  • The increasement in the floor hight may be one of the most significant problem in the use of precast concrete double slab in the multi-story buildings. The modified double-tees including duct space at the ends of slab were considered in this study. The length and thickness of nib of modified double tee was increased to receive the uniform reaction from rectangular beam, while the original PCI dapped one to receive the point load from inverted tee beam to the leg of double tee. Shear tests were performed on the ends of the modified double tees which were designed by strut-tie model. The modified double tees generally show more ductile flexural failure in the long thickened nib. It is concluded that they show superior failure patterns than that of original dapped one with shear failure.

  • A simplified model which incorporates the moment-axial tension interaction of the double-span beams in a column-removed steel frame is presented in this paper. To this end, material and geometric nonlinear parametric finite element analyses were conducted for the double-span beams by changing the beam span to depth ratio and the beam size within some practical ranges. The beam span to depth ratio was shown to be the most influential factor governing the catenary action of the double-span beams. Based on the parametric analysis results, a simplified piecewise linear model which can reasonably describe the vertical, resisting force versus the beam chord rotation relationship was proposed. It was also shown that the proposed method can readily be used for the energy-based progressive collapse analysis of steel moment frames.

  • In this paper aeroelastic behavior of 3-phase nano-composite beam-plate with double delaminations is investigated. It is tried to study the effect of carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) on critical flutter pressure of reinforced damaged nano-composite structures. In this case, the CNTs are appending to the polymer matrix uniformly. The Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka model is used to obtain the effective material properties of 3-phase nano-composite beam-plate. To investigate the aeroelastic behavior of delaminated beam-plate subjected to supersonic flow, it is assumed that the damaged segments are forced to vibrate together. The boundary conditions and auxiliary conditions at edges of delaminated segments are used to predict critical flutter pressure. The influence of CNTs and different delamination parameters such as delamination length, axial position and its position through thickness are investigated on critical flutter pressure.

  • In this paper, free vibration characteristics of a rotating double tapered functionally graded beam is investigated. Material properties of the beam vary continuously through thickness direction according to the power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The governing differential equations of motion are derived using the Hamilton's principle and solved utilizing an efficient and semi-analytical technique called the Differential Transform Method (DTM). Several important aspects such as taper ratios, rotational speed, hub radius, as well as the material volume fraction index which have impacts on natural frequencies of such beams are investigated and discussed in detail. Numerical results are tabulated in several tables and figures. In order to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the current analysis, some of present results are compared with previous results in the literature and an excellent agreement is observed. It is showed that the natural frequencies of an FG rotating double tapered beam can be obtained with high accuracy by using DTM. It is also observed that nondimensional rotational speed, height taper ratio, power-law exponent significantly affect the natural frequencies of the FG double tapered beam while the effects of hub radius and breadth taper ratio are negligible.

  • An outline of the Timoshenko beam theory is presented. Two differential equations of motion in terms of deflection and rotation are comprised into single equation with deflection and analytical solutions of natural vibrations for different boundary conditions are given. Double frequency phenomenon for simply supported beam is investigated. The Timoshenko beam theory is modified by decomposition of total deflection into pure bending deflection and shear deflection, and total rotation into bending rotation and axial shear angle. The governing equations are condensed into two independent equations of motion, one for flexural and another for axial shear vibrations. Flexural vibrations of a simply supported, clamped and free beam are analysed by both theories and the same natural frequencies are obtained. That fact is proved in an analytical way. Axial shear vibrations are analogous to stretching vibrations on an axial elastic support, resulting in an additional response spectrum, as a novelty. Relationship between parameters in beam response functions of all type of vibrations is analysed.

