Study of the 1,200 V-Class Floating Island IGBT (1,200 V급 Floating Island IGBT의 관한 연구)

  • This paper was researched about 1,200 V level floating island IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor). Presently, 1,200 V level IGBT is used in Inverter for distributed power generation. We analyzed and compared electrical charateristics of the proposed floating island IGBT and conventional IGBT. For analyzing and comparison, we used T-CAD tool and simulated the electrical charateristics of the devices. And we extracted optimal design and process parameter of the devices. As a result of experiments, we obtained 1,456 V and 1,459 V of breakdown voltages, respectively. And we obatined 4.06 V and 4.09 V of threshold voltages, respectively. On the other hand, on-state voltage drop of floating island IGBT was 3.75 V. but on-state vlotage drop of the conventional IGBT was 4.65 V. Therefore, we almost knew that the proposed floating island IGBT was superior than the conventional IGBT in terms of power dissipation.

  • Triangle-shaped island was been used for the exclusive separation between the right-turn and the through flow. However, in case that existing Triangle-Shaped Island is built at the intersection of narrow road. there are more possibilities of traffic collision trespassing into the opposite lane. Accordingly, separation of the opposite lane is required so as to prevent the intrusion of the large-sized (a heavy) vehicle into the opposite lane turning at the intersection. This study showed the comparison between intersection composed of existing Triangle-Shaped Island and the intersection with Drop Island is added. First of all, in the safety aspect, a method to decide location and shape of Drop Island considering turning trajectory of the large-sized (the heavy vehicle) is addressed. The guideline on the placement of drop island install location and method to decide form the consider heavy truck's turn trajectory in safety side. As a conclusion. we analyzed that drop island is relatively superior to existing Triangle-Shaped Island in terms of driver, ease of driving, driving pleasantness, pedestrian, widening and economic performance aspect.

  • The study on the left turning trajectory has not done many times in Korea. Because of this, there are a lot of intersections built without considering on turning trajectory of vehicles, in Korea, and we can see many conflicts, reduced capacity of turn, especially at small intersections. Even if left turn trajectory is designed well, it is not easy to mark exactly on the pavement according to the turn trajectory. This study suggests "drop Islands" which can be seen in Europe, and is introduced in Korea recently, to solve the problems of conflicts and reduced capacity of turning. It suggests a table of location of the stop line so that the engineers who design the intersection design appropriate left turn trajectory and marking of the stop line and turn trajectory is done more exactly. To evaluate the effect of "drop island", two intersections with and without drop island were compared on the turnning radii and location of stop line. Construction of "drop island" can increase the capacity of intersection and safety without additional land and construction expenses.

  • Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors(IGBTs) have received wide attention because of their high current conduction and good switching characteristics. To reduce the power loss of IGBT, the onstate voltage drop should be lowered and the switching time should be shortened. However, there is trade-off between the breakdown voltage and the on-state voltage drop. The FLoatingIsland(FLI) structure can lower the on-state voltage drop without reducing breakdown voltage. In this paper, The FLI IGBT shows an on-state voltage drop that is 22.5% lower than the conventional IGBT, even though the breakdown voltages of each IGBT are almost identical.

  • This paper presents a renewable energy configuration plan of Micro grid in Gapa Island. To analyze the characteristics of Micro grid, BESS (Battery Energy Storage System), PMSG (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) and SCIG (Squirrel Cage Induction Generator) are first modelled. The PMSG and SCIG will operate with basis on the real power curve. when the total power demand is larger than the total power generation, the BESS will be operated and the SOC (State Of Charge) is reduced. If the value of SOC could drop down to limited value, the system may be broken because of the voltage drop of BESS. To solve this problem, a DG (Diesel Generator) is used to charge the BESS and keep the voltage value of BESS with in a allowance limit. This paper represents simulation result when PMSG, SCIG connected to the Micro grid installed in Gapa Island. The simulation is carry out by using PSCAD/EMTDC program with actual line constant and transformer parameter in Gapa Island.

  • Power MOSFETs (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor) operate as energy control semiconductor switches. In order to reduce energy loss of the device, it is essential to increase its conductance. However, a trade-off relationship between the breakdown voltage and conductance of the device have been the critical difficulty to improve. In this paper, theoretical analysis of electrical benefits on single floating island power MOSFET is proposed. By the method, the optimization point has set defining the doping limit under single floating island structure. The numerical multiple 2.22 was obtained which indicates the doping limit of the original device, improving its ON state voltage drop by 45%.

  • IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) has been widely used around the power industry as it has good switching performance and its excellent conductance. In order to reduce power loss during switch turn-on state, it is essential to reduce its resistance. However, trade off relationship between breakdown voltage and device conductance is the greatest obstacle on the way of improvement. Floating island structure is one of the solutions. Still, under optimized device condition for the best performance, improvement rate is negligible. Therefore, this paper suggests adding trench gate on floating island structure to eliminate JFET (junction field effect transistor) area to reduce resistance and activate floating island effect. Experimental result by 2D simulation using TCAD, shows 20% improvement of turn-on state voltage drop.

Thermal and Flow Modeling and Fin Structure Optimization of an Electrical Device with a Staggered Fin (엇갈림 휜을 갖는 전자기기의 열유동 모델링 및 휜 형상 최적 설계)

  • Thermal and flow modeling and fin structure optimization were performed to reduce the weight of an electrical device with a staggered fin. First, a numerical model for thermal and flow characteristics was suggested, and then, the model was verified experimentally. Using the verified model, improvement in cooling performance of the cooling system through the staggered fins was predicted. As a result, 87.5% of total heat generated was dissipated through the cooling fins, and a thermal island was observed in the rotor because of low velocity of the internal air flow through the air gap. In addition, it was confirmed that the staggered fin improves the cooling performance but it also increases the total pressure drop within the cooling system, by maximizing the leading edge effect. Based on this analysis result, the effect of each design parameter on the thermal and flow characteristics was analyzed to select the main optimal design parameters, and multi-objective optimization was performed by considering the cooling performance and the fin weight. In conclusion, the optimized fin structure improved the cooling performance by 7% and reduced the fin weight by 28% without any compromise of the pressure drop.

  • This paper is about optimal flywheel capacity estimation for Ullueng-do power system. The power system of Ullueng-do has some differences with other island power system in Korea. It includes wind generator, hydro-generators as well as diesel generators. There are some problems on 600kW wind generator. Because of frequent drop of wind generator, the Ulleung-do power system have been threatened on frequency. The power frequency is 60Hz, and it should be between 59.9 and 60.1Hz. However, since the electrical inertia is small and the weight of wind generation is relatively high, generator drop of wind generation might make the power frequency out of boundary. In this paper, the flywheel energy storage system is assumed to be installed on Ulleung-do power system. Then, the maximum wind generation capacity and the optimal superconducting flywheel energy storage system capacity is estimated by the transient stability simulations.

A Study on Predicting the Range of Cooling Effect and the Diffusion of Water Particles that are Generated from a Fountain (분수에서 생성되는 물입자의 확산과 냉각효과의 범위 예측)

  • This research was done to clarify the cooling effect of water particles generated from a fountain. This effect is a one way to control the heat island effect of big cities. The result of this research was drawn by setting the jets of water in a certain height, and then studying the diffusion of water particles, which is affected by the size of the particles and the wind speed, and the cooling effect caused by the diffusion. 1) When a diameter of a water drop was 500 ${\mu}m$ and the wind speed was 2.0 to 6.0 m/sec, the water drop diffused 75 to 190m, and the water vapor spread over 175 to 440 m. As a result, there was more than $0.5^{\circ}C$ of cooling effect on the temperature in the atmosphere 130 to 330m around the water fountain. 2) When a diameter of a water drop was 750 ${\mu}m$ and the wind speed was 2.0 to 6.0 m/sec, the water drop diffused 65 to 150 m, and the water vapor spread over 160 to 405 m. Moreover, there was more than $0.5^{\circ}C$ of cooling effect on the temperature in the atmosphere 110 to 275 m around the water fountain. 3) After studying on the relationship between the diameter of water drop and the wind speed, and the diffusion of water particles and the range of the atmosphere that was cooled, a result could be drawn from the research that the smaller the diameter of the water vapor gets and the faster the wind speed becomes, the wider the water particles diffuse and the cooler the atmosphere around the fountain becomes. 4) This research further extrapolates that when the ordinary water(tap water, water from river and stream) is used in a fountain, the cooling effect of the air near the fountain can be approached similarly. If the seawater is used in a fountain, there is to be more to concern not only on cooling effect on the air, but also on other effects on surrounding environment generated by the salt in seawater.
