  • The latest development of the Korean drama production industry has been accompanied by the steep rise in the number of players and the contraction of the advertizing market, which have combined to intensify the competition severely. Then, China happened. Entertainment agencies' logical strategic choice to maximize production revenue potential was to secure A-list actors who can sell, pushing up their prices, that process has continued to even compromise the health of the production industry as well as the agencies' financial integrity. The drama production industry, including entertainment agencies, should shift the strategic focus from simple production revenue generation to profit maximization through diversifying revenue sources like securing IP rights.

  • In order to respond to the ever-changing media environments in the era of smart and mobile technology, KBS has introduced and partially applied PIE-TV and PIE-nonTV modes that monitor the average number of viewers among the national population group by means of the sample household extraction method which is a traditional way of rating investigation. This study analyzes the correlation between the number of viewers of premiere, re-air broadcasting, and MPP channel programs and the number of OTT-based VOD viewers in reference to the data extracted from PIE-TV survey results. KBS conducted a survey for 3 months between June and August 2017 to measure the PIE-TV Index, based on which the above-mentioned correlation was analyzed with programs classified to entertainment, drama, and cultural programs. For data analysis, SPSS (Ver. 18.0 for Window, SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA) was utilized. It was assumed that when p<0.05 in the confidence interval of 95%, statistically significance would be secured. Among the 30 subjects in the simple correlation analysis, the parameter was determined by the Person correlation coefficient and the non-parameter by the Spearman correlation coefficient. Analysis results are as below: (1) As the number of viewers of premier entertainment, drama, and cultural programs was larger, the number of VOD viewers was larger accordingly. (2) As for entertainment and drama programs, as the number of re-air broadcasting viewers was larger, the number of VOD viewers decreased accordingly. (2) As for entertainment and drama programs, as the number of MPP viewers was larger, the number of VOD viewers decreased accordingly. It is expected that this statistical data can be utilized for strategic planning of MPP channel lineups including terrestrial TV broadcasting, cable TV, etc.

  • While the way broadcasting contents are made has changed drastically, some conflicts appear to remain unchanged. And they are about allegedly unfair practices. The whole arguments may even be deemed natural to a certain degree, considering the characteristics of the overall creative industry. But it needs to be highlighted the conflicts are being aggravated both in drama and non-drama production industries for different reasons. The drama side of the issue comes from how the project-based organizations are organized, and will be resolved if broadcasting companies do not send over their directors. On the other hand, the non-drama side's issues are about the complaints that outsourcing production companies have about the production cost. In general, due largely to the genre's relatively weak power to generate revenue, the producers do not get the upper hand when it comes to the negotiations over financial matters.

  • In terms of creating widespread popularity and a high value added business, TV drama is recognized as an unrivaled entertainment content above any other TV program genres Although recently some broadcasting companies have been trying to set up a drama production system, it seems that a well-structured system has not been established, yet. This study analyses the practices and mechanisms of drama producing processes based on the in-depth interviews with the experts in the drama production fields in three major broadcasting companies. It is found that the Korean drama production system is 'a producer-director system' and that the strategies for the windowing effects are not systematically applied from the pre-production stage. For the broadcasting companies to strengthen the competitiveness through drama, the expert-producer system should be introduced, the production elements should be systematically managed, and the multi-use strategies should be effectively established.

By analyzing all seasonal episodes of "72 seconds" and applying the various storytelling methodologies and related theories, this paper derived the main storytelling characteristics of "72 seconds" as follows. First, through the composition of the microscopic non-plot, the story value of empathy and fun is maximized, even though there is no dramatic composition compared to the general movie or drama. Second, by the specialization of everyday life, it leads to the transition from everyday experience to the new context. In other words, it provides a consensus through the cognitive expansion and interest by unfamiliarity of the ordinary experience to the audience. Third, based on the characteristics of super-compression and short theme, it utilizes fully stylistic narration like rapping. And finally, based on various hybridity and variation, it uses remediation actively in all respects, especially comedy genre and comic factor.

The two dramas are Korean family drama 'the Golden Days of Daughter-in-law ' and Chinese family drama 'the Beautiful Days of Daughter-in-law'. There are many ways to see dramas but dramas are the basement which express the society and the culture in that country, and here the women's portrayal is the main theme. The article follows steps: first, through the dramatic episode of two dramas, show the characters of main images. And through the main characters analyze the reared culture and show the same points and differences between the two chosen episodes. As a result of the women's portrayal analysis through the sex-role model, there were some differences between two dramas : new generation of Korean daughter-in-law tend to be very independent and they make effort to develop themselves even though they got married ; for Chinese daughter-in-law, very dependent, family is prior to everything without opportunity of self-development.