  • Current codes recommend large amounts of shear reinforcement for reinforced concrete beam-column joints that causes significant bar congestion. Increase in congestion of shear reinforcement in joint core (connection zone), leads to increase accomplishment problems. The congestion may also lead to diameter limitations on the beam bars relative to the joint dimensions. Using double headed studs instead of conventional closed hoops in reinforced concrete beam-column joints reduces congestion and ensures easier assembly of the reinforcing cage. The purpose of this research is evaluating the efficiency of the proposed reinforcement. In this way, 10 groups of exterior beam-column joints are modeled. Each group includes 7 specimens by different reinforcing details in their joint core. All specimens are modeled by using of ABAQUS and analyzed subjected to cyclic loading. After verification of analytical modeling with an experimental specimen, 3D nonlinear specimens are modeled and analyzed. Then, the effect of amount and arrangement of headed studs on ductility, performance, ultimate strength and energy absorption has been studied. Based on the results, all joints reinforced with double headed studs represent better performance compared with the joints without shear transverse reinforcement in joints core. The behavior of the former is close to joints reinforced with closed hoops and cross ties according to the seismic design codes. By adjusting the arrangement of double-headed studs, the decrease in ductility, performance, ultimate moment resistant and energy absorption reduce to 2.61%, 0.90%, 0.90% and 1.66% respectively compared with the joints reinforced by closed hoops on the average. Since the use of headed studs reduces accomplishment problems, these amounts are negligible. Therefore, use of double-headed studs has proved to be a viable option for reinforcing exterior beam-column joints.

  • $TiB_2$-TiN double-layer coating have been prepared by ion beam enhanced deposition. AES, XRD, TEM and HRTEM were employed to characterize the $TiB_2$ layer. The microhardness of the coatings was evaluated by an ultra low-load microhardness indenter system, and the tribological behavior was examined by a ball-on-disc tribology wear tester. It was found that in a single titanium diboride layer, the composition is uniform along the depth of the film, and it is mainly composed of nanocrystalline $TiB_2$ with hexagonal structure, which resulted from the ion bombardment during the film growth. The hardness of the $TiB_2$ films increases with increasing ion energy, and approaches a maximum value of the $TiB_2$ films increases with increasing ion energy, and approaches a maximum value of 39 Gpa at ion energy of 85 keV. The tribological property of the TiB2 films is also improved by higher energy of 85keV. The tribological property of the $TiB_2$ films is also improved by higher energy ion beam bombardment. There is no major disparity in the mechanical properties of double-layer $TiB_2$/TiN coatings and TiN/$TiB_2$ coatings. Both show an improved wear resistance compared with single-layer $TiB_2$ films. The adhesion of double-layer coatings is also superior to that of single-layer films.

  • We report our development of the fabrication process of sub-micron scale $Al-AlO_x-Al$ tunnel junction by using electron-beam lithography and double-angle shadow evaporation technique. We used double-layer resist to construct a suspended bridge structure, and double-angle electron-beam evaporation to form a sub-micron scale overlapped junction. We adopted an e-beam insensitive resist as a bottom sacrificing layer. Tunnel barrier was formed by oxidation of the bottom aluminum layer between the bottom and top electrode deposition, which was done in a separate load-lock chamber. The junction resistance is designed and controlled to be 50 $\Omega$ to match the impedance of the transmission line. The junctions will be used in the broadband shot noise thermometry experiment, which will serve as a link between the electrical unit and the thermodynamic unit.

  • This paper presents the experimental result of Reinforced Concrete column-steel beam joint connected by Band Plates(BP). Main parameters in the test are the shape of BP and thickness of plate. Ten interior and exterior RC column-steel beam joint specimens are designed. Cyclic loads are applied to the beam end of eight specimens (four interior specimens and four exterior specimens). To evaluate the cyclic effect, monotonic loads are acted for two specimens. All specimen showed similar failure pattern such as the plate of BP get torn after the large deformation. Even though the specimen with double cross type BP has lower strength than the specimen with single cross type BP, the energy dissipation capacity of the specimen turned out high. Thus, provided the strength of joint with double cross type to be designed to have suitable strength by increasing the thickness of plate, the joint system may show higher seismic capacity.
