  • The researches of a two-phase atomizers have been carried out in the field of automotive and aerospace industries in order to improve the atomization performance of the liquid droplets ejecting from these nozzles. The smaller droplets have the advantages of the reduction of environmental pollution matter and effective use of energy through the improvement of heat and mass transfer efficiency. Thus, to propose the basic information of two-phase flow, an internal mixing atomizer was designed, its shape factor was 0.6 and the liquid feeding hole was positioned at the center of the mixing tube which was used to mix the air and liquid. The experimental work was performed in the field after the nozzle exit orifice. The measurement of the liquid droplets was made by PDPA system. This system can measure the velocity and size of the droplets simultaneously. The number of the droplets used in this calculation was set to 10,000. The flow patterns were regulated by ALR (Air to Liquid mass Ratio). ALR was varied from 0.1024 to 0.3238 depending on the mass flow rate of the air. The analysis of sampling data was mainly focused on the spray characteristics such as flow characteristics distributions, half-width of spray, RMS, and turbulent kinetic energy with ALR.

  • An O/W microemulsion system was developed to enhance the skin permeability of ace-clofenac. Of the oils studied, Labrafil? M 1944 CS was chosen as the oil phase: of the microemulson, as it showed a good solubilizing capacity. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were constructed to obtain the concentration range of oil, surfactant, Cremophor ELP, and co-surfactant, ethanol, for micoemulsion formation. Eight different formulations with various values of oil of $6-30\%$, water of $0-80\%$, and the mixture of surfactant and co-surfactant (at the ratio of 2) of $14-70\%$. The in vitro transdermal permeability of aceclofenac from the microemulsions was evaluated using Franz diffusion cells mounted with rat skin. The level of aceclofenac permeated was analyzed by HPLC and the droplet size' of the microemulsions was characterized using a Zetasizer Nano-ZS. Terpenes were added to the microemulsions at a level of $5\%$, and their effects on the skin permeation of aceclofenac were investigated. The mean diameters of the microemulsions ranged between approximately $10\~100nm$, and the skin permeability of the aceclofenac incorporated into the microemulsion systems was 5-fold higher than that of the ethanol vehicle. Of the various terpenes added, limonene had the best enhancing ability. These results indicate that the microemulsion pystem studied is a promising tool for the percutaneous delivery of aceclofenac.

  • In this study, the stability criteria of cosmeceuticals emulsion containing Flos Sophorae Immaturus extracts was established using the Box-Behnken design model (BBD-RSM). As optimization conditions of the emulsification using the BBD-RSM, the amount of surfactant and additive, and emulsification time and speed were used as quantitative factors while mean droplet size (MDS), viscosity and emulsion stability index (ESI) were used as reaction values. According to the result of BBD-RSM, optimum conditions for the emulsification were as follows; the emulsification time and speed of 17.8 min and 5505 rpm, respectively and amounts of the emulsifier and additive of 2.28 and 1.05 wt.%, respectively. Under these conditions, the MDS, viscosity, and ESI after 7 days from the reaction were estimated as 1875.5 nm, 1789.7 cP, and 93.8%, respectively. The average error value from our actual experiments for verifying the conclusions was below 5%, which is mainly due to the fact that the BBD-RSM was applied to the optimized cosmeceuticals emulsification.

  • Nano-emulsions are submicron sized emulsions that are under extensive investigation as drug carriers for improving the delivery of therapeutic agents. The aim of this research is to investigate the stability of nano-emulsions containing polymers. Nano-emulsions containing high concentrations of Carbopol 941, Aristoflex AVC, Aronbis M, Permulen TR 2 and Aculyn 44 were unstable compared with macroemulsions with polymers. The size of emulsion droplet manufactured by adding polymer before emulsification were larger than that of emulsion manufactured by adding polymer after the emulsification. The stability of nano-emulsion containing a low concentration of polymer was also decreased, however the effect was lower than that in the high concentration of polymer. Under similar viscosity of polymer, the sequence of unstability was Aristoflex AVC < Carbopol 941 < Permulen TR2 < Carbopol 941 + Aculyn 44 < Aronbis M.

  • This study describes extinguishment mechanism of the purely buoyant diffusion flame using the water spray. Experiments are systematically carried out for the oul pool fire with the six different atomizing nozzles. From the measurement of burning rate which represents the combustion intensity of fire, it is observed that the water spray is able to act to enhance fire rather than to extinguish fire. The air entertainment due to the water spray is visualized to understand this phenomenon, acting to enhance fire. In order to observe effects of droplet size on fire extinguishment, and amount of water which reaches the flame base, fuel surface, and mean diameter of droplets are measured. When water droplets are too small, they do not reach the flame base because they can the water spray having too small doplets is ineffective for extinguishment of the oil fire.

