragit RL or RS as a matrix combined with pH-insensitive film coating. Smaller EPD microspheres were obtained when smaller amount of Eudragit as a matrix material or larger amount of magnesium stearate as a dispersing agent was used. However the obtained microspheres did not show syfficient sustained release characteristics. About 97% of EPD was released after 1 hr irrespective of matrix material used. Subsequent coating of the microspheres with pH-insensitive polymer such as Eudragit RS or ethylcelulose (EC) resulted good sustained in 37.5, 73.3 and 92.0% release of encapsulated EPD in distilled water after 1, 3 abd 7 hr, respectively. It corresponds to mean dissolution time (MDT) of 2.3 hr, which is much larger than that of un-coated EPD microspheres (0.0048 hr). Immediate release TRF pellets were prepared by spherically agglomerated crystallization using Eudragit E as an inert matrix and methylene chloride as a liquid binder. Using Eudragit E alone as a matrix resulted in satisfactory physical properties of the pellets such as sphericity, surface texture and flowability, but led to slower release of TRF from pellets than un-modified TRF powder (MDT of 1.70 vs 1.43 hr in pH 1.2 dissolution medium). Introducing propylene glycol or sodium lauryl sulfate as an emulsifier brought about faster release of TRF from pellets (MDT of 1.14 and 0.95 hr, respectively). In conclusion, microencapsulation by solvent evaporation combined with film coating and spherically agglomerated crystallization were successfully utilized to prepare controlled release multiparticulate system composed of sustained release EPD-microspheres and immediate release TRF pellets.

  • Whereas the finite element method is well established today, the boundary element method is a fairly recent development. Both are general-purpose methods for the solution of various structural analysis problem. The B.E.M has several potential advantages relative to the F.E.M. One of them is that the number of unknowns in algebraic system obtained by discretization is proportional to the number of boundary nodes. Anothor advantage is the ease of discretization and input data preparation. However, the B.E.M. always leads to a fully populated and unsymmetric system of equations. Even though the number of degree-of-freedom is reduced as compared with F.E.M, since nodes exist on the boundary only in the B.E.M, to follow that the effort to solve the equations can be greater. It has been shown also that the time spent in setting up the coefficient matrix is a significant and can, in some cases, be greater than the time required to solve the equation. Thus, one can naturally consider the idea that two methods should be coupled, then the advantages of both methods can be taken. And further, by using this coupling method the HATCH CORNER was analyzed to give initial design data.

  • Let x : $M^{n}$ .rarw. $E^{m}$ be an isometric immersion of a manifold $M^{n}$ into the Euclidean space $E^{m}$ and .DELTA. the Laplacian of $M^{n}$ defined by -div.omicron.grad. The family of such immersions satisfying the condition .DELTA.x = .lambda.x, .lambda..mem.R, is characterized by a well known result ot Takahashi (8]): they are either minimal in $E^{m}$ or minimal in some Euclidean hypersphere. As a generalization of Takahashi's result, many authors ([3,6,7]) studied the hypersurfaces $M^{n}$ in $E^{n+1}$ satisfying .DELTA.x = Ax + b, where A is a square matrix and b is a vector in $E^{n+1}$, and they proved independently that such hypersurfaces are either minimal in $E^{n+1}$ or hyperspheres or spherical cylinders. Since .DELTA.x = -nH, the submanifolds mentioned above satisfy .DELTA.H = .lambda.H or .DELTA.H = AH, where H is the mean curvature vector field of M. And the family of hypersurfaces satisfying .DELTA.H = .lambda.H was explored for some cases in [4]. In this paper, we classify space curves x : R .rarw. $E^{3}$ satisfying .DELTA.x = Ax + b or .DELTA.H = AH, and find conditions for such curves to be equivalent.alent.alent.

  • Using a ray tracing simulation, we have investigated the moir${\acute{e}}$ and starburst phenomena of touch screen panels (TSPs) based on opaque metallic grids (square, hexagonal, and random grids). It is demonstrated that employing a random metal mesh is the most effective way to suppress the moir${\acute{e}}$ and starburst phenomena at the same time. At high crossing angles between metal mesh of TSPs and black matrix (BM) of displays, however, a random metal mesh brings in stronger moir${\acute{e}}$ phenomenon than a square metal mesh due to point defects. Though the square metal mesh suppresses the moir${\acute{e}}$ effect substantially at high crossing angles, yet it results in the strongest starburst patterns. We have also provided the simulation scheme that can capture the moir${\acute{e}}$ and starburst patterns observed experimentally and useful design guidelines for metal grids.