  • We investigated the charging characteristics of a conducting solid sphere (glassy carbon sphere) comparing with that of a water droplet and check the applicability of the perfect conductor theory. For the systematic research, sphere size, applied voltages, viscosity of the medium were changed and the results were compared with that of corresponding water droplets and the perfect conductor theory. Basically, a glassy carbon sphere follows the perfect conductor theory but the charging amount was lower as much as 70~80% of theoretical prediction value due to oil film formed between electrode and a carbon sphere. We hope this result provides basic understandings on the solid sphere contact charging phenomenon and related applications.

  • This study was undertaken to develop a stable self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) for trans-cinnamaldehyde, a known antibacterial and antifungal agent. A simultaneous analytical method was established for quantification of trans-cinnamaldehyde and its degradant, cinnamic acid. Various surfactants were applied to assess their effect on the aqueous solubility of trans-cinnamaldehyde, and pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were plotted. Of the various formulations tested, the liquid SMEDDS composed of trans-cinnamaldehyde (oil), Cremophor EL (surfactant) and Transcutol P (cosurfactant) at a volume ratio of 10/70/20, produced the smallest emulsion droplet size (around 23 nm). The stability test determined the superior stability of the trans-cinnamaldehyde SMEDDS with constant trans-cinnamaldehyde content and z-average diameter of emulsion, under accelerated and heat stressed condition. Thus, we believe that this novel trans-cinnamaldehyde SMEDDS formulation has the potential to be applied for the development of trans-cinnamaldehyde medicines in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Spray characteristics were investigated by impinging F-O-O-F type injector with varying the impingement angle through 15, 20 and 30 degree and the mixture ratio(O/F ratio) from 1.5 to 3.0. Experimental results show that the correlation between dispersion and impingement angle is not influenced of the mixture ratio variation, but which has influence on number density, and there is a linear correlation between dispersion and impingement angle. Velocity distribution, standard deviation and SMD of droplets are decreased as the impingement angle increases. Also, it was confirmed that the distribution of droplet size are in accordance with Rosin-Rammler and Upper-limit distribution.

  • The evaluation of supercooled water droplet impingement characteristics of full-scale aircraft components in wind tunnels under icing conditions has been severely limited by the relative size of the component and the test facility. The concept of truncated airfoil sections has been suggested in order to extend the operational range of icing tunnels. With proper deflection of the small trailing-edge flap on the truncated airfoil the local pressure distribution may remain very close to that of the full-scale airfoil. In this study the shape of a truncated flapped airfoil is investigated for various deflection angles. To validate the truncated flapped airfoils, air flow and collection efficiency over the truncated airfoil are compared with the results of the full-scale airfoil obtained from the state-of-the-art icing simulation code.

  • This study was performed to evaluate some geometrical characteristics of disc type swirl nozzles and to develop nozzles having improved spraying performance for knapsack sprayers. Considered geometrical characteristics of the nozzles were disc thickness, orifice diameter, swirl chamber diameter and shape of the swirl chamber (nozzle chamber). 3 types of nozzle cores were compared. Main results of this study were as follows. 1. Spraying angle (A) was increased with decreasing disc thickness (x), and with increasing orifice diameter (y) or spraying pressure (z). The equation was as a follow. $$A=3.95\frac{1}{x}+73.50\sqrt{y}+18.97\sqrt{z}-60.16$$ 2. Spraying flow rate (F) was increased with decreasing disc thickness (x), and with increasing orifice diameter (y) or spraying pressure (z). The equation was as a follow. $$F=-89.95x+611.09y+620.49\sqrt{z}-868.20$$ 3. Mean spraying droplet size (V) was decreased with decreasing disc thickness (x), with increasing orifice diameter (y) in low spraying pressure, with decreasing orifice diameter (y) in high spraying pressure, and with increasing spraying pressure (z). $$V=148.77x^4-746.85x^3+1311.76x^2-917.31x$$ 4. The spray pattern was compared using CV values. The CV value of the nozzle core type 1 was 26.7% in spraying pressure $3\;kgf/cm^2$, the CV value of the core type 2 was 23.6% in spraying pressure $2\;kgf/cm^2$, the CV value of the core type 3 was 20.6% in spraying pressure $1\;kgf/cm^2$. 5. Minimum spraying pressure was improved from $1.5\;kgf/cm^2\;to\;1.0\;kgf/cm^2$ by changes of nozzle core shape.
